Once Cheng Su wrapped up her postpartum confinement, even though Mother Cheng suggested staying put for over forty-five days ideally, she didn't make a big deal of it. Cheng Su kept downing her nourishing tonics but just couldn't stay cooped up indoors any longer.
Her first outing took her to the train station's fast food eatery. This spot had been running for years, booming thanks to the endless crowds passing through.
"Auntie, what brings you here?" Xiao Yun's sharp gaze picked out Cheng Su instantly, rushing over with a warm welcome.
Since starting school here last year, Xiao Yun had turned far more sociable, especially hitting those growing years. With meat always plentiful in a fast food joint, she was blossoming into a proper young lady.
This summer vacation, Mother Qi's broken leg left her little brother without care, so Xiao Yun headed home to pitch in for a bit. By August, Shi Ling quit, taking daughter Xiaohua off to remarry, leaving the eatery shorthanded. Xiao Yun offered to work the summer gig for some spending cash before classes kicked off.
She'd sprouted taller, girls crave prettying up, and such eagerness to earn pocket money was rare for her. The fast food work hinged on speedy moves anyway, so after chatting it over, Qi Fenglian and Cheng Su agreed to hire her for a month with proper pay.
"I came to have a look." Cheng Su took her hand, stepping inside while asking, "How’s the work? Doing okay?"
"It’s great, pretty simple tasks, not too tiring, and I can handle it. Auntie, are you doing well? Is my cousin Xiao Qi being good?" Xiao Yun thoughtfully poured her a cup of water.
Cheng Su's heart warmed as she said, "Not bad, working a few days and you’ve become considerate!"
Qi Fenglian caught the chatter and emerged from the kitchen, startled to spot her. "How do you have time to come by? You just finished the confinement; it’s good to rest a few more days!" she asked.
"No worries, I was bored at home, so I came out for a walk, checking how things are at the restaurant, managing everything okay?" Cheng Su replied.
"Everything’s fine. I promoted Tao Hua to be the shift leader." Qi Fenglian said, then probed about her baby.
Cheng Su fielded every question.
Qi Fenglian noted her glowing cheeks, far rounder than before, commenting, "Mother-in-law is taking good care of you. Seeing your complexion, you had a comfortable confinement period."
For any woman, nailing the postpartum phase matters most, and Cheng Su's fresh look proved hers had been smooth sailing.
Cheng Su smiled, "Eating chicken and pig liver every day, how could my complexion be bad? Haven’t I gotten rounder?"
"That’s wonderful, brings good fortune!" Qi Fenglian praised.
Just as Cheng Su parted her lips to respond, the doorway shadowed over as a figure stepped in from outside.
"Fenglian, I bought some chestnuts..."
The arrival cut off mid-word at the sight of Cheng Su, Qi Fenglian's face shifting through expressions. She hurried forward, murmuring quietly, "Why are you here?"
"I saw someone selling chestnuts at the street corner, they’re very fresh, so I bought some over for you two to have a taste."
Cheng Su observed with keen interest. The man seemed around forty, sporting a gentle face, burly frame, and crisp clothing.
"Came to curry favor again!" Xiao Yun grumbled softly nearby.
Cheng Su smiled with sudden insight.
The word "again" gave away that this fellow dropped by often.
Qi Fenglian shooed the man off. He nodded politely to Cheng Su and departed.
Cheng Su glanced at the hefty sack of chestnuts clutched in Qi Fenglian’s grip, waving Xiao Yun to the kitchen. Laughing, she queried, "Elder Sister, who is this? Coming so early in the morning with such a big bag of chestnuts for you."
Could it be that Elder Sister’s springtime has arrived?
Qi Fenglian blushed.
