Qi Taiguo and Cheng Su discuss arrangements for their son Qi Xiaoqi's full-month banquet, noting that fewer guests are coming due to the distance. Qi Taiguo's workload is explained by upcoming holidays and potential promotion opportunities, which Cheng Su acknowledges as good luck brought by their son.

Qi Taiguo arranged for his cousin Deng Weiqiu to secure a position as a helper in the army’s cafeteria, complete with a monthly salary of several dozen yuan. Having endured significant hardships previously, she was no longer in a position to refuse such an offer. Her plan was to commence this new role after attending Xiao Qi’s upcoming full moon banquet.

However, her aunt interjected with a different suggestion: "Being a helper means endless washing and chopping; it's exhausting. Your second brother toils away in the kitchen, and you too will be in the cafeteria? I observed your cousin assisting her cousin-in-law with managing the shop, and that seems like much lighter work!"

Liu Wenjing, occupied with feeding her son nearby, listened to this conversation without uttering a word.

Deng Weiqiu responded to her mother, "Mom, my cousin-in-law doesn't have another shop for me to manage. Things are quite stable now; the army provides meals and a salary. My cousin mentioned that even though it's in the cafeteria, it's not overly demanding, just the preparation of three meals daily."

It was a rare opportunity for someone to offer assistance, and she truly couldn't afford to be picky anymore. This arrangement was far superior to earning a meager ten yuan at home while working from dawn till dusk.

Furthermore, life in the army might be advantageous; perhaps she could even find a suitable partner there!

Her aunt sighed dramatically, "After all, familial ties are complex; let's not dwell on it. Now that you're in the army, there will be plenty of young men around. Keep your eyes open and see if there's anyone you fancy. You're not getting any younger; don't let more time slip away!"

Deng Weiqiu cast a glance at Liu Wenjing, whose head was bowed. A flicker of resentment crossed her eyes. If it weren't for the actions of her and her second brother, would she have found herself in this protracted situation?

Despite her feelings, she remained silent, unwilling to provoke her aunt and risk losing this opportunity. She genuinely did not want to face the burden of caring for her mother alone again.

"I understand!" Deng Weiqiu conceded.

Liu Wenjing listened, a resigned sigh escaping her.

Upon Deng Weixia’s return, Liu Wenjing remarked, "It's a pity I have to look after two children; otherwise, I'd much rather go out and work to earn some household money and contribute. " This was preferable to enduring her mother-in-law's perpetually gloomy disposition at home.

Deng Weixia observed her spouse cautiously, asking, "Did Mom give you a hard time again?"

Liu Wenjing's lips twitched slightly as she forced a smile.

Deng Weixia continued, "It's tough for you, especially with Mom's leg condition. If she were able, she could help care for the children. Once the boys grow up and no longer require constant attention, you can then consider going out to work!"

Liu Wenjing nodded in agreement.

Deng Weixia took her hand, offering words of comfort, "Life is challenging right now, but don't worry, it will improve. I've started learning to cook, and once I'm proficient, perhaps I can specialize in stir-frying. When we have sufficient funds and the capability, maybe we can even open a small restaurant."

Liu Wenjing quickly interjected, "Don't think like that. Our cousin and cousin-in-law have rarely considered us, yet they even found a job for you. How could you possibly start your own business after becoming skilled?" Wouldn't that be seen as ungrateful?

Deng Weixia smiled reassuringly, "Rest assured, I have no intention of burning bridges; I'm merely offering you a sense of hope. Once I master the skills, whether I work for someone else or venture out on my own, both are viable paths. Besides, opening a small restaurant requires significant capital; it's not as simple as it sounds. For now, let me focus on honing my abilities!"

Liu Wenjing let out a breath of relief, saying, "That's good. Future plans can be discussed later; for now, let's just take things one step at a time!"

Deng Weixia embraced her, murmuring, "You've been through so much!" Then she asked, "Do you have any regrets?"

Liu Wenjing felt a chill run down her spine. To say she had no regrets would be a falsehood, especially under the immense psychological pressure she faced, dealing with the attitudes of her mother-in-law and sister-in-law. It was exactly as Cheng Su had lamented back then; even if she had left the children behind, it would have been easier than her current situation.

But what was the point of regret? The decision was made impulsively, and they could only look towards the future!

"I do regret it," Liu Wenjing confessed. Looking at Deng Weixia and seeing the hurt in his eyes, she added, "We should have persuaded Mom first back then; we shouldn't have made you leave home."

"I'm not afraid. As long as we're together, that's what truly matters. Things will get better down the road!" Deng Weixia held her tightly.

Liu Wenjing remained silent. Indeed, the future promised improvement!
