Ye Yunqi caught up to Ye Fei as he completed his first circuit. Observing his sweat-drenched state, she asked with visible anxiety, "Brother, are you doing okay? I can talk to the teacher so you can take a break from running."
Ye Fei responded with a shake of his head, saying, "I’m alright, I can keep this up. I actually feel like this is helping my body."
"Fine, but stop immediately if you can't handle it. Everyone is aware of your physical condition, so no one will judge you. Just don't overdo it!" Ye Yunqi cautioned. Once she saw Ye Fei nod, she accelerated ahead. As the most athletic student in their class, she refused to let anyone overtake her.
By the time a lap and a half were completed, Ye Fei’s sight began to fail him. Every breath felt like inhaling fire; the air was scorching and seemed to provide no relief. No matter how deeply he gasped, the oxygen never felt sufficient.
"Ye Fei, are you alright?" A melodious voice suddenly cut through his mental fog, bringing a wave of clarity. Turning his head, he found Lin Ling keeping pace with him, her face full of concern.
Astonished that Lin Ling had already lapped him, Ye Fei forced a smile and replied, "I'm okay. This training is beneficial. I might actually get stronger from this."
Lin Ling offered a tender smile but remained silent, merely slowing her pace to match his instead of pulling ahead.
"Ling, you should go faster and not wait for me. You'll be punished if you end up in the bottom ten," Ye Fei pressured her, unwilling to let her suffer on his account.
Lin Ling simply shook her head in refusal. "I’m exhausted too. Let’s just take it slow together."
Knowing her stubborn nature, Ye Fei realized he couldn't change her mind once it was set. Consequently, he pushed himself to run faster, determined to keep her out of the bottom ten rankings.
After a short distance, Lin Ling called his name again. When he looked over, he saw her face flushed—not from the physical exertion, but from bashfulness. Confused, he asked, "What is it?"
"Are you pushing yourself this hard for my sake?" Lin Ling’s blush deepened significantly.
Ye Fei let out a small laugh. "You could say that, though I'm doing it for myself too. Why the sudden question?"
Her face turning bright red, Lin Ling hesitated before whispering, "You mentioned yesterday... that you were worried about whether your body could satisfy me in the future."
Deeply touched by her words, Ye Fei felt a surge of emotion. "You’re such a wonderful girl, always thinking of me. I’m fine, Ling. Please don’t cry. Seeing your tears hurts more than running three extra laps ever could."
Wiping her eyes, Lin Ling replied, "Alright, I’ll stop crying. But please stop running now, okay? I’ll go speak with the teacher for you."
"I want to test my limits a little longer for now," Ye Fei said with a smile. "Don’t worry. I’ll stop if I truly can’t go on. I have no intention of breaking my body. I want to be with a perfect wife like you for many, many years."
"Who said I want you around for that long?" Lin Ling blushed, playfully spat toward him, and continued to run at his side, refusing to leave him behind.
Bolstered by Lin Ling’s company, Ye Fei felt a second wind and finished his second lap with less fatigue. Although Lin Ling had technically finished her third lap, she stayed by his side. Having already finished her own run, Ye Yunqi watched from a distance, choosing not to interfere when she saw how Lin Ling was supporting her brother.
As she delegated tasks to the students who had finished, Tang Rou watched Ye Fei and Lin Ling with rising irritation. While the rest of the class labored, these two appeared to be on a romantic stroll, chatting away as if they had no respect for her authority as their teacher.
Tang Rou had a long-standing disdain for high school romances, viewing them as nothing but a hindrance to academic success. Seeing the intimacy between Ye Fei and Lin Ling while they ran grated on her nerves. Despite their attractive appearances, she found their conduct repulsive and vowed to discipline them shortly.
With Lin Ling’s help, Ye Fei finally crossed the finish line for his third lap, clocking a faster time than expected. However, the effort left him on the brink of collapse, and he had to lean on Lin Ling to stay upright. He was so saturated with sweat it looked as though he had been caught in a storm.
Tang Rou summoned ten students, including the pair. She addressed the other eight first: "All of you, go run one additional lap right now." Then, her cold gaze landed on Ye Fei and Lin Ling. "As for you two, you will both run three extra laps!"
"Teacher, I need to discuss something with you," Lin Ling interjected, fearing that more running would cause Ye Fei to collapse. She tried to explain his health situation to Tang Rou.
"Whatever you have to say can wait until the laps are finished!" Tang Rou snapped, her brow furrowed. In her mind, these two were not only flaunting their relationship but were now being openly defiant.
Finally regaining enough breath to speak, Ye Fei asked, "Teacher, didn't you state that only the very last person would face three extra laps? Why is she being punished? She already finished four laps, and it was obvious that she only ended up in the bottom ten because she was slowing down for me."
"So you admit you were a burden to someone else?" Tang Rou sneered. "Then why weren't you running seriously? It's too late for excuses. She has to run those three laps specifically because of you!"
