Back To The 80s: President's Doted Wife Chapter 1586 - 1587: The Death of Secretary Gao
Previously on Back To The 80s: President's Doted Wife...
With Qi Taiguo away on a mission, Qi Xiaoqi recovered from his ailment, allowing Cheng Su to resume her daily life. She attended school, occasionally checked in on the family business, and dedicated more time to her son.
Previously, Qi Taiguo's prolonged absences left her feeling profoundly lonely. However, with Qi Xiaoqi's constant chatter filling the days, Cheng Su found her solitude significantly lessened. Engaging with her child daily, observing his slightest smiles and frowns, had become the most tranquil and unburdened period since her transmigration. It became clear why children often infuse a household with such vibrancy, while simultaneously deepening the connection between a couple.
Life continued in its predictable domestic rhythm. One weekend, after tucking Qi Xiaoqi into bed, Cheng Su retrieved the newspaper from Mother Cheng and settled in to catch up on the news.
She found reading newspapers invaluable for staying abreast of current affairs. Her preference leaned towards publications from major news agencies, focusing on national matters. Her mother would often remark that Cheng Su wasn't involved in anything of consequence, questioning the purpose of reading such news when it likely wouldn't be fully grasped.
Cheng Su would typically dismiss these comments with a lighthearted smile. Yet, upon opening the newspaper this time, a jarring headline commanded her attention, causing her to sit bolt upright, her lips parting in surprise.
Gao Hongbo had passed away!
It was a brief obituary notice, stating Gao Hongbo succumbed to illness and providing details of his memorial service.
How could this be? Gao Hongbo was Jiang Qing’s primary patron; how did he perish so abruptly? And from an illness, of all things?
Cheng Su was stunned. Rereading the notice confirmed it was indeed the secretary from that particular organization, not another individual sharing the same name. Consequently, was Jiang Qing's clandestine lover truly deceased?
This turn of events was utterly unforeseeable!
She grasped the porcelain teacup on the coffee table, downing the cool liquid, and sat in a state of profound bewilderment.
Gao Hongbo is dead, but what about Jiang Qing? Where is she now?
"What's with your expression? You're as pale as a ghost," Mother Cheng inquired upon entering with a bowl of fried meatballs, noticing Cheng Su's deeply troubled look.
"It's nothing!"
"Oh. Sister-in-law Song sent these meatballs over. Would you like some? I think she’s making a real effort to mend fences. Look how generous she is; she wasn’t like this before..." Mother Cheng continued her rambling.
However, Cheng Su registered not a single word, her mind consumed by thoughts of Jiang Qing.
Gao Hongbo's demise was indeed sudden. The official cause was stated as illness, and he did suffer from diabetes, making the explanation plausible. The general sentiment was one of sorrow for his untimely passing, particularly as he was approaching retirement the following year.
While the claim of death by illness might fool the general public, it would never convince Ning Ge, especially considering Gao Hongbo had concealed his beloved Jiang Qing, that obsessive woman. With Gao Hongbo gone and Jiang Qing missing, Ning Ge suspected foul play was involved.
Furthermore, despite his diabetes, Gao Hongbo was otherwise healthy and not even sixty years old. How could he possibly die so unexpectedly? And the secrecy surrounding Jiang Qing – could anyone credibly believe she was hidden away without any contact? It defied logic.
Ning Ge detested being kept in the dark about significant events, prompting him to contact Bai Ying.
"Find out how this old man truly died. I refuse to believe this 'died of illness' story. I need to know the real situation," Ning Ge instructed Bai Ying. "Additionally, where has Jiang Qing disappeared to? Discover that for me as well!"
Bai Ying regarded him with mild irritation. "Fourth Young Master Ning, you now present yourself as a model 'upstanding citizen.' Is it truly appropriate for you to task me with investigating such matters? You were once part of our world; you ought to know the rules!"
Ning Ge let out a soft chuckle, sliding a box towards her. "This is a birthday present for you."
Bai Ying glanced at the box, then rolled her eyes dismissively. "I can only provide you with the publicly available information."
"Understood!"
