The Invincible Full-Moon System Chapter 1888: Slaughter Under the Rain (2)
Previously on The Invincible Full-Moon System...
While a pack of wolves in the wild operates as cursorial predators, relying on endurance to hunt, werewolves have evolved beyond this innate constitution. As supernatural beings intrinsically linked to wolves, their predatory instincts have become more refined, transforming them into apex predators suited not for prolonged chases, but for swift ambushes and direct, brutal confrontations. They possess unparalleled stamina, negating the need to wear down their prey.
Tonight, Rex embraced this advantage. Strength, the element of surprise, and the rain all worked in his favor. Unlike his measured approach in the Spirit Realm, Rex lacked the patience for conventional methods to obtain what he desired. His actions were driven by a relentless race against time, a race that felt even more urgent now, especially with Adhara involved.
Every passing moment was an agony, with the dread of a notification announcing Adhara's demise looming.
He had once shed blood and sweat to save Nivellen, driven by a sense of obligation for her protection against Chaos. But Adhara was different. Her strong will, the captivating beauty of her anger, and the unyielding fire in her eyes—the thought of losing these made him furious.
Rex was indebted to Adhara not just for her role in keeping him grounded since university, but also for his promise to protect her. She was his closest confidant, the sole person with whom he could share everything.
There was no limit to what he would do for her, regardless of the cruelty or immorality involved, as long as it ensured her safety.
More importantly, he hadn't yet expressed his recognition of her success as the Female Alpha.
He was fully aware of her actions during his absence, with Evelyn and Gistella leaving no detail unrecorded. Rex knew Adhara had successfully delayed Sven, preventing Princess Selene and her forces from receiving any support, and had even gleaned knowledge from Sven.
As the Female Alpha poised to be the strongest in his absence, she had performed admirably, especially considering the limited assistance she received from him.
Rex yearned to tell her this, understanding the profound impact his words would have.
For that to happen, Adhara needed to survive the Lunirich Gods.
Thus, when an opportunity presented itself, as it did tonight, Rex wouldn't hesitate. After all, Zev's reliability was not absolute—he might fail to deliver. Then there was the matter of the Sudden Quest, which would permanently bestow upon him any passive skills or abilities acquired through devouring.
His ultimate aim was the mastery of the dominant energy within the God Realm, a feat guaranteed by the sudden quest.
Therefore, his focus rightly remained on acquiring potent passive skills and abilities from those he devoured.
While Pale Defenders were prime targets, diversifying his options was never a bad idea.
Rex surveyed the entire warehouse area, identifying all targets for elimination. After consuming Shadow's corpse and obtaining the Stealth Oustification, effective for ten hours, he vanished into the silence.
His presence became virtually undetectable with the Steel Oustification, a skill that powerfully complemented his other abilities in concealing his movements.
Rex initially intended to eliminate those operating underground but was deterred by the exorbitant cost of the necessary item to access them without using the main entrance—a deficit of fifteen million gold. Acquiring such a sum would normally be a significant hurdle.
However, this was not the case in the God Realm, where defeating Godlings yielded millions in gold, not mere hundreds of thousands.
Rex proceeded to the backyard and slipped through one of the two portals located there.
The thugs inside the confined space, caught completely off guard by his sudden appearance, were stunned.
Before they could react, Rex's obsidian steel claws found their throats, tearing out their hearts, which he promptly stored in his inventory before their blood even hit the ground.
His grim work continued into the backyard, dispatching a small group of thugs engrossed in a game, their attention diverted. Such a lack of vigilance was rare on Silverbell Street following past events, and their guard was further lowered by the fact that their superior was occupied elsewhere.
Rex advanced at a measured pace.
Thanks to the Stealth Oustification rendering his presence almost imperceptible, none of them detected his approach.
Furthermore, the intense downpour effectively concealed his movements.
Even if he had been humming a tune, these thugs would have remained oblivious until his claws were already at their necks.
Within the confines of the warehouse, Rex brought an end to the life of a wandering thug. Leveraging the accumulated gold, he procured the necessary item to infiltrate the subterranean chamber, where he systematically eliminated every thug he encountered.
From a vantage point below, he observed Roger pass by, then discreetly emerged to dispatch the remaining adversaries.
The operation was executed flawlessly.
Not a single thug was afforded the opportunity to mount a defense.
It wasn't a matter of their lack of strength. Rather, they were caught entirely off guard, never anticipating an attack from a customer. Furthermore, they were unaware that this particular customer possessed knowledge of the hidden portals concealed in every corner of the warehouse.
And so, before Roger could even comprehend the situation, he found himself as the sole survivor.
"A fine night for a downpour, wouldn't you agree?" Rex inquired, still reveling in the heavy rain.
"What…?!" Roger's gaze fell upon Rex, his expression one of utter disbelief before his eyes narrowed and his teeth clenched. "You orchestrated this? You're the one who eliminated them all?! I don't comprehend. I believed we had resolved our prior disagreements."
An offense had been committed against Rex by one of his subordinates, yet amends had already been offered and seemingly accepted.
Rex had appeared to pardon the transgression, evidenced by his act of breaking Ardi's wrist.
Still, for reasons unknown, he had returned and carried out a massacre.
"Indeed, our differences were settled."
"Then why—?!"
"Merely a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time," Rex stated, his eyes opening and his gaze tilting downwards. His burning crimson irises, which seemed to intensify their glow under the deluge, fixed upon Roger, a deadly luminescence shimmering within them. "Furthermore… is a reason truly necessary for taking a life? What if my desire is simply to do so?"
"I understand…" Roger's features twisted into a grimace.
