The sweet couple made their way back home, and while passing by Song Cheng’s room, a thunderous yell from Sister-in-law Song jolted Cheng Su.
Upon listening closer, Sister-in-law Song was berating her two kids, who then burst into tears, after which Song Cheng’s steady voice intervened calmly, noting the kids were still young and needed patient teaching, while asking why she yelled so fiercely like that.
Cheng Su and Qi Taiguo shared a look and shook their heads in unison.
This family had only settled in days earlier, yet Sister-in-law Song’s thunderous voice had already gained fame. Forget Cheng Su and the nearby neighbors—even folks from upstairs and downstairs could catch her bellowing clearly.
Her shouts weren’t just loud; busybodies whispered that during intimate moments, she’d cry out to the skies too, leaving things mighty awkward and mortifying.
Song Cheng stepped out from the room, spotting Cheng Su and Qi Taiguo, his cheeks flushing hot as he gave a slight nod before heading to the kitchen.
Cheng Su and Qi Taiguo felt their own faces burn with embarrassment, like they’d been busted spying, and they rushed into their room.
Inside, Mother Cheng was seen pacing the living room while cradling Qi Xiaoqi.
Cheng Su stepped up and remarked, “What’s wrong, has the little one not gone to sleep yet?” as she extended her arms to hold him.
Mother Cheng’s face was grim as she replied, “He’d barely shut his eyes when that bellow from next door jolted him awake, even made him tremble—it breaks my heart!”
During her daughter’s confinement, she was lending a hand with childcare and pouring all her love into her grandson. Witnessing him so startled, how could she not feel her heart twist?
“Did he cry?” Cheng Su’s heart ached at the news; after all, Sister-in-law Song’s roar had shaken her, much less the tiny baby.
Mother Cheng beamed with pride, “Not at all. Our little Xiao Qi is tough, just startled without shedding tears, only pouted slightly.”
Cheng Su gazed at her boy and sure enough, his eyes were wide open without any tear traces, prompting her to exclaim, “My son is truly amazing!”
Qi Taiguo chimed in proudly, “He’s the seed of me, Qi Taiguo—brave to the core!”
Cheng Su shot him an eye roll, carried her son to the bedroom to feed and soothe him to sleep, then told Mother Cheng, “Mom, you go rest now, I’ve got him!”
Mother Cheng had hustled all day handling chores, cooking, laundry, and even diaper washing—though Qi Taiguo pitched in, she pitied her son-in-law and handled most herself. Good thing she was swift and spry, but age was catching up, so rest was wise.
“No worries, I’ll catch some TV then hit the sack.” Mother Cheng dismissed with a wave; these days, she relished a few episodes of dramas before bed.
Cheng Su let it go, cradling her son for nursing as Qi Taiguo trailed behind into the room.
“Sister-in-law Song’s voice is unreal—does she have a megaphone or what? Good we got a boy; a girl might’ve been scared to sobs by now, who knows how we’d soothe her!” Cheng Su vented her annoyance.
“Girl or not, carrying our bold spirit, she wouldn’t scare easy!” Qi Taiguo lounged on the bed, head propped on one hand, idly eyeing her feed the baby.
Cheng Su scolded him lightly, “You’re convinced your kid’s perfect!”
“Naturally!”
Cheng Su sighed in mock despair, then brought up the upcoming full moon banquet, chatting with him: “With so many families filling up the compound now, rooms are scarce—quit pulling strings with your job to snag spots here. When folks from home show up, like my dad, your parents, and extra kin, since it’ll be late post-banquet, maybe reserve guest house rooms for a night or two!”
Qi Taiguo paid close heed to her plans, and together they mapped everything meticulously before drifting off to sleep.
