Cheng Su noticed Qi Taiguo being all lovey-dovey right in front of her mother, and she couldn't resist snapping at him: "What are you doing? My mom's right here!"
Qi Taiguo gave a bashful little laugh.
Mother Cheng chimed in, "I saw nothing at all."
That's the stark contrast between a mother-in-law and one's own mom. Were Mother Qi present, jealousy might flare up. But a mother-in-law? She'd adore seeing her daughter and son-in-law get even cozier.
Cheng Su gazed at her baby boy, her eyes brimming with tender love. This little one, born at the cost of her very life, was her dearest blood relative. Simply beholding him filled her heart as if she'd claimed the entire universe.
The baby's eyelids twitched, seeming ready to peek open. Cheng Su cried out joyfully, "He's waking up!"
Qi Taiguo and everyone else rushed to peer over, watching as he gradually unveiled his eyes. Though his stare remained blurry, those peepers were huge, resembling shiny black grapes.
Mother Cheng remarked, "What gorgeous eyes, so big and bright."
"They take after yours!" Qi Taiguo grinned at Cheng Su.
Cheng Su possessed notably large eyes herself. Staring into her son's sparkling dark orbs, joy bubbled within her, and she declared, "Naturally, since he's my boy!"
Qi Taiguo burst into laughter.
After some light conversation, exhaustion overtook Cheng Su, who was still weak from childbirth. Qi Taiguo promptly encouraged her to recline and sleep.
"Be sure to spread the wonderful news far and wide," Cheng Su reminded him.
"Relax and rest easy. Leave it all to me!" Qi Taiguo assured her.
Cheng Su gave a nod and soon slipped into slumber.
The newborn had arrived at ten in the morning, and noon approached. As a fresh mom, Cheng Su craved nourishing food.
Qi Taiguo consulted with Mother Cheng. With his work leave secured, he'd remain by Cheng Su's side, sending Mother Cheng home to prepare soup.
Mother Cheng consented without hesitation, her daughter's well-being topping her priorities. She hurried off home bustling with purpose.
At lunchtime, Hualing showed up. Qi Taiguo requested she watch over things briefly while he sought a public phone to share the joyous update back home.
Qi Jianguo, vacationing at home, picked up the call. Upon hearing his big brother's elated announcement, he yelled out in delight.
"Dad, Mom, hurry over! Big bro just phoned—sister-in-law delivered a big fat healthy son!"
The whole Qi household sprang into action, crowding around eagerly for details.
Over the line, Qi Taiguo was swept by a surge of bliss.
"Taiguo, has your wife delivered? A boy?" Mother Qi, hampered by her limited mobility, somehow reached the phone first, inquiring breathlessly.
"Yes, labor pains hit at four, baby out by ten—a solid six pounds two ounces," Qi Taiguo reported.
"Wonderful, just wonderful. The Qi lineage continues strong. Is the little one healthy? Your wife too? Is her mother there caring for her?" Mother Qi pressed on.
"All good here. Mother-in-law's off brewing soup. Wife's sleeping soundly, baby's thriving. Mom, rest assured!" Qi Taiguo reassured.
Mother Qi responded with a string of "ohs," then Father Qi grabbed the receiver, repeating the queries and getting matching replies. Yet Father Qi emphasized, "Your wife's a true champion for the Qi clan, bearing you a son after such trials. Taiguo, cherish and tend to her properly. Through confinement, don't idle like some overseer—pitch in so she recovers fully."
Qi Taiguo promised it all, mentioning he still needed to notify his in-laws and Cheng Su's godfather's kin, before ending the call.
Post-call, Mother Qi lingered in yearning, yet duty called: incense and prayers. "My grandson's here—I must honor the Bodhisattva and forebears. Jianguo, snag a chicken for the offering..."
