But then, if something were to befall the child, how would one face the parents? The Elder had anticipated this child for such a long time, and this unfortunate turn of events would surely bring immense disappointment.
Yu Zexiao and Jian Anning exchanged a glance, their brows furrowing in silent concern. After a moment, Yu Zexiao offered a strained smile, "Mom, we happened to meet Yunting on the way and decided to pay a visit to the Leng Family. We apologize for not informing you beforehand."
Shen Lanxiao didn't probe further. "You're at the Leng Family's? Please send my regards to Dr. Feng for me."
Yu Zexiao nodded. "Understood. We'll be back tonight."
By evening, most of the tests would likely be concluded. Yu Zexiao glanced at Jian Anning, her eyes mirroring his own anxiety. Yet, they both understood the necessity of withholding this information from their parents for the time being, to spare them unnecessary worry, let alone the Elder. They resolved to wait for definitive news before sharing it.
After concluding the call, Feng Linxue reassured them, "In truth, there's little cause for excessive worry. While one fetus appears weaker, it's too early to determine the full extent. What you've envisioned is the most dire outcome, and frankly, its probability is quite low. Even in such a scenario, modern medical technology generally ensures the survival of at least one child, given that the stronger fetus exhibits excellent vital signs. As for any potential congenital issues, you needn't fret."
The ultrasound had only revealed a disparity in size between the two fetuses, with the smaller one appearing frail. Any severe congenital conditions, however, were beyond the detection capabilities of the ultrasound at this stage.
Her tone was remarkably composed, her analytical approach offering a measure of comfort to the visibly distressed Yu Zexiao and Jian Anning.
Without further delay, they promptly secured a vehicle to head to the hospital. This time, Feng Linxue guided them to a state-of-the-art military hospital, where, as an honorary director, she expedited their visit, granting them immediate access for a four-dimensional ultrasound, bypassing the usual appointment procedures.
As the cold ultrasound probe moved across Jian Anning's abdomen, both she and Yu Zexiao, standing beside her, were overcome with trepidation. The doctor, meticulously examining the screen, conferred occasionally with Feng Linxue. This prompted Jian Anning to anxiously inquire, "Doctor, will my child be alright?"
"The color ultrasound indicates that the amniotic sac membrane is largely intact. Conjoined twins are unlikely," the doctor stated. This initial pronouncement brought a wave of relief to both Jian Anning and Yu Zexiao.
"However," the doctor quickly added, "we still cannot ascertain the precise condition of the smaller fetus. It could be a case of delayed development or possibly a malformation. The likelihood of such is exceedingly slim, as this is generally uncommon. Even if it were the case, the larger fetus should remain unharmed."
This qualification sent a fresh wave of anxiety through them. Yu Zexiao promptly asked, "Doctor... if the smaller fetus encounters complications in the womb, what repercussions might arise for the other child and the mother?"
In the grim possibility of an emergency, should the decision be to save the adult or the child? For Yu Zexiao, the answer was unequivocally the adult. This was not an antiquated era; there was no justification for Jian Anning to suffer needlessly.
Should the smaller fetus tragically be stillborn, it could pose significant risks to both the surviving child and the mother during gestation. Alternatively, if it was a malformation, it could adversely affect the development of the other baby as well.