He drew his exquisitely crafted green sword from its scabbard, gripping it firmly with both hands.
Despite his stoic demeanor, prepared for combat, his heart pounded furiously within his chest.
'What in the world is he…?' A droplet of cold sweat traced a path down Roger's face. 'Never mind his ability to bypass my senses and annihilate my men. How is he projecting such intense killing intent? He appeared young, and his presence felt young. How is this possible?'
Roger's brow furrowed in confusion.
He had personally ended the lives of billions with his blade. Within his domain, his bloodlust was considered unparalleled.
Yet, inexplicably, the killing intent emanating from Rex far surpassed his own.
'I highly doubt he has slain significantly more than I have,' Roger's eyes widened. 'Could it be… could he have wounded a God?'
Rex observed the dawning realization spreading across Roger's face.
"You need not lift a finger." Rex turned, his attention casually falling upon the last remaining survivor as if an afterthought. "You possess nothing that I desire, and I have no intention of ending your life. Simply stand aside. Continue your day as you normally would." A single finger traced a lazy circle, gesturing towards the carnage, the spilled blood, the profound silence. "Pretend this never transpired.
"I am still new to this realm. A newcomer. I wish to avoid any unnecessary conflict." he added.
It was rather ironic that Rex proclaimed his desire to avoid trouble subsequent to his actions against the other thugs.
However, the statement held a core of truth.
Equally true was his lack of intent to eliminate Roger.
Examining Roger's status window revealed no skills or passive abilities that piqued Rex's interest.
He was a swordsman. A master of the blade. Everything about him was intrinsically tied to his sword, which did not align with Rex's personal combat style in the slightest. Perhaps it was the primal instincts of his werewolf nature speaking, but he inherently disliked the use of weapons unless they were clawed gloves or the situation absolutely mandated it.
More critically, he had acquired sufficient 'bodies' to fulfill the requirements of the Sudden Quest.
Killing Roger was, therefore, an unnecessary action.
"You must realize I cannot do that," Roger stated, his grip tightening on his sword as he assumed a battle-ready stance. Green energy surged from his core, coursing through his arms and suffusing the blade with its power. "Though it may not appear so, those individuals you executed… they were cherished by me. Consequently, I cannot simply overlook this transgression."
"A pity…" Rex extended his arms wide. "Proceed. I will ensure it is swift."
"Five Sword Air-cutting Hurricane. First Form!"
Swoosh—!
Like a swift gale, Roger closed the distance between them in an instant, reaching Rex's position.
Despite the ground being slick from the smooth surface and the ongoing rain, his momentum remained unimpeded.
"Five Sword Thrust!"
Roger concentrated his energy into the tip of his sword, executing a ferocious thrust. His blade bypassed Rex's defenses, piercing his abdomen—only to be halted by a resplendent crimson energy. It was an energy he could perceive but not physically interact with.
'He's a visitor. That signifies he's not proficient in this realm's native energies. Victory is within my grasp!'
A smirk playing on his lips, Roger twisted his sword, and the distinct sound of shattering glass resonated through the air.
From the tip of the sword, spiritual energy fanned outward—splashing into five spinning swords that converged on Rex from every direction at once. 'He can't sense my Qi, I'm sure. He's a visitor,' Roger thought; his eyes flashed with sudden excitement. 'His only advantage was ambush. In a direct fight, he's weak!'
It was a mistake for Rex to reveal that information to him.
Now, Roger intends to exploit that glaring weakness.
But things are not quite that simple.
Clang—!
His eyes widened in disbelief.
Just as the other five spinning swords were about to strike Rex from all angles, his body twisted unnaturally. His reaction was phantom-like, and before Roger could even process it, all of the spinning swords were deflected.
Some were even shattered.
Once the reddish Qi freed his sword, the momentum propelled him forward.
Gritting his teeth, he spun and lashed out with his sword. His attacks came in a perfect sequence—each slash precise, each strike heavy with intent. His flowing movements spoke of mastery, of years spent devoted to the blade. Yet, it was not enough.
Rex clapped his hands together, catching the descending sword between his palms.
Five more swords splashed out, but the same outcome ensued.
All were parried.
"Using my weakness against me. Smart," Rex stood upright and smiled—exposing his sharp canines. "But do you really believe I wouldn't devise a way to counteract that weakness?"
Roger blinked, and it was then he noticed that the rain could not reach Rex.
It stopped an inch away, as if an invisible barrier was present.
Naturally, this was the Law of Misdirection at play.
Rex couldn't sense the incoming attacks, but the instant they impacted the Law he had layered around his body, he could react. The Law granted him merely a fraction of a second—the attacks could cleave through it almost instantaneously, but with his extreme reaction speed, a fraction was all he required.
A flying golden disc, which had been stealthily lurking, came in fast from the side.
It struck the stunned Roger from the flank, breaking several ribs and forcing blood from his mouth.
"You should have done nothing," Rex slowly transformed into his monstrous form under Roger's shocked gaze. "But it's far too late now."
Meanwhile, Bellana bit her lower lip and passed through the portal once more.
She knew she was supposed to investigate where the portal led within the Cavity, but she couldn't resist. Rex had claimed he forgot something in the car, a clear fabrication. And a significant amount of time had passed, yet he still hadn't returned.
"What on earth is he doing?" Bellana voiced her thoughts aloud.
Carefully, she exited the private chamber and made her way to the main gate.
And upon emerging on the other side, her breath hitched in her throat.
"Couldn't heed others' warnings, huh? Let me tell you this… Curiosity can indeed get you killed, you know."
