The group chat discusses tax evasion and its consequences, with Deadpool adamantly refusing to pay. Meanwhile, Ashley disguises herself to avoid the War Church, and Eriri prepares to undergo a test. Scarlet Lotus Fairy shares a photo of a beautiful stewed squab, which Wang Yuyan eyes with intense longing, leading to a humorous interaction.

The second time now.

Li Mochou sighed inwardly, at a complete loss for words.

She had been in this world for barely half an hour, and her bargain-bin sister had already twice told her to stay home for a good long while. Just how much of a sis-con was this woman?

But met with those expectant eyes, she stifled the urge to gripe and gave a light nod. "I should think I'll stay a while, and teach Yan-er some martial arts along the way."

"Wonderful, that's wonderful!" Li Qingluo's face lit up once more. "In that case, I'll leave Yan-er in your hands for this period. Don't go easy on her, this child is simply lazy."

You, madam, are truly her own mother!

Wang Yuyan, hit by stray fire for no reason, could only gape at her mother, utterly dumbfounded. This double standard was far too blatant. Was she really picked up from a roadside ditch, then?

Lazy? Who's lazy? She'd read nearly all the martial arts manuals in the Langhuan Jade Cave already! Every technique, every form, she knew inside and out, and that counted as lazy?

The girl burned with quiet indignation, but she dared not talk back.

Her mother only ever lectured with patient kindness in front of this little aunt. With everyone else she was imperious, and her own daughter was no exception. Talk back, and the whip would come out.

Wang Yuyan, having no wish to be beaten, could only take a deep breath and silently drop her head.

"Lately, has that woman come by?" After a stretch of silence, Li Mochou suddenly asked her bargain-bin sister.

Li Qingluo froze slightly, her expression turning a shade complicated. "No, she hasn't."

She knew perfectly well which woman her sister meant: their own birth mother, Li Qiushui.

From the time they were small, Li Qiushui had scarcely looked after the two sisters at all. Not only had she neglected them, back when the two girls were living in the stone cave deep in the ravine of Boundless Mountain, that mother had actually appeared before them brazenly, male favorite in tow.

Because of it, the younger sister, Li Mochou, nursed a deep grudge against their mother. She had even said to her face that she was a fickle, shameless woman. No wonder their father, Wu Yazi, refused to see her again.

Hearing those words, the mother had flown into a towering rage and struck Li Mochou down with a single palm, gravely wounding her. If Li Qingluo had not begged and pleaded with all her strength, she and her sister might already have been parted by death.

"It's good that she hasn't come." Li Mochou nodded slightly, breathing easier.

She could accept Li Qingluo, this bargain-bin sister. But she plainly could not accept Li Qiushui, that deranged excuse for a mother. If the woman ever appeared before her, Li Mochou feared she wouldn't be able to stop herself from running her through with a sword.

After all, through the memories the system had infused, Li Mochou had fully stepped into her identity in this world. Those childhood sufferings, that bone-deep resentment, they were all perfectly real.

Besides, that Li Qiushui really was a mother beyond the pale. Ever since parting with Wu Yazi, she had felt no love whatsoever for her two daughters, she regarded them as nothing but baggage.

But where Li Mochou felt pure hatred, Li Qingluo still retained some feeling for the woman. "Mochou, I believe our mother may have had difficulties of her own."

"Difficulties?" Li Mochou sneered. "Her 'difficulty' was that we were dragging her down, how else could she live at ease in Western Xia as her empress dowager's self?"

"What?" Before Li Qingluo could speak, Wang Yuyan's face went slack with shock. "Grandmother is the empress dowager of Western Xia?"

The girl was genuinely stunned.

She had known she had a grandmother, and her mother had said the old woman's martial arts were formidable enough that even her cousin couldn't get past two moves against her.

But she had never imagined the woman's standing was this grand. Empress dowager of Western Xia? Then didn't that make her, by extension, an imperial relative of the Western Xia court?

"Is that really true?" Li Qingluo found it hard to believe as well. In all these years she had received no word from her mother, only to learn the woman had become empress dowager of Western Xia.

"You should know by now that I never lie." Li Mochou nodded, her expression placid.

"This... it's truly... if Father were still alive to hear this news, I'm afraid he would..."

"You're wrong there too."

"What?"

"Wu Yazi is not dead." Li Mochou dropped another bombshell, unhurried. "He is at Leigu Mountain at present."

Father is alive?

Li Qingluo's eyes went wide with disbelief. "That's impossible! Mother told me with her own mouth that Father suffered qi deviation while training, his meridians ruptured, and died!"

"She lied to you." Li Mochou shook her head. "If she didn't spin that story, how could she ever have buried her own sin?"

"Sin?" Wang Yuyan froze, bewildered.

"Do you remember Ding Chunqiu?" Ignoring the girl, Li Mochou kept her gaze on Li Qingluo.

"I remember." Li Qingluo nodded, her eyes surfacing a loathing fathoms deep.

She had hated many people in this life, Duan Zhengchun and his string of lovers, for one; each of them turned her stomach, and she could have torn them limb from limb. But the one she truly abhorred was Ding Chunqiu.

Because this man's adulterous affair with her mother had been witnessed by Li Qingluo with her own eyes. And at their sleeping father's side, no less, a devastating blow to her young heart.

"Ding Chunqiu plotted with Li Qiushui to kill Wu Yazi." Li Mochou's tone was level, unhurried. "They struck from behind and pushed him off the cliff at Boundless Mountain. But Wu Yazi didn't die, he was saved by Su Xinghe."

"This, this..." Li Qingluo's pupils quaked, her whole body trembling. "Mother, she actually..."

"How could this be?" Wang Yuyan, too, was shaken to her core, her face blank with shock. "How could Grandmother do such a thing? Conspiring with an outsider to murder her own husband? Why, why on earth?!"

The perversion of human nature, the collapse of all morality?

Li Mochou dearly wanted to say exactly that, but swallowed the words as they reached her lips. "Love curdled into hate."

So that was it.

Li Qingluo drew a breath, and she believed it. Not only because she knew her little sister never lied, but because she knew her mother was exactly that kind of person: what she could not have, she destroyed.

She had discovered as much back when the three of them, father, mother, she, still lived together. And now it seemed her mother's nature was even more twisted than she had imagined.

"Little sister... do you intend to avenge Father?" Li Qingluo gradually recovered from the shock, her voice trembling as she asked.

She didn't want to see that day come. The thought of her own sister killing their own mother with her own hands was, to her, simply too cruel to bear.
