The event for Qi Xiaoqi was quite a lively affair. He, being handsome and well-mannered, was particularly radiant today, greeting everyone with a smile. All the adults affectionately called him a treasure. Upon reaching Cheng Yaozu's table, a playful rivalry began between Cheng Yaozu and Ning Ge over the child.
Their 'competition' wasn't ordinary; it revolved around which family's daughter Qi Xiaoqi would eventually marry.
"You want to contend with me? My wife is already expecting, due to give birth any moment now. And you? You don't even have a girlfriend, let alone a wife. How can you possibly compete?" Cheng Yaozu declared smugly, casting a glance at Ning Ge.
Ning Ge retorted, "Don't get too pleased with yourself. I might still outpace you. Besides, he is my godson!"
"Then there's nothing more to discuss. Your godson and your daughter, isn't that a bit of a tangle..." Cheng Yaozu chuckled.
"You're one to talk. You are still Qi Xiaoqi's fourth uncle!" Ning Ge calmly fired back.
Cheng Yaozu blinked, momentarily speechless.
A wave of laughter swept through the guests.
"You two should really cease this. How old is the boy? My son is barely a month old, and neither of you has even a hint of a child to brag about!" Cheng Su interjected with a smile.
Qi Taiguo chimed in, "Whoever's daughter proves to be as wonderful as my wife, she will be the one I arrange for my son to marry."
Ah, so the goal is to have a son and then find a daughter-in-law who resembles his own wife.
Cheng Su rolled her eyes; her husband seemed to be acting tipsy without having had a single drop to drink.
Following the event, Qi Xiaoqi received a generous number of red envelopes. While the guests weren't all particularly wealthy, the total sum was still considerable. Cheng Su, for her part, wasn't one to covet the contents of those envelopes.
Upon returning to Mother-in-law's table, which was mostly populated by younger relatives, fewer red envelopes were exchanged. However, with the presence of the older generation, Qi Xiaoqi naturally received abundant affection.
"Come to Grandpa's arms," Father Qi said, extending his arms to embrace his grandson, his eyes filled with palpable love and tenderness.
"Is everyone enjoying the meal? If there isn't enough, we can bring out more," Cheng Su inquired with a pleasant smile.
"I'm stuffed! Auntie, look at my belly, it's so round," Qi Fenglian's son, Xiao Bao, patted his full stomach.
"Truly? Then you shouldn't eat any more, or you might feel uncomfortable," Cheng Su chuckled, patting his little shaved head. She then advised Qi Fenglian, "Make sure he drinks some hawthorn water to aid digestion when you get home."
"It's quite alright; he ate well. I was watching," Qi Fenglian replied reassuringly.
Cheng Su nodded and then politely addressed Liu Wenjing's two children. Her considerate demeanor was so notable that even the typically indifferent aunt took notice, inwardly impressed. While this niece-in-law might possess a fiery temper and a strong will, her actions were undeniably impeccable.
As Cheng Su was engaged in conversation with her family, Qi Taiguo sensed something amiss. It wasn't due to any external factor but rather an oddity he perceived in the way his father held his grandson.
Mother Qi had always yearned for a grandson. Yet, with her grandson now seated in Father Qi's arms right beside her, she showed no inclination to hold him. Wasn't that peculiar?
One might assume her legs were the issue, but surely she could still manage to hold a child? Nevertheless, she displayed no desire to do so. Not only did she refrain from holding him, but she also seemed to actively avoid making eye contact with Xiao Qi.
What could be the reason? This behavior was entirely inconsistent with the character of Mother Qi, who had always voiced her strong desire for a grandson!
Puzzled by this turn of events, Qi Taiguo discreetly brought it up with Cheng Su as they were seeing off the departing guests.
"Thank you for coming; please take care!" Cheng Su waved to the dispersing guests with a smile and then confided, "It's not that Mom doesn't want to hold him; she actually doesn't dare to."
Qi Taiguo was utterly bewildered. What could she possibly mean by 'doesn't dare'?
