Qi Taiguo returned home injured and deeply troubled from his mission, seeking silent comfort from his wife, Cheng Su. He confided in her, revealing that Gao Linbing, who had recently left with his son, was an enemy spy.

What?

The shocking revelation: Gao Linbing, a spy for the enemy nation?

Cheng Su shot up from her seat, disbelief etched on her face. How could such a thing be possible? How could this be happening?

Both Gao Linbing and his wife, Sister-in-law Gao, had always been close to her family, treating her with kindness. Sister-in-law Gao, in particular, had offered her immense support. Yet, Qi Taiguo was now declaring him an enemy spy?

Cheng Su swallowed, a realization dawning. Was this profound upset the reason for his distress? Was it a feeling of deep deception and betrayal?

"What exactly is going on here? Could you please explain?" Cheng Su settled back into her chair, her voice laced with curiosity.

Had it been anyone else, she might not have pressed for details. But given the long-standing positive relationship with both individuals, how could they possibly be spies?

"He is Japanese. Many years ago, he assumed the identity of the real Gao Linbing and infiltrated our ranks, lying dormant until this very moment. His objective was to collaborate with an intelligence officer who possessed the list of enemy spies embedded within our country." Qi Taiguo stated impassively.

Cheng Su, with her sharp intellect, grasped the implication immediately upon hearing Qi Taiguo's words.

If the intelligence officer on their side, who held the list of deep-cover agents within their nation, were compromised, all the enemy's years of cultivating these spies would be rendered futile. Consequently, Gao Linbing's carefully constructed facade would crumble, inevitably leading to his exposure.

Therefore, that intelligence officer was of paramount importance. And was Gao Linbing part of the operation to deal with this critical individual?

"Did he receive the notification?" Cheng Su inquired.

Qi Taiguo gave a slow nod. "Most likely!"

"Then where is he now?" Cheng Su's voice was tight with concern.

"He is deceased!" Qi Taiguo replied, his tone seemingly detached, yet Cheng Su detected an undercurrent of sorrow and weariness in his voice.

Suddenly, she understood the depth of his grief. A comrade with whom he had shared trials by fire had turned out to be a foreign operative. This was not merely a personal betrayal, but a profound blow on both national and individual levels, almost indistinguishable in its impact.

And the former comrade, once so close to her, now had his entire existence revealed as a carefully crafted deception.

How could one possibly come to terms with such a revelation?

Abruptly, Cheng Su pushed back her blanket. "Mom mentioned you were injured? Let me examine your wound. Did *he* cause it?"

"It's nothing serious, just a gunshot wound to the leg. He deliberately aimed off-target," Qi Taiguo said, gently holding her hand.

Cheng Su froze once more, stunned by the revelation.

"He had been undercover for so long, living under the guise of the true Gao Linbing, experiencing his life. He genuinely invested his emotions into those past days, which is why everyone believed him," Qi Taiguo emitted a hollow, sarcastic laugh. "But in the end, his mission was still paramount. Why go through all this elaborate deception? If he was truly loyal to his country, why show me leniency? Gao Linbing, what a damned bastard he is!"

Tears again streamed uncontrollably down Qi Taiguo's face.

Who says men are stoic? It simply means they haven't yet reached the breaking point of heartbreak.

Qi Taiguo's profound heartbreak stemmed from his genuine affection for Gao Linbing, viewing him as a brother. Gao Linbing's actions, however, made this profound sorrow all the more complex.

Had his heart been hardened enough to end the situation with a single bullet, or to cripple him, perhaps the sorrow would not have been so overwhelming.

Yet, Gao Linbing had displayed unexpected leniency, even choosing self-inflicted death by a bullet in the end.

It was precisely these conflicting layers of emotion that gave rise to such profound grief.

Listening to the account, Cheng Su felt a sharp pang of pain in her chest. How could things have unfolded this way? It was all too sudden and unexpected!

"A comrade, a brother with whom you've faced life and death, and then one day, you discover you can't trust them, not even a hint of suspicion crossed your mind. Susu, tell me, who else can I possibly trust?" Qi Taiguo gazed at her, his eyes reflecting a deep-seated doubt about the world.
