Lin Yin sensed danger looming over the remaining unscathed families as kidnappings struck the Mu and Lu households, pulling Lu Ming away to rescue Lu Yan. Wei Ji's wounded message exposed a trap orchestrated by Huo Ge, who used him to isolate and capture her. Taken to a remote mountain hideout amid spreading rumors of her death that pitted the Mu and Lu families against each other, Lin Yin escaped her bonds but confronted Huo Ge in a gunpoint standoff, her reinforcements arriving just in time.

As Huo Ge uttered those words, his subordinates unleashed a barrage of gunfire toward Lin Yin.

Lin Yin never saw this coming from Huo Ge. She swiftly dropped low and took shelter in the nearby bushes alongside her team.

Gunfire echoed relentlessly through the mountains. Yue Shan, hurrying to the scene, dashed anxiously toward the source of the shots.

Upon nearing the action, she spotted Huo Ge falling back, clearly overwhelmed by superior numbers.

Without hesitation, Yue Shan lunged forward with every ounce of her strength to shield Huo Ge as someone took aim at him.

Huo Ge, convinced his end had come, stared in shock at Old Madam Huo who had thrown herself in front. He instinctively cried out, “Grandma!”

Both factions halted firing at once.

Lin Yin hadn't anticipated Yue Shan's arrival here.

Yue Shan pressed a hand to the bleeding gash on her belly and gently touched Huo Ge's dazed face, her expression full of gratitude. She smiled faintly and said, “Good thing it missed you.”

Huo Ge appeared stunned. Then, rejecting the life-saving favor, he sneered, “Wrong person to save. Truth is, I'm not your grandson.”

Huo Ge figured Yue Shan would at least show surprise, yet she simply shut her eyes and replied, “Xiao Ge, Grandma may be getting on in years, but she's not senile. I ran a paternity test when you came back. Think the Huo family elders would accept you otherwise?”

Huo Ge stood frozen in shock. Shaking his head in denial, he soon scooped up Old Madam Huo and hurried down the mountain.

Lin Yin trailed after them without pause.

Lin Yin's face lit up with astonishment as she watched Huo Ge clutch the paternity report, eyes bulging in utter disbelief.

If Huo Ge truly belonged to the Huo family, why did he believe otherwise?

Perhaps meddling had tampered with Huo Ge's childhood memories?

This realization hit her, making everything suddenly click into place.

Though Old Madam Huo was rescued, her advanced age and severe blood loss left her awakening uncertain.

Gazing at Grandma on the hospital bed, Huo Ge felt a strange bitterness swell in his chest.

“I think someone's messed with your memories. My second brother knows a lot about this. Want to try getting it fixed?” Lin Yin suggested from nearby.

Huo Ge lifted his gaze, eyes bloodshot. The pent-up rage in them exploded forth. “Lin Yin, you murdered my Grandma!”

A gunshot rang out, staining Lin Yin's chest crimson as she crumpled slowly to the floor.

Upon Lin Yin's body arriving at the Mu family home, Ye Wen collapsed in sobs.

Hostility erupted between the Mu and Lu families.

Even Lu Yan, eager for a glimpse of Lin Yin, got thrashed by the Mu household.

Lu Yan, eyes puffy from weeping, stormed to Lu Zheng and pounded on the door while hurling curses.

Wei Ji sat numbly in the room and murmured in disbelief, “Auntie Li, is Yinyin truly gone?”

Auntie Li shot Wei Ji a cold look. “Daughter of our foe. Her death just settles the score with your late parents.”

Wei Ji bowed his head and whispered, “But she died protecting me. I exploited her goodwill to cause her end!”

Aunt Li fixed Wei Ji with an icy glare and cautioned, “No room for mercy. Fail Master Fu's scheme, and you'll pay dearly.”

Wei Ji remained seated in a stupor for ages before rising and heading to the Huo residence.

Standing by Huo Ge, Wei Ji asked tonelessly in a hushed voice, “Did Yinyin say anything before dying? Was she furious?”

Wei Ji dreaded Lin Yin's resentment. His actions had led to her demise.

Huo Ge merely glanced up at Wei Ji with eerie calm. “What could she say? Sparing her years back gave her extra time. She went content, naturally.”

Wei Ji's brow furrowed. “Years back? Explain that.”

Huo Ge scoffed. “Years ago, Master Fu ordered me to snatch a kid named Bean Bao from the slums and bring her to Country D. Ran into Lin Yin instead. Nearly died there. Only the kid's folks showing up stopped me from finishing her off.”

Wei Ji's eyes widened as he gaped at Huo Ge. “You said the kid was Bean Bao?”

Huo Ge eyed Wei Ji puzzledly and confirmed, “Yeah!”

Wei Ji collapsed to the floor.

Suddenly, it dawned on him why Lin Yin, who started off cool toward him, warmed up one day out of nowhere.

He got why she'd once asked him to call her sister.

Wasn't his sister supposed to have died back then? What's going on?

Tears flooded Wei Ji's eyes in an instant. Huo Ge watched, utterly confused.

Wei Ji lurched out from the Huo family’s doorway. Dizziness struck him under the weight of psychological strain, tangled emotions, and that piercing stare. Moments later, he crumpled to the ground.
