Chiang Qing visited her imprisoned father, Jiang Conghe, seeking information but quickly lost patience and refused to help secure his release. In a furious confrontation, Jiang Conghe blamed her obsession with Qi Taiguo for their family's downfall, while she accused him of abandoning her mother, committing her to a mental asylum, and deserving his loss of freedom. She vowed he would rot in prison as retribution for her suffering, laughing maniacally before departing, leaving him chilled in despair.

Chiang Qing suppressed her fury and frustration, drawing deep breaths right at the prison entrance.

After gulping down several large breaths of air, she climbed into the car and ordered, "Head to the women’s prison!"

She mustn’t act rashly or lose her composure; far more crucial matters demanded her attention.

"Miss, the old man said..."

"I told you to go to the women’s prison. The old man ordered you to obey me, so drive wherever I command! Start the car now." Chiang Qing shot a fierce glare at the driver.

The two up front traded looks, then fastened their seatbelts and quietly headed to the place Chiang Qing had specified.

Chiang Qing stared out the window, fists tightly balled on her lap, her expression as stormy as gathering thunderclouds.

The instant Lu Shufen entered the visitation room, disbelief struck Chiang Qing. Could this be her spoiled, elegant mother? Hair cropped short and disheveled, streaked with gray, wrinkles etching her face, skin sallow and lifeless, just like some farmwife.

Spotting her daughter, Lu Shufen rushed forward: "Qingqing!"

"Sit down!" The guard halted Lu Shufen with a sharp yell, gesturing to the assigned chair.

Lu Shufen’s heart quivered, forcing her to take a seat as she gazed intently at Chiang Qing, asking in worry, "Qingqing, why are you here? Are you okay? Weren’t you at the mental hospital?"

Chiang Qing’s features grew a shade darker; her mother had known her whereabouts yet failed to save her, igniting fresh waves of bitterness.

"Your father’s a monster—he tricked me, claimed you’d gone to the United States, but it was all lies. That scum locked you away there; he deserves to die a thousand times, and his end will be miserable!" Tears streamed down Lu Shufen’s cheeks.

A stir rose in Chiang Qing: "You didn’t know?"

"Know what? He insisted he’d sent you to the United States and even flaunted photos. Then Jiang Dafang revealed you’d been carted off to a mental hospital. He lied to me, that deceitful scum—he’s no human!" Lu Shufen spat out her curses.

Moisture gathered in Chiang Qing’s eyes too.

After venting her rage at length, Lu Shufen inquired, "Qingqing, how’d you get released? Did Xiao Tian come for you?" She peeked at the guard nearby and murmured, "Xiao Tian’s in the United States—has he come back? Was he the one who freed you? Did they hurt you?"

At those words, Chiang Qing’s tears almost brimmed over—hurt? Oh, had she ever!

Her torment cut deeper than the sourest gall.

Chiang Qing averted her gaze and replied, "Xiao Tian didn’t fetch me; I have no clue where he even is!"

Lu Shufen froze: "Then who did?"

"Gao Hongbo." The name escaped Chiang Qing’s lips almost gnashed between clenched teeth, her gaze burning with raw loathing.

Gao Hongbo?

A flicker of surprise hit Lu Shufen at the name, then recognition dawned—her father’s old friend, could it truly be him?

Perfect—he wielded real power and clout.

"That’s fantastic; he’s your grandfather’s buddy, so with him handling things, Mom can rest easy, you..." Lu Shufen started, but Chiang Qing whipped her head around, eyes blazing with intense hatred and killing fury, silencing Lu Shufen mid-sentence. Moments later, she faltered, "Qing, what’s the matter with you?"

Just then did Lu Shufen truly notice Chiang Qing’s look and complexion—so ashen, like a battered doll drained of life, a mere shell showing nothing but venom and ferocity.

What on earth had transpired?

Why wore Qingqing such a terrifying face?

A sudden notion seized Lu Shufen, and she burst out thoughtlessly, "Did he harm you?"
