In their family home, Mother Qi repeatedly paged through the photo album Father Qi had brought back, caressing her grandson's face in the picture with affection, even lifting it to plant a kiss on it. Seeing this, Qi Fengping couldn't help rolling her eyes.
"Mom, you've already flipped through it so many times. It's barely morning, and you've just been clutching that album. Do you think staring at it will fill your stomach?" Qi Fengping teased.
"This is none of your concern. Look at your eldest nephew— isn't he simply precious? Too bad my leg isn't working right; it picked the worst time to fail, or I'd be gazing at that album non-stop," Mother Qi responded.
From the photograph alone, she could tell her grandson was smart and charming from birth, filling her with love for him. Sadly, she couldn't lay eyes on him personally or cradle him in her arms. Sigh, it was all because she lacked the strength!
"Your grandson won't vanish anywhere. Once your leg mends, you can visit him whenever you like!" Qi Fengping said. "Now come eat breakfast first!"
"Heaven knows when this leg will function again?" Mother Qi grumbled sourly. "Right now, your sister-in-law's mother is the one caring for him. She's the fortunate one."
Mother Qi's words betrayed the jealousy she couldn't conceal.
Qi Fengping muffled a laugh behind her hand.
Upon Father Qi's return from the fields, Mother Qi bombarded him with questions about her grandson once more.
"Old lady, you grilled me about this several times yesterday," Father Qi sighed tiredly. "Xiao Qi is thriving. He eats heartily and sleeps deeply, so don't worry. The in-laws are looking after him splendidly!"
Mother Qi puckered her lips, then suddenly recalled: "What was the baby's name again?"
"Xiao Qi—that's the nickname they chose for him."
"Why call him Xiao Qi? Seven brings bad luck, it's ominous," Mother Qi frowned at the news. "A solid, everyday name is preferable; it anchors the child and wards off disasters."
"It's merely a phonetic twist; seven echoes Qi. It's only a nickname, no big deal," Father Qi brushed it off.
"And the official name? Did you mention the baby needs more Metal element?" Mother Qi grew a little frantic.
Father Qi answered, "It's Qi Fang. I learned our daughter-in-law dreamed of a blooming garden during her pregnancy, so that's how they settled on it!"
"What kind of silliness is that? Qi Fang—what sort of name is it? No 'Metal' radical anywhere." Mother Qi's face turned stormy. "Didn't you inform them? I stressed how crucial names are; a poor one can ruin a man's life. They can't just pick whatever suits them!"
The more she dwelled on it, the angrier she got, declaring, "No, I have to speak with them myself. Qi Fang—it's awful, doesn't sit right at all!"
Father Qi noticed her reaching for the crutches and urged, "Just stay put. They're his parents; they get to choose his name as they see fit. Anyway, Qi Fang has a pleasant ring to it. Don't you agree, Fengping?" He glanced at his daughter with a knowing wink.
Qi Fengping picked up on the hint and chimed in, "Yes, Mom, it's a stylish name, really sounds good."
"Pah! It sounds terrible. No doubt, this is your sister-in-law's doing. That 'garden in full bloom' story is nonsense. The nickname Xiao Qi can stay, but the formal name can't be botched. Your eldest nephew is the family's firstborn grandson. A bad name could spell trouble down the line!" Mother Qi fumed, determined to confront her son.
"You're too superstitious. The name's perfectly fine. Better not stir up issues. Your daughter-in-law is still in confinement, and upsetting her could harm her recovery. How will that affect her health later?" Father Qi advised calmly. "Your grandson is in her care now. If you rile her up and she won't let the child visit, will you be sorry then?"
Mother Qi went rigid upon hearing this.
