Although Mark would regularly send back some news, Yang Ruxin still wanted to see with her own eyes how the devoted elder was doing after all these years.
The Du Family originally wanted to send a carriage, but Yang Ruxin declined. She had already rented a carriage yesterday, though she took Du Juan’s maid Xiangru out with her.
As she left the Du Family’s residence, she saw the carriage parked at the alley entrance as expected.
The driver was surnamed Sun and was the fourth child in his family, so everyone called him Sun Fourth. He was resting against the carriage but immediately looked over when he sensed someone coming out from the alley. Upon recognizing Yang Ruxin, he quickly jumped down, saying, "Madam, young miss."
"You’ve been here for a while?" Yang Ruxin nodded.
"Not too long," Sun Fourth chuckled and set down the footstool.
Xiangru quickly carried Lun Dou and Huang Dou onto the carriage first and then helped Yang Ruxin up. Originally, she intended to walk alongside the carriage, but Yang Ruxin called her up as well, since the trip to the outskirts wasn’t close—walking there would be exhausting.
The carriage smoothly exited Santong Lanes and headed towards the countryside.
"Stop the carriage." Yang Ruxin suddenly called out on the street.
Sun Fourth promptly pulled the reins.
Yang Ruxin handed out a pouch, "Go buy four meat buns."
Sun Fourth quickly accepted the pouch and went off.
Xiangru glanced at Yang Ruxin, thinking they’d already had breakfast, so why buy buns?
Yang Ruxin remained silent.
Sun Fourth soon returned, handing back the pouch, "These meat buns from the old Wang Family are the best in Quanzhou. They’re six coins each, a bit pricey, but truly delicious." Saying that, he handed over the buns wrapped in lotus leaves. With four people in the carriage, such big buns were enough for one each.
Yang Ruxin only accepted the pouch but didn’t take the buns, "They’re for you to eat."
"Madam?" Sun Fourth was a bit stunned.
"Let’s go." Yang Ruxin already closed the carriage curtain.
Holding the buns, Sun Fourth’s eyes reddened slightly. Was the madam aware he came early and hadn’t had breakfast? Yet, being just an ordinary citizen living at the bottom rung of society, anyone could trample him, but now...
Sniffing, Sun Fourth raised his whip. Regardless of how many days Madam Gu needed the carriage, he was determined to serve well.
After exiting Quanzhou City and traveling for about two hours, the carriage slowed down.
"Madam, we’ve arrived at Peach Mountain," Sun Fourth said from outside.
Yang Ruxin opened the carriage curtain to look out. Peach Mountain lived up to its name, covered with peach trees. However, it was autumn, so there weren’t any flowers, though many fruits hung from the branches.
The carriage stopped at the foot of the mountain.
Yang Ruxin walked up the mountain with Lun Dou and Huang Dou.
"Mama, does anyone live here?" Huang Dou asked while hopping along.
"Yes, two of Mama’s friends live here," Yang Ruxin nodded.
Peach Mountain wasn’t very tall, and soon they reached the top, then continued along the steps.
"Mama, I hear flute sounds," Lun Dou said, her eyes lighting up. "Over there."
Yang Ruxin followed her daughter’s direction and walked over. Soon, she heard the babbling of water and the melodious sound of a flute.
The group didn’t disturb anyone, quietly standing in the woods listening.
After a while, the flute sound ceased. The white-clad, white-haired gentleman who had been facing away from the woods turned around, "Madam, long time no see."
Yang Ruxin then led her daughter forward, "Master Luo, I hope you’re well."
