Klaus, a resilient 15-year-old janitor at Ross Academy, labors to support his frail mother in the lawless slums of Ross City, saving for the Celestial Water that will awaken his latent abilities upon turning 16. In a world reshaped by spiritual Qi and evolving threats, he risks everything by secretly spying on students' sword training, capturing notes on stances, strikes, and grips to hone his skills with a makeshift wooden sword. After dodging a reckless student on a bike and sharing a tender meal with his mother, who hides her own burdens, Klaus practices relentlessly under the evening sky, his determination unyielding.

On the following morning, Klaus and his mother carried on with their everyday chores. He made his way to the academy for his cleaning duties, as she left to handle her own tasks. His birthday loomed only nine days ahead, prompting him to toil even harder in order to scrape together the cash for Celestial Water—that scarce elixir designed to activate the mutant gene and unlock a person's hidden potential.

Unbeknownst to Klaus, his mother had already obtained the elixir, though she chose not to burden him with the details of how. Instead, she maintained the pretense, acting as if she were pushing herself just as fiercely.

By April 12th, Klaus's special day arrived. He stirred awake with a heavy gloom settling over him, as though the burdens of the entire world pressed upon his frame. His mother was absent, yet she had placed a message for him to find.

"Happy birthday, buddy! Skip work today; I've prepared a surprise just for you." A smile crept across Klaus's face while he clutched the note.

"She's truly the greatest. It's unfortunate I couldn't gather sufficient funds for the awakening elixir. I suppose I'll need to continue saving. From what those experts say, after hitting 16, I've got roughly half a month left to possibly ignite my innate talent."

A sigh escaped Klaus as these thoughts swirled in his mind. He'd eavesdropped on talks and even peeked into sessions explaining the awakening process. It was a pursuit he craved intensely, yet it remained beyond his grasp. Still, since it was his birthday, despite the haze and heaviness clouding him, he resolved to wear a cheerful expression for his mom's sake.

Hours after rising, his mother came back, carrying a modest bag containing a cake. "Happy birthday, Klaus! I realize this is nothing extravagant, but we'll make do for the time being. Once I land that position, life around here will brighten up considerably," she remarked, her face beaming with tender, maternal affection.

"This means the world, Mom," Klaus responded, returning her grin. He shut his eyes briefly, formed a silent wish, and extinguished the tiny flame atop the cake. Though basic, the festivity infused the space with cozy unity and heartfelt connection.

They settled at their humble, battered table to divide the cake. The interlude was serene, yet brimming with affection. They chatted about minor matters—recollections from Klaus's early years, dreams for what lay ahead, and the trials they'd endured side by side.

As the final crumbs vanished, Klaus caught a peculiar expression on his mother's features, as if she concealed a secret. "Mom, are you alright?" he inquired, worry etching his voice.

His mother drew in a steadying breath before dipping into her pocket. "I've got a present for you, Klaus. This isn't your ordinary birthday token… it's the very thing I know you've longed for."

Klaus observed intently as she extracted a petite vial from her pocket. The fluid within gleamed with a subtle, ethereal radiance. His pulse quickened. "Is that…?"

"Indeed, it's the Celestial Water," she confirmed, moisture gathering in her gaze. "I understand its importance to you. I aimed to offer you the opportunity to rouse your talent."

Klaus found himself at a loss for words. He'd strived relentlessly, aiming to afford this very item, and now it rested in his mother's grasp. "Mom… how on earth did you…?" His tone faltered, emotions surging uncontrollably.

His mother dismissed the question with a shake of her head, her eyes sparkling with devotion. "Leave that aside, Klaus. The key point is you possess it now. You merit this entirely."

Tears could no longer be restrained by Klaus. He darted to his mother, enveloping her in a firm embrace. "Thank you, Mom. Thank you endlessly… I can't even express it…"

His mother clasped him near, her tears now flowing unchecked. "Words aren't necessary, Klaus. Simply remember how proud you make me. Regardless of outcomes, you've filled me with pride."

There they remained, locked in an embrace, shedding joyful and easing tears. In that instant, the load of their hardships appeared to ease, at least momentarily. They recognized the road ahead stretched far, but presently, their bond sufficed.

"Go ahead, consume it and trigger your talent before I rethink and hawk it to another," his mother jested, lightening the charged mood. Klaus let out a laugh, brushing away his tears, and carefully accepted the vial from her.

He ventured outdoors, where the twilight breeze chilled his skin, and proceeded to the modest structure at the rear of their home. It served as a tranquil spot where he'd frequently attempted meditation, albeit without much success. On this night, however, an air of distinction hung in the atmosphere. This night marked his turning point.

