Cheng Su's family received a desirable new housing allocation, causing happiness among them and envy among their neighbors. Sister-in-law Song was particularly covetous of their current, newly renovated apartment. Meanwhile, a dispute erupted between Chunhua and Sister-in-law Song over mysteriously disappearing cooking oil, with Chunhua accusing Sister-in-law Song of theft.

Observing Chunhua’s resolute expression, Sister-in-law Song was struck with rage and humiliation. With a sharp cry, she prepared to engage Chunhua in a physical altercation.

Cheng Su, startled by the sudden outburst, quickly intervened between the two women. "Sister-in-law Song, let's discuss this calmly," she urged. "We are all neighbors; there's no need for violence."

"Cheng Su, move aside," Chunhua retorted, forcibly pushing Cheng Su out of the way. "I want to see if she even dares to lay a hand on me! She’s been up to no good and thinks she's in the right, even daring to strike someone!" Chunhua's voice boomed with anger. "I will report this to the leaders, take it to the organization, and have her disciplined. Let's see who's right then."

The mention of official discipline caused Sister-in-law Song's raised hand to falter. Her gaze shifted evasively, and she quickly fired back, her voice loud and defiant, "Go ahead, take it to them! I say you are slandering me! Without any proof, how can you call me a thief?"

Chunhua let out a derisive snort. "Then tell me, whose insides rotted when my home's oil went missing? Can you swear on it?"

"Why should I swear? I did not do it!" Sister-in-law Song declared. "Just because my family is poor, you assume it was me? You're looking down on people."

"Bah! Everyone knows your usual behavior," Chunhua spat with contempt. "Aunt Cheng buys two bunches of scallions, and you find an excuse to take one. What's a little oil compared to that? You are utterly shameless."

"You! You! I will ruin your mouth!" Sister-in-law Song's hand shot up, her fingers clawing the air.

"Bring it on! Who's afraid of whom?"

"Stop it!" Cheng Su's voice cut through the escalating tension.

The aggressive confrontation between Chunhua and Sister-in-law Song immediately ceased.

"We are all neighbors; why are we making such a scene?" Cheng Su asked placidly. "Can't anything be discussed openly?" She turned to Chunhua. "Chunhua, you too. Without concrete evidence, do not make baseless accusations."

"Who else could it be?" Chunhua questioned coldly. "She is so stingy, she'd try to take home poop if she thought it could be useful!"

"Sister Qi is correct; you have no proof. This is slander, and I could sue you for it!" Sister-in-law Song exclaimed, a pleased smirk on her face.

"Sister-in-law Song, you too," Cheng Su interjected. "A bit of oil is hardly a major issue. If you were short, you only needed to say so. We could have shared a little, couldn't we?" she recalled. "Last time, you didn't have enough oil to fry peanuts; didn't I lend you some of mine?"

"When did you lend me any?"

"I definitely did, just a few days ago," Cheng Su insisted, deliberately furrowing her brow. "You used it and now you won't admit it. Isn't that wrong?"

"No, I used Chunhua's..." Sister-in-law Song suddenly clamped her hand over her mouth, her eyes wide with fear as she looked at the two women.

It was a terrible mistake!

"Well, well! The fox's tail has shown itself! You've confessed without even being pressured!" Chunhua cackled triumphantly.

Cheng Su's brow furrowed deeply. She had merely been bluffing. In truth, she hadn't actually seen Sister-in-law Song take oil from Chunhua's home. However, their cabinets were adjacent, and she had vaguely noticed Sister-in-law Song placing something back into Chunhua's cabinet earlier. At the time, she hadn't thought much of it.

Realizing her slip-up, Sister-in-law Song immediately burst into tears. "Wonderful! You've ganged up to bully me, an outsider."

She then descended into a fit of wailing and vulgar curses.

"Sister-in-law Song, that's enough," Cheng Su said calmly. "If this matter truly goes to the leaders, Platoon Leader Song might find himself in trouble. Official discipline would be quite a messy affair."

The loud wailing abruptly ceased.

"Furthermore, we are neighbors, and we see each other constantly," Cheng Su continued. "If there's a shortfall, just say the word, and we can help if we're able. But resorting to theft and sneakiness is pointless. Sister-in-law Song, you have two sons who are about to start kindergarten. You wouldn't want them to be embarrassed, would you? And Platoon Leader Song! If this incident were to become public knowledge, would they still have any dignity left?" Cheng Su added pointedly.

Sister-in-law Song, visibly flustered, glanced from Cheng Su to the still-smug Chunhua. Her tone softened considerably. "I... I only took a little. Can't I just return it?" she asked hesitantly.
