Lith and Meng Yuexin navigated a muddy, root-filled prison, guided by a mysterious whistle. They encountered several grotesque, eyeless creatures that were inexplicably prevented from crossing an invisible barrier surrounding Lith. As more creatures appeared, surrounding them from all sides, Lith realized they were on a designated path, with the monsters forbidden to enter. The whistle beckoned them deeper into the prison, and the creatures lowered their heads in unison.

A thin veil of mist covered the world of gray and darkness as Lith entered the next layer.

Hanging upside down were colossal structures of stony mountains, rugged, and barely with any flora.

"Where are we even supposed to go from here?" Meng Yuexin clicked her tongue. "This prison keeps getting absurd."

Lith nodded lightly at her comment. Though, unlike her, he could hear the whistle again.

It guided him to a mountain spaced a few hundred meters apart from the one he stood upon.

Looking below, the peaks of the mountains reached into endless darkness.

Feeling his back, Lith felt a slight tingle as his wings erupted.

He held Meng Yuexin by the waist, inciting a small gasp from her, and flew away.

"Aaaa..." Meng Yuexin covered her face, trying not to look down.

They were flying on empty space, moving toward another rugged mountain.

"This layer hates humans or what!?" Meng Yuexin questioned.

No normal human could go from one point to another. They needed some form of flying but they couldn’t even use their cultivation as it was sealed.

Lith stayed silent on the matter. This prison belonged to vampires so naturally, they wouldn’t care for a human’s comfort.

Fuuuuuuuuuu~

The whistle slowly guided Lith to the deeper mountainous areas.

It stopped whistling when Lith stopped before a cave.

Inscriptions in formal writing were etched beside it on polished stone.

Grave of the Seventh Ancestor.

A kind father.

A great warrior.

A benevolent warden.

Meng Yuexin stared at the writing and asked, "Why is there no name written?"

Lith shrugged lightly and asked, "You’ve lived longer than me. Shouldn’t you know better?"

Meng Yuexin’s eyes twitched. "Has nobody taught you to not mention the age of a lady?"

Lith shook his hand and walked inside the cave. "There’s no time for jokes, young lady."

"Call me big sister Yue!" Meng Yuexin exclaimed as she followed behind, not giving in to Lith’s sarcastic remarks.

The cave was dark but not an issue for Lith. He could see everything clearly.

Meng Yuexin couldn’t. She held Lith’s sleeve while following closely behind. She couldn’t feel the Fire or Light element, making it impossible for her to have any illumination.

Walking through a narrow passage, the two eventually reached a chamber illuminated in a soft blue seeping from the top.

Looking up, Lith and Meng Yuexin saw water instead of the ceiling.

The light was concentrated more in the middle of the chamber, highlighting the grave that rested here.

Colorful flowers grew beside the grave without any signs of withering.

Stepping towards it, Lith found a strange stir in his bloodline, making him stop.

"What’s wrong?" Meng Yuexin asked.

"Can you walk towards the grave?"

"I can. Why?" Meng Yuexin said as she walked closer to the tombstone lying near the grave.

’Another bloodline specific thing?’ Lith wondered and took another step closer.

The resonance was stronger. Another step ahead and he knew something would trigger.

Lith looked at Meng Yuexin and said, "Don’t panic if something happens and keep a watch over my body."

Meng Yuexin frowned and got closer to Lith.

"What’s going to happen?"

"Let me find out." Lith said and took another step ahead.

A ticklish feeling spread all over his body, following which was a change in his body’s color.

It turned bluish-purple as blood began flowing in reverse.

Lith let out a pained groan but took another step ahead regardless.

His eyes rolled back.

His vision darkened.

Thud!

His body fell forward but got caught in Meng Yuexin’s soft embrace.

She looked at him with concern all over her face, unaware of what exactly was happening.

Lith soon stopped breathing.

His body stayed fixed in the state he fell on Meng Yuexin even after she pulled back, as if gravity didn’t work.

A cold breeze brushed against her but the flowers beside the grave did not sway.

...

After a flash of darkness, Lith found himself in a world of black and grey.

It was a clearing in the middle of a forest.

A weathered stone cross was placed before a coffin upon which sat a man, staring down at Lith with his bright crimson eyes.

A weak-willed person would’ve soiled their pants upon such a sight.

Lith merely gazed back at the man, not moving an inch.

After glancing for a few seconds, the man finally spoke.

"You possess the Asura and Evure bloodline. Strangely, both of them are much stronger than their original counterparts."

The man jumped from the cross and landed on the coffin.

He stared at the distant grey skies while adjusting his hat.

"It matters not in the grand scheme of things. You possess the Evure God Clan’s bloodline and it is enough to get my inheritance. The question now is..."

The man turned his face to the side, glancing at Lith.

"...do you wish to bear the burden of my inheritance? Or do you wish to leave with the prison key?"

Lith’s face was devoid of any expression as he said, "First things first... what are we doing in the Astral World?"

"Oh?" The man turned around with an interested look on his face. "You know of the Astral World?"

"Who doesn’t?" Lith felt it was common knowledge, after all he had been pulled into it multiple times and saw many people there.

The man’s expression turned into one of confusion, followed by one of surprise as he asked, "Did the clan figure out methods to freely enter and exit the Astral World?"

Lith raised his eyebrows in amusement.

This was news to him.

He and the other Chosen Ones could freely traverse in the Astral World. How is it that the rest couldn’t?

Lith didn’t have much interaction with the Astral World so it was in the back of his mind. He only remembered it when it was tribulation time or if some Chosen One contacted him.

"Is the Astral World important?" Lith asked, not answering the man’s question.

The man’s expression turned one of frown as he asked, "Do you not know?"

Lith merely shrugged. "If you don’t want to answer, then don’t."

The man adjusted his hat. "That’s quite the way to talk to your ancestor, boy."

Lith shook his head and said, "Don’t bother with the familial ties. You are not my ancestor."

Lith did not consider anyone except his grandmother as family from the Evure God Clan.

The enmity ran too deep to consider them as such.

The man glanced at Lith once, then turned around to stare at the distant grey skies again.

"To have found a descendant that doesn’t consider me his ancestor is quite ironic. But it matters not, for I am but the last will of my original self."

The man adjusted his hat again and said, "Child from outside, I’ll repeat it again. Do you wish to bear the burden of my inheritance? Or do you wish to leave with the prison key?"

Lith looked at him.

"What’s the difference?"

The man reached into his coat and tossed something toward him.

Lith caught it.

It was a rusted iron key.

"One lets you leave immediately."

The man continued to gaze at the distant grey skies.

"The other lets you understand why this prison was never meant to be opened."

Lith frowned as he stared at the key.

Something did not feel right.

As if knowing what his reaction was, the ancestor’s amused chuckle resounded in Lith’s ears.

"Did you truly believe the prison’s greatest secret would be difficult to find?"

The ancestor turned around.

"The key was never the challenge."

The ancestor stared at Lith.

"Finding it proves you possess the bloodline."

"What you choose to do with it will determine whether you deserve my inheritance."
