LUO YAN straightened his tie, his gaze meeting his reflection in the looking glass. Staring back was a man in his early twenties, boasting handsome features. He lifted the corner of his mouth; a simple smile transformed his aura from boy-next-door charm to sophisticated elegance.

[You truly are handsome, aren't you?]

Grabbing his bag, he surveyed the four-bedroom dormitory, his home for the last four years, yet devoid of any sentimental value. To him, it was merely a place to rest.

His three roommates had already moved out post-graduation. He was the sole occupant. University regulations stipulated vacating the dormitory within three days of graduation. However, Luo Yan had secured an extension of ten days. His exceptional academic performance, coupled with the warm, gentle persona he had maintained for four years and his striking looks, facilitated the approval of his request. Furthermore, other students in similar situations remained in the dormitory.

Today marked his final departure. The company he would soon join offered employee housing, and he was scheduled to receive his apartment key today. Thus, after his first day on the job, he could finally relocate. His possessions were minimal, fitting into just three boxes, a testament to his simple lifestyle. A delivery service had already been arranged to transport his belongings to the company-provided apartment building.

Luo Yan slipped on his shoes and exited the room.

Three months prior to his graduation, Luo Yan had already accepted an offer from a renowned gaming company. This was hardly surprising, given his top-ranking position in the Computer Science Department. He accepted without hesitation, harboring a passion for gaming and an interest in game development, making a career in the gaming industry his ultimate ambition. He desired to work in a field he genuinely loved.

He had spent his life making compromises. But now, with graduation and a stable job, those compromises were no longer necessary.

Luo Yan was an orphan. His parents perished in a car accident when he was four. They were ordinary office workers, not affiliated with any prominent family. His recollections of that period were hazy, yet he still recalled his father's hearty laughter and his mother's tender embrace. Though they may not have lived in a grand estate, his parents had loved him wholeheartedly. Their deaths irrevocably altered his life.

None of his relatives offered him refuge; some even bickered over his parents' modest possessions. Consequently, Luo Yan was placed in an orphanage. While not explicitly harsh, the orphanage environment offered little comfort. Everything felt foreign and overwhelming. He was consumed by grief, fear, and sadness. As the new child, he endured relentless bullying, his food rations stolen, and his chores foisted upon him. He could only lower his head, endure, and weep.

However, he soon realized that tears offered no solace. Thus, he adapted. He learned to smile when he felt none, to praise others insincerely, and to feign foolishness when he felt none. His life in the orphanage improved significantly thereafter, culminating in his adoption at age ten.

Luo Yan vigorously shook his head, refusing to dwell on that somber past.

Merely three months after his adoption, he found himself back in a different orphanage. This time, Luo Yan resolved to avoid future adoptions altogether. This proved achievable; he simply ensured everyone at the orphanage, from the children to the adults, particularly the director, held him in high regard. The director, a middle-aged woman without a husband or children, was easily charmed by Luo Yan, who soon became her nominal son.

He remained at the orphanage until he turned eighteen. His performance on the college entrance examination was outstanding, not merely good, but among the nation's top ten scores. He chose T University, the country's premier institution, recognizing that graduating from such a university would significantly enhance his career prospects.

Luo Yan was not a prodigy; he was simply a diligent worker. His stellar grades were the direct result of his relentless effort. At times, he would study until dawn, viewing arduous study as his sole path to upward mobility, his only means of escaping the societal bottom rung and achieving something in life.

Now, his perseverance had yielded its rewards. Luo Yan was en route to his first day of work, viewing this as the initial step toward a brighter future, a future he knew would be substantially improved.

The moment Luo Yan exited the dormitory structure, a piercing shriek echoed from overhead. As his gaze shot upwards, a potted plant was observed hurtling towards him with considerable velocity. [Son of a b*tch.] That fleeting realization was his final coherent thought before the planter made violent contact with his visage, plunging his world into darkness.
