Dong Yujie initially dismissed Jiang Huaizhou's statement about not sleeping well as an exaggeration.
However, Dong Yujie came to understand that their relationship would only feel truly solid after they officially registered their marriage.
"That's wonderful. Once you register your marriage, we, along with your mother, can all have a celebratory meal together," Mr. Jiang proposed.
Since their divorce, the four of them had not shared a meal collectively.
He had, in a way, become in-laws with Mrs. Dong.
Mr. Jiang harbored a complex mix of emotions about this development.
"Since you two have made up your minds, you should proceed with registering your marriage as soon as possible. Prolonged delays could introduce numerous complications," Mr. Jiang advised.
Consequently, the discussion turned to selecting a date for their marriage registration.
"Why not do it tomorrow?" Mr. Jiang suggested. "You two can register your marriage, and everyone can finally feel at ease."
"That's perfect. Tomorrow is Mother's Day, so we can also celebrate it," Mr. Jiang added.
"Alright," Jiang Huaizhou agreed, then turned to Dong Yujie, "What are your thoughts?"
"I believe tomorrow would be an excellent day. It's the 10th of May, a date that sounds auspicious. Plus, we won't have to worry about forgetting it," Dong Yujie replied.
The pronunciation of the 10th of May in Chinese bore a resemblance to the phrase 'I want you'.
"When we have children, this date will signify more than just our anniversary," Jiang Huaizhou remarked, his eyes on Dong Yujie.
Dong Yujie considered his words and concurred that it was indeed a fitting date.
With their decision made, they resolved to register their marriage. They departed from Mr. Jiang's residence that very evening and returned to Mrs. Dong's home.
After all, the registration of their marriage was a significant milestone, one that required informing Mrs. Dong in advance.
Upon their return, they shared the news with Mrs. Dong, who was naturally overjoyed for them.
"Mom, Dad suggested we have a meal together after Dong Yujie and I register our marriage," Jiang Huaizhou informed her. "Tomorrow is also Mother's Day, so registering our marriage and celebrating it will bring double the joy."
"That sounds wonderful," Mrs. Dong responded with a smile.
Jiang Huaizhou then inquired, "Shall we go to register our marriage first thing tomorrow morning?"
Mrs. Dong and Dong Yujie readily agreed without hesitation.
"Um..." Jiang Huaizhou began, "Since we'll be leaving early tomorrow, perhaps I should stay here tonight?"
"It would be more convenient to leave together with Yujie tomorrow morning if I stay," Jiang Huaizhou explained.
Mrs. Dong and Dong Yujie exchanged knowing glances, understanding he was simply looking for an excuse to spend another night.
Mrs. Dong chuckled warmly, "Of course."
And so, Jiang Huaizhou stayed overnight once more.
The following morning, the couple departed early to register their marriage.
It was only when they held their official marriage certificates in their hands...
That the sense of security finally settled upon both of them.
That day marked both Mother's Day and their marriage registration. In celebration, Jiang Huaizhou had reserved a private room at Sheng Yue restaurant.
He coordinated a meeting time with both Mr. Jiang and Mrs. Dong before heading out to pick them up.
The four of them arrived at Sheng Yue. After parking the car, they proceeded to enter the establishment.
They entered the main dining area of Sheng Yue, where Jiang Huaizhou had booked their private room.
This necessitated a walk down the corridor towards their designated private space.
As they ambled along the hallway, a voice suddenly called out, "Jiang Huaizhou!"
The voice held a distinct familiarity.
Dong Yujie also recognized the sound of the voice.
Indeed.
The person who had addressed Jiang Huaizhou was Qu Mengyu.
Dong Yujie had not anticipated Qu Mengyu's level of persistence.
Mrs. Dong and Mr. Jiang paused, looking over with puzzled expressions.
They then observed Qu Mengyu approaching, accompanied by her parents.
It seemed Qu Mengyu and her family were also there to celebrate Mother's Day.
Upon seeing Jiang Huaizhou, Qu Mengyu's parents displayed clear signs of anger.
It was evident they had learned of Jiang Huaizhou's rejection of Qu Mengyu.
