~5 minute read · 1,232 words

Beneath Yanmen Pass.

From dawn till the sun blazed high, Xiao Mo kept slaughtering foes.

Xiao Mo had lost track of precisely how many lives he'd taken.

He couldn't recall the exact number of times his long spear had lashed out.

He had no memory of how many comrades fell beside him, yet Xiao Mo understood retreat was not an option.

All that remained was to surge ahead and slay!

The moment Xiao Mo's spear thrust hurled another Zhei Kingdom soldier from his mount, he witnessed a Northern Frontier warrior cleaved to the dirt.

Yet another blade hacked down from the front. But Xiao Mo's long spear had already skewered the attacking enemy's chest.

"Can you still stand up?" Xiao Mo shoved the foe's corpse aside with a kick and asked the soldier.

"I-I still can!" The warrior called Chen Dong staggered to his feet. His eyes burned red, his form caked in grimy blood, murderous aura radiating fiercely. He'd evidently hacked away until bloodlust consumed him, but as Chen Dong reached for the long blade nearby, his right hand—shaking after two and a half hours of relentless swings—slipped and failed to seize it.

The long blade dropped to the ground.

After Xiao Mo unleashed a spear qi strike to fell several charging Zhei soldiers, he dismounted, snatched up the long blade, and fitted it into Chen Dong's grasp.

Silent, Xiao Mo remounted and pressed onward into the fray, slaying more enemies.

As he watched General Xiao's figure relentlessly storming ahead amid the chaos, Chen Dong snapped alert, ripped strips from his garb, bound the long blade fast to his palm, and charged after the General to kill!

After noon passed, Xiao Mo lifted his gaze to the fierce sun dominating the sky.

In just half an hour more, it would mark exactly thirty days of holding Yanmen Pass, yet the Northern Frontier army's main host had yet to appear.

Furthermore, with Northern Frontier troops dropping one by one into bloody pools, the gains from their earlier breakout were vanishing, their lines steadily driven back.

By now, the Zhei Kingdom forces stood less than three li from Yanmen Pass.

Of the five thousand Snow-Treading Dragon Cavalry that rode out alongside Xiao Mo, merely five hundred endured.

As for surviving infantry scattered across the field, Xiao Mo couldn't even guess their numbers, much less rally them amid the disarray.

Xiao Mo pierced Guo Xin's tactical ploy: an attempt to encircle him and his remaining five hundred Snow-Treading Dragon Cavalry once more. Yet even discerning the enemy's scheme, he couldn't break free as before—not with Yanmen Pass looming close behind.

Before them roared an endless enemy tide.

Retreat was utterly impossible.

"General, let us guard you and force a breakout!" Beside Xiao Mo, Zhao Guang urged from his Snow-Treading Horse in a grave tone.

"Brother Mo, you mustn't perish. Your genius demands you survive to avenge us later!" Xiao Gui pleaded too, but Xiao Mo merely shook his head calmly and replied, "Can't break through, and I won't leave either."

"..." The General's steady declaration of their doom plunged all hearts into despair.

Indeed.

Ahead lay the Zhei Kingdom's hundreds of thousands strong.

Behind, southern armies clashed fiercely with Northern Frontier forces, too entangled to assault the walls—but still hemming them in tightly. Bursting from the south gate would prove just as grueling.

Their pleas to shield General Xiao stemmed only from a final, desperate hope before the end...

"Mortals all must die. The hour of wei approaches; thirty days held firm. At minimum, we haven't shamed Qin Kingdom or the Northern Frontier's kin and elders. Battling foes in array with you these days marks this Xiao's supreme honor in life!"

"General..." Zhao Guang clenched the reins, words catching in his throat.

"Xiao Mo, it's finished."

Guo Xin reined in before his ranks, fixing his gaze on Xiao Mo.

"Xiao Mo, you possess true general's talent, fully matching your fame. One final offer: yield to me, serve as my deputy. When we strike back at Qin Kingdom, you'll earn glory, titles, and lands! Far superior to perishing here, no?"

"General Guo's generosity overwhelms, but no thanks needed."

Xiao Mo grinned, wheeled to face his five hundred cavalry, and bellowed, "Who dares die with me!"

Dashing tears from his eyes, Zhao Guang thrust his long spear aloft. "I dare die with the General!"

"I dare die with the General!"

"I dare die with the General!"

"I dare die with the General!"

Five hundred voices thundered in unison, shaking earth and heavens, startling Zhei warhorses into rearward steps and chilling soldiers' blood.

"Where stand the Snow-Treading Dragon Cavalry!" Xiao Mo clutched his long spear firm.

The five hundred roared, "All present!"

"Charge and slaughter with me!"

"Kill!"

Xiao Mo whipped his mount forward. His five hundred Snow-Treading Dragon Cavalry thundered after.

"Then perish!" Guo Xin's eyes flashed coldly. "Annihilate them!"

At Guo Xin's order, Zhei Kingdom troops swept forth like a tidal wave, intent on swallowing Xiao Mo's band whole.

From the battlements, Lian Li observed it all. Unnoticed, her fingers closed around a long spear.

As the armies neared collision and Lian Li moved to descend the wall, tremors shook the ramparts beneath her feet.

Instantly, tens of thousands of Snow-Treading Dragon Cavalry burst from Yanmen Pass's north gate, plunging into the melee.

"Guo Xin, you bastard, your grandpa's arrived!"

One-eyed General Huang barreled into enemy lines. His long blade swept wide, hurling dozens airborne.

"Archers! Loose!"

From the walls, Fang Weiming's command unleashed rune-etched arrows at Zhei's core and rear. Explosions ripped through their ranks nonstop.

"Nephew, take a breather. Uncle Zhang handles the rest!"

Swarthy Zhang Kui, wielding his zhang-eight serpent spear, vaulted straight off the walls, rampaging into Zhei formations like a savage tiger.

Then a piercing screech echoed through the skies.

With the southern flight ban array broken, a Vermillion Bird blazed across the heavens. True flames trailed its path, as if to set the firmament alight—outshining even the midday sun.

The Vermillion Bird spewed fire, igniting fields that raced toward Zhei troops.

"Vermillion Bird clan dares meddle in human wars?!" Guo Xin bellowed at it, but the bird merely glanced dismissively, ignoring him.

After one skyward loop, the Vermillion Bird dove low, spewing flames onward.

Simultaneously, a girl in pale pink gown leaped from its back, dashing toward Xiao Mo.

Seeing the girl hike her skirts and sprint his way, Xiao Mo's face stiffened in shock.

As she drew near, Xiao Mo recovered, dismounted, and stared astonished. "Siyao, how did you—"

Those five words "how did you come" remained unsaid.

The girl flung herself forward, embracing Xiao Mo tightly.

Tears traced from her eyes down her cheeks, splattering onto Xiao Mo's armor, blending with dirt and gore as they trickled earthward.

"Fool!"

"Fool!"

"Fool!"

Her tears poured like a storm. Sobbing, she hammered Xiao Mo's chest.

"Why are you so stubborn?

Do you know you could have died?

Why didn't you surrender?"
