Cheng Su brought her son, Qi Xiaoqi, to a housing lottery event in the army, hoping his pure hands would bring her luck. Despite some sour comments from others, Cheng Su remained cheerful. She ultimately drew unit 402, a desired apartment with good ventilation, much to her and Qi Taiguo's delight.

Amidst the housing allocation, a spectrum of reactions emerged: delight, concern, and envy. Those fortunate enough to secure a favorable floor and layout, much like Cheng Su’s family, rejoiced, while residents on lower floors facing northwest fretted about the impending summer heat.

Nevertheless, obtaining any residence, regardless of its perceived quality, was a significant improvement over complete ineligibility.

The specific apartment layouts assigned to each family were officially documented, with the expectation of moving in once the new buildings were completed.

Cheng Su and her family, ecstatic over their advantageous housing assignment, even held a small celebration. However, their good fortune ignited envy and jealousy in many, with some already eyeing Cheng Su’s vacated former residence.

The reason for this covetous gaze?

Upon the family's relocation to their new home, their current dormitory would naturally become available. It was widely known that Cheng Su's household had undertaken renovations only a few years prior, making the prospect of moving into it considerably more appealing than their current living conditions.

Consequently, individuals holding positions above deputy company level began to subtly maneuver for a chance to claim that desirable dwelling.

Even the neighboring Sister-in-law Song harbored ambitions for the house!

"I truly wonder at her audacity. Her husband, Song Cheng, is, to put it mildly, merely a platoon leader. How could he possibly arrange to acquire Cheng Su's house? Such unadulterated wishful thinking!" Chunhua scoffed to Guiying.

Guiying offered a knowing smile, remaining silent. She too found Sister-in-law Song's aspirations rather fanciful.

As for Cheng Su herself, she maintained a neutral stance. Provided one acted with integrity, abstaining from theft or deceit and relying solely on legitimate means, she conceded that perhaps the right to occupy that house might indeed be secured.

What Cheng Su had not anticipated, however, was that Sister-in-law Song would resort to such underhanded tactics.

One particular day, as Cheng Su returned from her morning run on the field, she overheard an argument between Sister-in-law Song and Chunhua.

"...I've always kept track of my oil here. I know precisely how much I've used. It's peculiar; I eat at the factory daily, and my Old Liang also dines at the canteen. We only use a minimal amount of oil in the evenings, yet it diminishes day by day. If you aren't the one secretly taking it, then who could it be?" Chunhua demanded loudly from the kitchen. "We are all neighbors. Is there any merit in engaging in such clandestine activities?"

"Who secretly used it? Which of your eyes witnessed me doing so?" Sister-in-law Song retorted fiercely.

Chunhua sneered, "If it wasn't you, then who else could it be? Normally, it's mice that steal oil. Have you, Chen Datao, somehow transformed into a rodent? My oil has always remained constant over the years; it never decreased. Since your arrival, it dwindles daily. Ha."

Chen Datao was, in fact, Sister-in-law Song's given name. Upon hearing Chunhua's accusation, a flicker of evasion crossed her eyes, though she quickly composed herself. "How amusing. In this kitchen, people come and go constantly. Anyone could have accessed it. You have no proof, so why are you pointing fingers at me?"

Cheng Su's brow furrowed at the exchange. She walked over and inquired, "What seems to be the matter here?"

"You've arrived at a most opportune moment. In the past, when Hualing was still here, whose oil among us was ever found to be short when kept in common storage? It was always managed perfectly. Then, she moved in, and my oil began to deplete. If it isn't her, then who? You, Cheng Su, possess wealth; would you stoop to such actions? Guiying, too, her family operates an oil mill and sources their oil directly from home." Chunhua explained indignantly. "I'm not particularly concerned about a few drops of oil, but we are neighbors, living in close proximity. Is it not shameful to engage in such petty thievery? Today it's pilfering oil; tomorrow, will it be breaking into homes to steal possessions? Cheng Su, you must exercise caution; always secure your doors. You wouldn't want to regret it once a thief strikes!"

"Liang Family, who are you brazenly calling a thief?" Sister-in-law Song shrieked furiously.

"Whoever claims the title is the one!" Chunhua retorted with a sneer.
