Jin Xuyan's fire blade instantly wiped out the zombies nearby. As a level eight mutant, overpowering level four and level five zombies came effortlessly to him.
Once the surrounding zombies lay reduced to ashes, a small hole became visible in the earth.
Qin Luzi examined his map and noticed the tiny dot shifting. "Captain, it's heading in the northeast direction."
At these words, Jin Xuyan swung his longsword repeatedly. In a flash, multiple fire blades hurtled northeastward.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Those fire blades eradicated the zombies around them and shattered the terrain as well. With a simple hand gesture, he drew together all the black flames to erect a firewall that pinned the little zombie right in the center.
Realizing its entrapment, the zombie attempted to burrow underground once more. Yet before it could budge, the molecules in the atmosphere began to vibrate.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Qin Luzi's strike took it by surprise, the blast slamming into it squarely. The impact launched the zombie through the air. Aware of its digging prowess, he directed his assault precisely to keep the zombie hovering aloft.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Though his blows inflicted no real harm on the zombie, they effectively blocked its retreat. While swift and nimble on solid ground, the zombie proved utterly vulnerable while airborne.
Capitalizing on the vulnerability, Jin Xuyan charged at the zombie and, in a fluid motion, his longsword cleaved it cleanly in two.
Crack!
Even in its dying instants, the zombie remained oblivious to its own destruction.
The instant the small zombie fell, the nearby zombies descended into frenzy. Devoid of directives from their leader, they began turning on one another. Only those closest to the Phantom Team persisted in their assault.
Jin Xuyan gathered the crystal cores scattered on the ground, his expression creasing with concern.
He hadn't foreseen the facility achieving level 6 zombies. Thankfully, this one's power stemmed from an artificial implant, diminishing its potency. Had it originated from a true mutant, the situation would have proven far more dire.
Following the elimination of the level 6 zombie, the Phantom Team pressed ahead with purging the remaining zombies in the vicinity. As the intensity from one flank diminished, the mutants safeguarding Sanchou Base detected a turning tide.
"Captain, it looks like the zombies in the rear have begun attacking each other."
Catching his subordinate's report, Wang He raised his binoculars to survey the battlefield.
Moments later, he gave a nod and stated, "The Phantom Team has taken down the high-level zombie. Lacking control from that superior zombie over the horde, this offensive won't last much longer."
Upon hearing this, excitement sparked in the mutants' eyes. Enduring the siege for extended periods taxed them heavily, given their energy reserves couldn't match the Phantom Team's vast capacity.
At best, they could maintain unrelenting combat for 3 to 4 hours. Beyond that, a minimum of 5 to 6 hours' recovery was necessary. Setting aside comparisons to the Phantom Team, their endurance and energy actually outshone others at equivalent levels.
Wang He unleashed a barrage of fireballs to dispatch another zombie cluster, declaring, "Hold the line, everyone, until they've eradicated all the high-level zombies."
"Understood!" the mutants chorused back.
The fierce clash endured for two additional days.
By the third day of Jiang Ziyi's presence in Luyang City, he ceaselessly felled the zombies cultivated below ground. As sunlight crested the eastern skyline, two-thirds of the zombie army had been vanquished.
In that instant, Pei Gan glared at the display screen, his eyes bloodshot. A chilling murderlust burned within his gaze.
"Fifth Elder, what do we do next?" inquired one of the attendees in the conference chamber.
Fury consumed Pei Gan upon discovering his elaborate scheme dismantled by this mysterious figure. The prior two days had been spent soothing the Matkuna General, leaving him no chance to directly oversee the incursion.
He'd believed the overwhelming zombie numbers dispatched against Sanchou Base rendered any mishaps impossible. To his astonishment, upon returning, he confronted the ruin of his life's endeavors.
Balling his fist, he smashed it down on the table and thundered, "Wipe out those mutants! I'll personally eliminate that scum!"
His underlings, hearing this outburst, stayed utterly mute. They hastily departed the room to mobilize for the counteroffensive.
Meanwhile, Jiang Ziyi detected motion on his minimap. A smirk played across his lips as he murmured, "He's finally stirred from his lair."
While anticipating Pei Gan's approach, he kept dispatching zombies. The preceding two days had nearly driven him to tedium. Slaying the ensnared zombies presented zero excitement.
Jiva voiced her bewilderment.
In response, Jiang Ziyi let out a heavy sigh and explained, "It's not as if I haven't attempted it previously."
"During my 138th lifetime, I employed that approach. The cost far surpassed what I'd imagined. I forfeited not just my body, but my wife too. Attempting it once more could cost me the final remnants of my wife and daughters."
"Across millions of years, debates have raged over the time paradox. I once believed altering the past would reshape the future. Ultimately, however many times I revisited the past, it merely spawned new timelines."
"Currently, my struggle isn't for my personal destiny, but for a timeline where my wife and children survive. To secure that, I need to uncover the apocalypse's origin and secure the cure or vaccine."
Following prolonged quiet, Jiva inquired,
