Sister-in-law Song visited Cheng Su empty-handed, devoured snacks voraciously while chattering loudly, ignoring hints of fatigue. Cheng Su's baby cried from the noise, forcing her to insistently urge the guests to leave amid protests from the children. Finally departing, the shameless neighbor left a mess, prompting Cheng Su and her mother to resolve keeping the door closed until the houses are divided.

Cheng Su could hardly tolerate the bold manner of the new neighbor. She inquired with Qi Taiguo about the rumors, curious how a man like Song Cheng, with his rugged tough-guy vibe, ended up married to someone like that.

Qi Taiguo chuckled and replied, "Soldiers, especially fresh recruits, rarely get to go home often. How many tie the knot for love? Most are matchmade or family-arranged. Platoon Leader Song's situation was the same."

"Arranged marriage?" Cheng Su understood. That explained the mismatched couple.

"Song Cheng keeps to himself, but when he first arrived, I overheard folks chatting about his background. Apparently, he married without returning home. His grandfather was gravely ill and anxious over his grandson's single status, believing a wedding might bless his recovery. So the family fetched a bride. When Song Cheng got leave later, they held the ceremony," Qi Taiguo detailed.

Cheng Su's mouth fell open, "Brought a bride just for luck? Did it help?"

"I wouldn't know; no way I'd dig that deep into their private business," Qi Taiguo laughed lightly.

Cheng Su remarked, "I'm not trying to be small-minded, but from today's chat alone, Sister-in-law Song struck me as incredibly shameless, super straightforward!"

"Neighbors bump into each other all the time. They're new here, so give it time to adjust. If it's too much, just keep distance," Qi Taiguo thought aloud, then suggested, "Platoon Leader Song's wife has lived rurally forever, so city ways might confuse her. As a neighbor, if she's decent at heart, perhaps guide her a bit."

Cheng Su responded, "Guide how? She straight-up described how her children were conceived, almost spilling every detail."

Qi Taiguo smirked to himself, "Don't you and Hualing chat about intimate stuff too sometimes?"

Cheng Su jabbed back playfully, "Sure, but we've been neighbors forever—who spills to a stranger right away?"

"Fine, fine, she's less educated than you, not as worldly. Show some patience," Qi Taiguo murmured while softly gripping her tender hand.

Cheng Su tugged to free herself but failed; her cheeks flushed as he clasped her palm, chiding, "Sun's still up—what's gotten into you?"

Qi Taiguo rolled toward her and whispered, "Must we wait for nightfall? Can't spouses flirt whenever?" In a whining voice, he pleaded, "I miss you so much!"

Cheng Su flushed deeply and swatted him lightly, "Cut it out—what sleazy novels have you devoured to behave this way on return?"

"It's true; check if you doubt," Qi Taiguo seized her hand and directed it to his groin.

Indeed, it stood firm.

Cheng Su's face burned crimson; spotting her son observing, she yanked her hand free, yelping, "You're courting disaster—the child's right there watching!"

Qi Taiguo glanced and saw the boy's huge dark eyes fixed on them, groaning dramatically, "Send him to sleep at grandma's tonight!"

Cheng Su giggled, "Even at mom's, what then? She insists on a full forty-five days postpartum confinement—the longer, the better!"

"Save me, heavens!" Qi Taiguo wailed despairingly, drawing booming laughter from Cheng Su. Though action was off-limits, he savored clutching her hand, ignoring their son's stunned stare.

Qi Xiaoqi observed his parents' antics, heart aching; he sighed at the ceiling, yearning for someone to whisk him to grandma's bed. These two were corrupting the innocent blooms of the nation!
