Cheng Su neared the end of her confinement, her complexion glowing and figure rounding healthily from nourishing meals, though she planned to diet later. Her family firmly opposed any weight loss to ensure ample milk for Qi Xiaoqi. New neighbor Sister-in-law Song visited with her twin sons, rudely peeking into private rooms, which displeased Cheng Su despite her polite hospitality as the children eyed the fruits.

Noticing the children's eager gazes, Cheng Su handed an apple to each one. After the kids received theirs, she remembered Sister-in-law Song too, saying, "Sister-in-law Song, you have one too."

"Ah, I won’t be polite then!" Sister-in-law Song swiftly selected a big apple, rubbed it against her clothes, chomped down with a crisp crunch, and chuckled, "So sweet."

A black line slid across Cheng Su’s forehead.

Usually, she shared with kids because they were young, and her offers to grown-ups were mere courtesy, yet Sister-in-law Song took it without a second thought—bold and direct, truthfully rather rude, zero manners.

Naturally, Cheng Su wasn't miserly enough to grudge a single apple. Whenever Guiying visited with her little ones, she treated Cancan to snacks, and Guiying returned the favor. However, Sister-in-law Song's brazen attitude felt a little jarring.

The twins beamed broadly while clutching their apples. Cheng Su learned their names: the older boy Song Jiawen, the younger Song Jiawu. She switched the TV to the cartoons channel for their viewing pleasure.

"Sister-in-law Song, are you adjusting to the new home?" Cheng Su inquired.

"Oh, speaking of that, it’s really hard to get used to. The house is as small as our old outhouse, very cramped. Back home, we had six big, bright tile-roofed houses, comfy and cool. Here, it feels like a steamer, too hot!" With apple in mouth, Sister-in-law Song spoke while flecking juice everywhere.

Cheng Su seized the chance to fetch a cup, inching subtly farther back, and remarked, "Your place is indeed a bit small!"

"Isn’t it just? But what can we do? Our Old Song is just a junior officer, so he doesn’t qualify for a bigger house. Unlike you folks, Deputy Battalion Commander Qi has such a high rank, your place must be bright and comfortable." Envy filled Sister-in-law Song’s tone as she added, "I also heard you’re doing big business? Running a large restaurant, is it?"

Cheng Su’s eyebrows creased faintly. "It’s just a small business. So, your hometown is..."

She preferred not to dwell on her business and deftly changed the subject.

"Oh, we’re from over in Xiangxi. There’s water at home, so it’s really cool. Actually, city houses are small, too cramped. I just thought the kids were growing, and since Old Song was transferred here, there’s a kindergarten, so I applied to join the family." Sister-in-law Song smoothly followed the shift and kept going, "I married Old Song several years ago. He used to be stationed at the border, could hardly come home for years. There were elders and children back home, so I couldn’t easily join him. These sons were born a few years back when I visited him, couldn’t help it, he couldn’t come back, I couldn’t join, family urged for kids, so I went over and, well, got pregnant and then went back home to give birth."

What a spicy big mouth!

Cheng Su sensed her lips twitching once more. Sister-in-law Song, is it truly fine to blab about private bedroom stuff like this?

A slight flush colored her cheeks as she responded, "Being a military wife is like that, no choice."

"Isn’t it? We’ve been married ten years, lived apart all the time, and our kids are only five, wonder why?" Sister-in-law Song acted like she'd found a true listener and pressed on, "And this year, my brother-in-law got married, can take care of the elders, and seeing the kids growing up, not fitting to stay back in the hometown doing nothing, need to get into kindergarten. This year Old Song got transferred to Qing City, that’s why I applied to join the family. Otherwise, how could I come? But even now, this house is really small, sigh."

Cheng Su gave a soft smile. "You’ll get used to it slowly. Have the kids been enrolled yet?"

"We’ve been sorting things out these days, their dad is taking care of it, I’m not involved, heard everything is set, they can start in September!" Sister-in-law Song replied.

Upon hearing this, Cheng Su provided some reassurance, mentioning how things would improve once the children started school.
