After hearing the update from the two assigned to monitor Chiang Qing, Gao Hongbo gave a subtle nod.
"What did they talk about?"
Exchanging a quick look, the pair hung their heads and replied, "Miss Chiang barred us from entering, and visitation rules prevented it. Still, her eyes were red and swollen when she exited."
Irritation flickered across Gao Hongbo's face as he flicked his hand dismissively. "Fine, you're dismissed!"
Hastily bowing, the two departed at once.
Clad in a light robe within the study, Gao Hongbo didn't head to the bedroom with Chiang Qing until he'd finished his cigar.
Pushing open the door revealed Chiang Qing lying sideways on the bed, back turned to him, her elegant waist curve bare.
Gao Hongbo's eyes intensified. This woman held her own captivating charm, yet she was regrettably too sharp and unyielding.
He settled beside her in silence, yet Chiang Qing rolled over, encircling his waist with her arms.
A hint of astonishment hit Gao Hongbo. Had that single outing finally taught her?
To his surprise, Chiang Qing started weeping quietly.
"What's the matter?" Gao Hongbo inquired.
Chiang Qing merely shook her head, staying silent.
"Your father avoided a life sentence; he'll be free in ten years, perhaps earlier with good conduct. Your mother gets out sooner still—don't fret!" Gao Hongbo assured her.
Glancing up at him, Chiang Qing remarked, "Do you believe my sorrow stems from them?"
Gao Hongbo arched a brow.
"My heart aches, but not for their imprisonment—they earned it. It's my own pain I feel. Why must I have such parents? My dad especially. I'm his flesh and blood, yet he showed such brutality, dispatching me to that hellhole," Chiang Qing vented. "I simply craved some understanding!"
"Did you find it?"
Chiang Qing scoffed, "Understand what? It was all about their prospects, humiliated by me, disgraced. His own daughter, and he acts so vicious—that's my wonderful father!"
Gao Hongbo remained quiet.
"I'll disown him forever. From this day, they're dead to me. No support left except you!" Chiang Qing wailed into his arms—a masterful performance. Tears like hers could readily soften any man's resolve.
For the first time, Chiang Qing had flung herself at him so; Gao Hongbo felt gratified. Realizing this sooner would have settled matters ages ago. His voice gentled as he stroked her back. "Enough crying now. Tears won't enhance your beauty. Rest easy—with me, you'll never lack food, home, or anything else. No worries!"
Pressing her face to his chest, Chiang Qing smirked inwardly but gazed at him through brimming tears. "If I give myself fully to you, will you discard me someday too?"
Gao Hongbo paused in shock before chuckling, "Impossible!"
Yet Chiang Qing writhed slightly and countered, "Why impossible? You're wed with kids. I hold no position. Stepping outside now, I could be labeled a fugitive. To protect your path ahead, if you betray me to the authorities, what recourse do I have?"
Drawing near, Gao Hongbo pivoted her shoulders. "That won't occur. Stop the foolish talk. Who called you a fugitive?"
Chiang Qing compressed her lips. "Given what my parents and maternal grandfather's kin have wrought, I..."
"Were you implicated, you'd be on the wanted list already. Relax—those deeds are theirs alone, unlinked to you," Gao Hongbo reassured.
Though emotion stirred within Chiang Qing, her expression betrayed none as she nestled back into his hold. "That's reassuring. I feared eternal darkness for myself!"
Gao Hongbo's hand trailed her waist.
Revulsion churned inside Chiang Qing, but she refrained from recoiling, instead molding closer. Lightly tracing his lower back, she murmured, "I've been considering a short trip to Jiangnan to unwind..."
