But that was aside. I was supposed to meet Layla today in an hour. After I sent her an email asking if she wanted to meet up, she had surprisingly agreed. I was supposed to pick her up from work at ten, and then we would go to a club she frequented. Clubs really weren’t my thing, but I figured I could survive one night, right?
"So," Nala said, nodding. "Carrie has agreed to back the project, at least for now."
I leaned back in my chair. "That’s good, right?"
She got up and walked around her office until she reached the window. She stared outside for a few seconds before turning toward me and crossing her arms. I could tell she wasn’t completely happy about the situation, but she had been forced to accept it. I guessed she needed some time to get used to the idea that Carrie had changed and wasn’t the same woman who had caused all those problems before.
"I guess you fucked some sense into her." She shrugged. "And I really hope she has changed, Evan."
"She has." I nodded. "Trust me."
"Mm." She walked back to her desk and sat down. "The project continues."
"Yep." I smiled. "It continues."
"Thanks to you." She looked at me. "I have no idea how many times I’m going to have to thank you for doing something for me, Evan."
"No need to thank me." I met her eyes, my voice becoming more serious. "Every morning when I wake up next to you is enough for me."
The system rewarded me with ten points from her, but since she was already maxed out, they didn’t actually increase anything. Still, knowing she trusted me enough to hear something like that without questioning it was more than enough.
"I have to arrange a meeting with the board." She picked up her tablet.
"And I have to take my coffee break before I go insane." I got up from my chair. "Take care, CEO. Don’t overwork yourself."
I left her office and headed toward the break room. The moment I stepped into the corridor, I could already hear people talking about the latest news.
"Did you hear who the new backer is?"
"Carrie."
"No way."
"Apparently, yes. Ms. Nolin got her to agree."
I kept walking without getting involved. News traveled quickly around the company, especially when it involved someone as famous as Carrie. It looked like everyone already knew she was considering backing Project Phoenix, even though the deal was still being worked out.
By the time I reached the break room, there was nobody inside. It was only ten in the morning, so most people were probably still working or had already taken their breaks earlier.
I made myself a cup of tea this time and carried it out to the balcony. The weather was cool, and the light rain tapping against the awning made the whole place feel quieter than usual.
I pulled out my cigarette packet and took the first cigarette of the three I was allowed that day. I lit it, took a deep drag, and leaned against the railing.
I still couldn’t believe what had happened yesterday. I had somehow ended up sleeping with a mother and daughter without either of them knowing about the other. Did I feel like a jackass afterward? Sure. Did the system punish me with Bad Boy points for it? Of course. Did I regret it?
Hell no.
My phone rang, pulling me out of my thoughts. I pulled it from my pocket and looked at the screen. It was Melvin.
"Hey," I answered.
"Evan." His voice immediately sounded excited. "Um, did you hear? There’s going to be a party at Stingy Ladies. Are you going?"
"Probably not. Why?"
"Will you go with me?" he asked, sounding desperate. "I want to see Isabella there."
Yeah, Isabella. I still had to play the part of a matchmaker. Honestly, the guy was a lost cause. He and Isabella were almost complete opposites, and I didn’t know the first thing about matchmaking. I supposed I could compliment him whenever she was around and try to make him look good, but beyond that, I was basically improvising.
"Sure." I exhaled. "Let me know when it happens."
"YES! You’re the best, thank you!"
Before I could respond, my phone gave another small ring. I looked at the screen and saw another call coming in.
"Someone else is calling." I said. "Bye, Melvin."
"I love you, man. I love you!"
I hung up and answered the other call.
"Hello?"
"Hey, it’s Emma." The caller replied. "Did you think about my offer yet?"
Emma and her offer. Right. She wanted me to be her partner for the adult activities she had been involved in since her previous partner was no longer available. I still wasn’t sure about it. Our identities would be hidden, and they supposedly wouldn’t see my face, but I didn’t know whether the same arrangement would apply to Emma. The possibility of someone recognizing me still made me uneasy.
"I don’t know." I exhaled. "Come to the penthouse sometime. We can talk about it properly and figure out exactly what you’re offering."
"I already told you. Mostly footjob videos. I mean, you can fuck me in front of the camera as well. Viewers love some action. No anal, though. And you have to wear a condom. Don’t wanna get pregnant." She replied casually. "Other than that... I don’t know what to say, really."
"Just... face-to-face. Please. Would that work for you?"
"Okay, okay, sure." She said. "I’ll call you once I’m free."
"Yeah. That’d be great."
"Alright. See you soon, then. Bye."
I ended the call and took another drag from my cigarette while looking out over the city.
"What a busy man I’ve become, huh?"