"The figure from my visions, if you're attuned at this instant, this represents my make-or-break juncture. Spare me the embarrassment," Klaus murmured to himself, blending humor with earnest intent.

He positioned himself centrally in the compact chamber, cradling the Celestial Water vial. The contents emitted a soft luminescence, throbbing with enigmatic vigor. Klaus inhaled deeply, striving to soothe his pounding heart. This was the pivotal instant he'd anticipated.

With the stopper removed, he paused briefly before swallowing the contents. The fluid felt refreshing as it descended his throat, and he anticipated an instant response—some sensation at minimum. Known for its potency in rousing the mutant gene and revealing one's innate talent, the Celestial Water promised profound effects.

Legends claimed that upon ingestion, a torrent of vitality would inundate the body, accompanied by revelations of one's core strength flooding the thoughts.

Yet as Klaus lingered in position, anticipating the shift, silence prevailed. He endured a bit more, hoping for a stir, but zilch occurred. No rush of vitality, no apparitions, no indication of transformation.

Klaus's spirits plummeted. He lifted his lids, fixing his stare on his palms as though sheer will might summon change. Yet the enclosure stayed hushed, and his form registered no difference from prior.

"What's the matter?" he whispered to the empty air, unease starting to infiltrate. Tales abounded of individuals experiencing swift impacts from the elixir. Why did it falter for him?

He endeavored to compose himself, recalling that perhaps delay was involved. Conceivably, deeper concentration or meditation was required. He sealed his eyes once more, attempting mental clarity, but the fret eating at him rendered it futile.

Time ticked by in minutes, and the void persisted. Klaus unveiled his eyes anew, the truth dawning harshly. The elixir failed to activate. Meant to ignite his talent, it yielded no trace of ignition.

He slumped there, gaze locked on the ground, the crush of letdown bearing upon him. Such optimism had fueled him, priming him for this occasion. Now, it appeared that optimism rang hollow.

Precisely as despondency gripped Klaus, a burst of vitality detonated inside his frame. Akin to an internal blast, it elicited a sharp intake of breath, his eyes flaring wide in astonishment. The might almost toppled him, yet he clung to his seat, fingers digging into the surface for anchor.

Tremors seized his body, beyond his command, while the vitality rampaged within. It proved staggering, surpassing any prior sensation. He sensed it racing along his vessels, permeating every limb and organ.

Odd phenomena then unfolded. Electric arcs danced about his fingers, vivid and intense, vanishing in the blink of an eye. His respiration hitched upon witnessing blazes dart along his limbs, caressing without harm.

Abruptly, the surrounding atmosphere turned frigid, frost blooming on the floor below. Yet equally swift, the ice thawed as liquid beads materialized in the air, whirling about him in a miniature tempest.

The surface underfoot quaked, and he perceived the soil responding to his inner force. Umbrae deepened nearby, elongating and contorting bizarrely, even as a soft gust arose, tousling his locks and bearing hints of might.

An odd, radiant sheen started to radiate from his epidermis, syncing with his heartbeat's rhythm. Gentle and comforting, this glow pulsed with vitality, tied to his fundamental core.

The barrage of feelings swamped Klaus, his thoughts whirling to grasp the unfolding. He detected the primal forces encircling him—thunder, blaze, frost, liquid, soil, obscurity, gale, and radiance—all attuned to his internal surge, as though integrated into his essence.

Gulps of air came unevenly as he battled to harness the might coursing through. Never before had he encountered such intensity. Dread and thrill intertwined seamlessly.

Briefly, Klaus teetered on the brink of surrender, fearing the vitality might devour him whole. Then, as abruptly as it ignited, the outburst subsided. The surrounding forces quieted—the arcs dimmed, the blazes ebbed, the umbrae withdrew.

Klaus ended up centered in the space, his form still buzzing with echoes of the recent torrent. He drew a profound breath to regain poise, his psyche spinning from the ordeal.

In a flash, yet another surge of vitality detonated in Klaus's core, dispatching fierce tremors across his whole being. Its ferocity eclipsed all prior encounters, and prior to any response, a piercing agony lanced his mind, resembling a blade through his crown. The torment eclipsed everything, plunging his awareness into oblivion nearly at once.

His frame stayed upright, but his awareness drifted off, merging into the void.

For an instant, utter nothingness reigned—no ache, no noise, no feeling whatsoever. It mimicked demise. Or perhaps… an alternate occurrence had transpired.