Qu Mengyu took the lead, casting a swift, sharp glance at Dong Yujie.
Her expression conveyed an unmistakable look of disdain.
Jiang Huaizhou's brow furrowed in displeasure, and Mrs. Dong instinctively moved to shield Dong Yujie behind her.
However, Dong Yujie did not retreat. Instead, she subtly positioned herself to protect Mrs. Dong.
Qu Mengyu drew nearer, her gaze sweeping over Dong Yujie with a patronizing air.
Jiang Huaizhou's barely contained anger flared, and he was about to speak.
Unexpectedly, Qu Mengyu cut in, asking, "Jiang Huaizhou, did you claim she is your girlfriend?"
"Not anymore," Jiang Huaizhou replied, his voice laced with coldness.
Qu Mengyu appeared taken aback. She then turned her attention towards Dong Yujie.
Was their intention today to discuss a breakup? She pondered.
Who would bring their entire family along when ending a relationship? she wondered.
Were they perhaps here to negotiate a breakup settlement?
A cold smile touched Qu Mengyu's lips as she said, "No wonder. She used to be involved with Lu Qiyuan. She'd date an older man for money, wouldn't she? What is it today? Is she here to discuss breakup fees?"
Dong Yujie's smile faltered, her expression freezing instantly before her face drained of all color.
Mr. Jiang stepped forward protectively, placing himself between Dong Yujie and Qu Mengyu.
Jiang Huaizhou tightened his lips, stating firmly, "Stop spewing utter falsehoods, or I shall take legal action against you for defamation! To begin with, you have identified the wrong individual. Secondly, we are not in the process of a breakup. I informed you that she is not my girlfriend because we are, in fact, now husband and wife. It is quite clear that she is no longer merely my girlfriend."
Qu Mengyu's countenance underwent a dramatic shift. "That is utterly impossible!"
"What makes it impossible? We have been in a committed relationship for many years. Due to work commitments, she was away for an entire year. Now that she has returned, she won't be leaving again. Considering the extended duration of our courtship, it is perfectly natural for us to decide on marriage," Jiang Huaizhou explained.
"Miss Qu, I implore you, refrain from slandering my wife simply because your advances were rebuffed. Your audacity truly astounds me," Jiang Huaizhou remarked with disdain.
Jiang Huaizhou made no attempt to conceal the evident joy radiating from him.
Though he refrained from voicing it aloud, Qu Mengyu could discern from his beaming expression that he was profoundly relieved he had not accepted her.
"Nonsense! I employed an investigator to look into her background! She previously had a relationship with Lu Qiyuan!" Qu Mengyu shrieked, her voice piercing the air.
"She concealed this fact from you, and yet you proceeded to marry her. You are undoubtedly going to live to regret that decision!" Qu Mengyu bellowed.
Even within the confines of the hallway, Qu Mengyu made no effort to modulate her voice.
It was evident she desired her words to be heard by all, a truly malicious tactic.
A dark cloud descended upon Jiang Huaizhou's face. He completely disregarded Qu Mengyu, instead casting a cold sneer towards her parents.
"CEO Qu, our business partnership has concluded. Do you intend to extinguish the last embers of cordiality that remain between us? Will you permit your daughter to spew such venomous slander against my wife? The methods employed by the Qu Family have truly been an eye-opener for me."
"I am even more grateful that I did not acquiesce to the terms you previously proposed." Jiang Huaizhou suddenly seemed to have an epiphany, stating, "Ah, that explains it. Despite the Qu Family possessing considerable wealth and esteemed status, you were willing to take in a humble fellow like myself. It is most probable that you lacked the courage to allow your daughter to marry into another family of equal standing. If you had done so, your family might have inadvertently become adversaries with that other prominent family, thus you opted to exert pressure on me instead. Am I not correct in my assessment?"
A somber expression settled upon Qu Xiangqian's visage.
When Qu Mengyu recounted the events to Qu Xiangqian, he had readily believed her account.
However, he had never anticipated that Jiang Huaizhou would skillfully shift the blame.
