Following their meal, Qi Fenglian guided the entourage to Cheng Su's residence for them to settle in. Due to her leg injury, Mother Qi required assistance, relying on crutches while Qi Jianguo provided support by carrying her the entire way. Upon their arrival at Cheng Su's home, their presence was met with neighbors who had been conversing, but they prudently departed as Cheng Su's family entered.
Qi Jianguo gently set Mother Qi down on the sofa. Overcome with excitement, she bypassed the offer of tea, her immediate concern being, "Where is my grandson?"
Mother Cheng had already gone inside the room to retrieve Qi Xiaoqi. The infant was still deep in slumber, yet Mother Qi, knowing his grandmother's sentiment, felt his presence was a treasure even in sleep.
"Come now, Xiao Qi, greet your grandma!" Mother Cheng coaxed with a smile, bringing the baby over.
Mother Qi eagerly craned her neck forward. Had her legs been functional, she would have already taken the grandchild into her embrace. Now, as she tenderly received him, she lavished him with loving words, expressing how deeply she had missed him.
Having been nourished for a month, little Qi Xiaoqi had visibly grown. During Cheng Su's pregnancy, her diet rich in apples and milk had resulted in a baby with fair skin and notably thick eyebrows. His appearance strongly echoed Qi Taiguo's, particularly his finely sculpted nose.
Though his eyes were closed in sleep, preventing a direct view, the subtle, elegant curve of their corners promised future beauty.
Mother Qi's gaze was fixed upon him with profound affection, unable to look away. "My precious grandson," she cooed, "you look so intelligent and utterly handsome! Even more so than any picture. Grandma has missed you terribly!"
She bestowed two gentle kisses upon the infant's forehead. Nearby, Cheng Su, who was preparing tea, observed this gesture and her brow furrowed slightly, though she remained silent.
"Father, Aunt, please have some tea." Cheng Su presented the tea, then inquired of a round-faced woman seated nearby, "Are you Jianming's wife?"
Qi Jianming had recently married, prompted by his wife's pregnancy, who was then three months along. They had opted to postpone their wedding ceremony, planning a joint celebration upon the baby's arrival, a common practice in the countryside. Cheng Su, accustomed to such traditions, was meeting her cousin's wife for the first time.
"Yes, Taiguo's wife, this is your sister-in-law, Lai Rong," the aunt replied, accepting the tea. She then introduced her daughter-in-law, "This is your eldest cousin's wife; she is quite capable!"
Lai Rong offered a pleasant smile and greeted Cheng Su, "I came with Mother-in-law to get acquainted. I apologize if we've caused any inconvenience, Sister-in-law."
"We are family, so there is no inconvenience. Did you have a tiring journey?" Cheng Su engaged Lai Rong in conversation, quickly forming a positive impression of her cousin's wife.
"Mom, may I hold my little nephew too?" Qi Fengping also expressed admiration for the infant. His fair, delicate features and pristine appearance stood in stark contrast to the newborns she had seen in the village, making him incredibly endearing.
However, Mother Qi was unwilling to relinquish her grandson, content to simply admire him.
"You don't know how to hold him properly; just look!" Mother Qi admonished her daughter.
Qi Fengping merely rolled her eyes, choosing not to engage in further argument.
Mother Qi seemed to relish the attention, and the others, sensing her delight, wisely chose to surround the child, offering continuous praise.
Lai Rong, too, observed Qi Xiaoqi's refined features, finding him truly charming. "This little nephew is remarkably handsome, with such fair skin," she remarked to Cheng Su. "He seems to have inherited your fair complexion, Sister-in-law!" She then mused whether her own child would be as beautiful.
Cheng Su advised her to consume more apples and, if possible, drink milk regularly, noting its benefits. Lai Rong responded with a warm smile.
Cheng Su noticed Mother Qi gently bouncing Qi Xiaoqi and kissing him. "Mom," she intervened, "he is sleeping; please do not bounce him."
It was understood that excessive jostling could be detrimental to an infant's developing brain, and frequent kissing posed a risk of bacterial infection due to their underdeveloped immune systems. This was why Cheng Su had been firm with Qi Taiguo and others about refraining from kissing the child's lips too often.
Upon hearing this, Mother Qi appeared displeased and was about to voice a comment when Qi Xiaoqi's eyes fluttered open.
