As soon as the car halted before the Bai family mansion's grand gates, Shen Ji Yun exited first. He proceeded to the passenger side, swung the door open, and Luo Yan emerged.
"Brother Ji Yun, I already told you, it wasn't necessary for you to get out," Luo Yan expressed with a sense of helplessness.
"And you know full well I wouldn't simply drive away the moment you stepped out," Shen Ji Yun retorted. "So, I might as well exit and ensure you safely enter."
"Or perhaps..." Luo Yan began, playfully toying with Shen Ji Yun's fingers. "You're just seeking a pretext to prolong our time together."
Shen Ji Yun offered a smile. "I wouldn't dream of denying that."
Luo Yan surveyed his surroundings. The lampposts provided adequate illumination, yet it was unlikely anyone would be traversing the grounds at this late hour. His aunt and uncle were presumably fast asleep. With no observers present, their moment would remain private. Thus, he encircled Shen Ji Yun's waist with his arms, resting his head against his chest.
"Brother Ji Yun, please make an early arrival at the party tomorrow," he requested. "That way, I can present your gift to you, and you can wear it."
"Certainly."
Luo Yan tilted his head upwards. "Good night, Brother Ji Yun."
Shen Ji Yun gazed down at Luo Yan. Even in the subdued light, the exquisite beauty of his features was apparent. He raised his hands, gently cradling Luo Yan's cheeks. He leaned in, intending a brief kiss. However, a strong hand seized his arm, yanking him forcefully away from Luo Yan. The sudden pull caught him completely off guard. Unable to regain his balance, he almost toppled backward.
"What do you think you are doing?"
The instant Shen Ji Yun recognized that familiar voice, his entire physique stiffened. No. This couldn't be happening. He couldn't be so profoundly unlucky. The one person who absolutely should not witness them in such a situation had, by some twist of fate, caught them. Yet, as he turned his head and beheld Uncle Wei Tian standing there, his countenance dark with sheer fury, Shen Ji Yun felt a sickening plunge in his stomach. This was dire. This was a truly catastrophic turn of events. His mind went completely blank. He was incapable of thought, incapable of movement. All he could manage was to stand rooted to the spot, his heart hammering with such ferocity he was convinced its reverberations could be heard by everyone present.
The raw anger etched on Uncle Wei Tian's face seemed to waver. He fixed his gaze upon Shen Ji Yun, and a subtle shift occurred in his expression. His brow knitted together. His lips parted slightly. It was as if he were truly seeing Shen Ji Yun for the very first time. The rigid set of his jaw relaxed, supplanted by something akin to disbelief. Shock. Confusion. He blinked, once, then twice, as if struggling to process the sight before him.
"Ji Yun?" Uncle Wei Tian inquired, his tone laced with a desperate hope that Shen Ji Yun would deny his identity. But how could Shen Ji Yun possibly disavow himself? Despite a fleeting temptation to feign ignorance, he understood the necessity of confronting this reality head-on.
"U-Uncle Wei Tian," Shen Ji Yun managed to reply, the words escaping his lips with considerable difficulty.
Uncle Wei Tian's initial shock and confusion gradually ebbed, replaced once more by mounting anger. He directed his gaze at Shen Ji Yun, then shifted it to Luo Yan, and finally returned his focus to Shen Ji Yun. With each flicker of his eyes, the anger contorting his features intensified. His jaw clenched ominously. His eyes narrowed. Though no words were uttered, his expression conveyed a powerful and unequivocal message.
Shen Ji Yun braced himself, anticipating an explosive outburst from Uncle Wei Tian. However, before the inevitable could transpire, Luo Yan swiftly moved forward, positioning himself directly between his father and Shen Ji Yun.
"Dad, please, try to remain calm," Luo Yan pleaded. "Whatever questions you may have, we can address them once we are inside."
Uncle Wei Tian observed Luo Yan for a prolonged moment. Subsequently, he appeared to suppress his fury, mentally shoving it away into some unseen recess. He turned and strode towards the mansion gates. "Get inside. Both of you."
A soft sigh of relief escaped Luo Yan as he watched his father disappear through the gates. A sudden weakness permeated his legs, and his hands grew unnervingly cold. For a harrowing moment back there, observing his father's visage, he had been convinced that an calamitous event was imminent. His heart had nearly ceased its beating. And to think, his father had chosen that precise, most inopportune moment to witness their intimacy, just as Shen Ji Yun was about to bestow a kiss upon him. He pressed a hand against his chest, attempting to regain his composure.
Thankfully, he had managed to placate his father and contain his escalating rage. Had he not intervened at that critical juncture, Luo Yan feared his father might have actually resorted to physical violence against Shen Ji Yun.
Luo Yan cast a glance towards his boyfriend. Shen Ji Yun remained utterly stationary, frozen as if by an unseen force. A wave of empathy washed over Luo Yan. He could only speculate about the turmoil raging within Shen Ji Yun's mind at this juncture. Yet, he recognized Shen Ji Yun's palpable fear and deep-seated worry, mirroring his own internal state. If anything, Shen Ji Yun was likely experiencing these emotions with even greater intensity.
As if to confirm this observation, Shen Ji Yun turned towards him. His azure eyes were wide with apprehension, his face appearing pale beneath the dim illumination. He looked at Luo Yan as if desperately seeking something — a sliver of reassurance, a tangible sign that this dire situation was not as catastrophic as it seemed. Luo Yan extended his hand, gently taking Shen Ji Yun's and giving it a reassuring squeeze.
"Come on. Let's go inside," he said quietly. "It's going to be alright."
At least, he hoped so.

Luo Yan was seated within his uncle's study. He occupied one extremity of a long couch, while Shen Ji Yun was positioned at the opposing end. An initial attempt to sit closer was met with a stern gaze from his father, prompting a regrettable separation. Now, his father paced relentlessly before them, waves of palpable anger emanating from him.
"When did this begin?" his father finally inquired after a prolonged, stifling silence. He ceased his pacing, fixing his gaze upon both of them. "And do not dare to deceive me or claim that what I witnessed was merely some novel greeting exchanged between youths. I demand the unvarnished truth." He swallowed with difficulty, his jaw tightly clenched. "Just be forthright with me."
