Lucas reflected on his tragic past, from being disowned by the Huttons with his mother to her death after years of hardship and his failed pleas for help. After a forced marriage to Cheyenne and joining the military, he returned to the Carter residence. Overhearing the family arranging Cheyenne's remarriage to Mr. Miller while dismissing him as dead, he knocked on the door and faced shock, insults from Karen about his late mother, and an attempted assault from her husband, halted by his subordinate Jordan.

“Stand down!” Lucas bellowed at Jordan. “This is a family matter. Leave first.”

Jordan pulled his hand back unwillingly but obediently, shot another fierce glare at Cheyenne’s parents, and walked out.

Cheyenne’s parents brimmed with bitterness, yet they didn’t dare touch Lucas physically anymore.

Jordan’s frightening stare had scared them, and they felt some hesitation toward Lucas as well.

But upon eyeing Lucas’s inexpensive outfit and that familiar calm look from years ago, their concerns melted away.

They were overthinking it. A loser stays a loser! “Why are you lingering at the door? Get in here quick, you embarrassing pest!” Karen flung the door wide in fury and stormed inside.

Cheyenne’s father snorted coldly, clearly irritated by the sight of Lucas.

Lucas trailed after them into the house.

The Carters’ living room buzzed with energy right then, packed with over a dozen relatives.

Spotting Lucas entering behind Cheyenne’s parents, many relatives who recognized him showed confusion.

“Isn’t that... the loser? What’s he doing back all of a sudden?”

“Who? You mean that good-for-nothing from earlier? Didn’t you say he was dead?”

“Beats me. He vanished for years, and now with Mr. Miller’s engagement to Cheyenne coming up, he crawls back. Who knows what schemes he’s plotting?!”

“He’s surely up to no good.”

Lucas scanned the crowd, noting some familiar mockers and others he’d never seen.

The one drawing all eyes sat smack in the middle of the sofa, a young man in his mid-to-late twenties.

Dressed sharply with slicked-back hair and slight bags under his eyes, he clearly indulged in booze and women.

Lucas figured this must be Mr. Miller, the fresh fiancé the Carters picked for Cheyenne that everyone buzzed about.

Lucas sneered inwardly. They cherish this trash like gold?

Cheyenne’s absence from the living room left Lucas, eager to see her, a bit let down.

Karen snapped irritably, “We’re done wasting words on you anyway. Today’s gathering is about Mr. Miller and Cheyenne’s wedding. Perfect timing on your part. No need to chase your death certificate now. Once Cheyenne returns, divorce her right away.”

Lucas stayed silent.

The relatives present suddenly unleashed a wave of mocking jabs at him.

“What’s wrong? Refusing the divorce?”

“No surprise. He lucked into marrying Orange County’s top beauty and linking up with the Carters. Naturally, he’ll grip on tight.”

“So thick-skinned. Can’t he see he’s nowhere near Mr. Miller? Zero shame!”

“Check out his ragged look. Not fit to polish Mr. Miller’s shoes! Scram already!”

Cheyenne’s father slammed the table and declared, “Let’s be straight. I won’t let my daughter waste away with you! What can a broke guy like you offer her? If you’ve got any shame left, any manhood, divorce her now. Quit dragging Cheyenne down and stalling her life!”

Lucas shut his eyes, staying remarkably poised. “If Cheyenne no longer wants me, she can tell me herself, and I’ll divorce her on the spot. But none of you have the authority to decide for us!” he snapped with a sneer, glaring at everyone.

What? This failure claims we lack the right?!

Before their anger could erupt, a burst of laughter cut them off.

Mr. Miller was clearly ready to speak. They had to let him go first!

Seth Miller lounged on the sofa, toying with his Patek Philippe watch and oversized ring while eyeing Lucas.

“You must be that... guy, huh? What’ve you been up to all these years?”

Lucas replied coolly, “Just scraping by.”

Seth laughed once more, clapped, and rose. “Better not make me handle you roughly. Cheyenne’s way above a weakling like you. Anyone can see why you’re latching onto the Carters.”

He pulled a check from his pocket. “Here’s thirty thousand. Enough to keep you going for years. Be wise, grab it, and vanish, or you’ll get zilch,” Seth warned.

Lucas stretched out and took the check as the others sneered in disdain.

“See? All he wants is cash!”

“Typical loser. Bet you’ve never seen that much dough in your life!”

“Mr. Miller barely beckons, and the trash snatches it up. Pathetic.”

A sharp tearing noise echoed through the air, instantly silencing everyone's jeers as they stared at Lucas in utter shock.

This useless bum actually ripped the check!

He shredded the thirty thousand dollar check!

Has he completely lost his mind?!

Incredulous gazes followed as Lucas casually flung the fragments of the destroyed check.

“Seth Miller, you’re just an outsider. You don’t have the right to interfere in our affairs.”
