The King's Lover Chapter 550: Busy Lately
Previously on The King's Lover...
It had been three days since Edith showed up at her door, and she was getting the hang of her new duties better than she had expected.
The butler was a much better help than Edith, but even without his input, she would have been able to figure it out.
Edith and Henry were required to report to her every morning after breakfast. They also took orders from her and couldn’t do anything new without first asking her.
She was pretty much acclimated to giving orders and making sure they were followed to the letter. However, there were a lot of changes she wanted to make, but Rose knew it wasn’t the right time yet.
"You have been busy lately," Caius said as he sat on her bed while the maids helped her get ready for bed.
"You noticed," she said with a small smile as she looked at him from the dresser’s mirror. She didn’t have to ask to know what he was talking about.
"Do you really believe there is anything that happens in the castle without my knowledge?"
"Well, I hoped you wouldn’t find out. At least not yet."
"You kept it away from me, on purpose." He looked offended.
"I may have, but only because you were going to stop me."
"You sound so convinced."
Isla and Chelsy stepped away and bowed. "Thank you, ladies," Rose said, dismissing them.
They nodded and bowed haphazardly towards Caius before fleeing out of the room.
They still acted nervously in Caius’s presence. Rose couldn’t blame them; she wondered if she would be the same if she didn’t know him as intimately as she did.
She remembered the first time she had seen him by the well. He had been terrifying, even though he was lying down under the tree without a care in the world.
She smiled lightly. The memory felt quite distant. It certainly felt like a long time ago with how far they had come.
She took another look at her hair braided into one single braid behind her back, exactly as she had requested. She was about to stand on her feet when she caught sight of Caius rising from the bed.
She stepped away from the dresser seat and turned around, just as he stopped right in front of her. His black hair was still slightly wet, and his robe parted slightly, revealing the top half of his torso.
"You didn’t answer me," he said as he blocked her path.
She stepped even closer and put her arms around his neck, staring right into his brown eyes. "What was your question?"
Caius was quick to wrap an arm around her waist, a smile tugging at his lips. "I forgot," he announced with pride as he dipped his head to take her lips.
Rose was smiling as she kissed him back, savoring the coolness of his lips and the warmth of his tongue. The contrast was quite alluring.
He deepened the kiss, and his hand moved to her rear, grabbing it through the flimsy nightdress. He pressed her against himself, his hardness pressing against her lower abdomen.
He broke the kiss, staring at her with a slight frown, but his hand on her backside remained. "You are distracting me."
"I wouldn’t dare," she grinned.
"I would argue otherwise."
"Is that so?"
"Yes. You said you didn’t tell me because I would stop you, and you sounded so convinced."
"You would have," she replied.
"You don’t know that."
"So you won’t?"
"Well, right now is a very delicate period. You are pregnant, and I don’t want you to do anything strenuous."
"We don’t know if I am pregnant yet."
"I think you know. You wouldn’t tell me if you were so unsure."
"Now, you know me."
"I like to believe I do, which is why it hurts that you would keep this from me."
"It wasn’t really on purpose," she admitted. "The opportunity never arose, and I wanted to get used to my new duties first."
"Has there been any problem? Need my help?"
"Do you think I can’t handle it?"
"You know that’s not true."
"True."
"I am more shocked that my mother was willing to relinquish her duties to you. Imagine my surprise when Henry mentioned that he reported to you now."
"Blasted Henry. A blabbermouth, I tell you."
"So you keeping it away from me on purpose."
"Of course not, Your Majesty. I wouldn’t dare keep anything from my husband. Also, your mother was hardly doing me a favor. I suspect she hoped I would crash and burn."
Caius’s brows knitted. He was aware of his mother’s hostility to Rose. If there wasn’t evidence that his mother had nothing to do with her attack, he would be certain she was the one behind it.
She had once attacked Rose directly before. He doubted his wife’s current status would deter her.
"Do you want me to do something about it?"
She chuckled and pressed between his brows, easing the crease. "Why so serious? It is nothing I can’t handle. Besides, isn’t this my role to begin with? I am Queen, am I not?"
"That you are. You are my Queen."
She kissed him. "I know."
His nose flared, and he rested his forehead on hers. "You should know better than to tease me."
"I would dare—ahh!" she screamed as he lifted her off the floor and carried her to the bed. "Your Majesty!" she squealed.
He smirked and got into the bed. He pulled her to his body, his fingers lightly caressing her skin as he stared at her with a knowing look on his face.
Rose tried to swat his hand away, but that only encouraged him, and he splattered her neck with kisses.
"Your Majesty," she cried as she attempted to stop him from tickling her, but the sound of her voice betrayed her.
"Your Majesty?" he asked as he kissed the top of her breasts.
"Caius. Is that better?"
He lifted his head, meeting her eyes. She could see the candlelight flickering in his pupils. "Very much so," he said and kissed her lips.
