"I’m the village head, don’t I have the right to take the first taste?" Erganzi raised his brows.
"Heh." Yang Ruyu let out a cold laugh. "But are you sure you won’t end up killing her in one go?"
Hei Dou, who had just grabbed a piece of sweet potato from the kitchen, ran over and blocked the woodshed door. "Dad, you can’t touch her."
"You get up." Yang Ruyu yanked her son aside in one go. "This is grown‑ups’ business, what’s a kid butting in for?"
"But Lun Dou is a kid too." Hei Dou turned around and grabbed at Erganzi’s coat hem. "Dad, just let her go."
Yang Ruyu gave Erganzi a look. "Your son actually has feelings and loyalty, huh. That’s rare."
Erganzi’s face sank. He grabbed his son up in one hand, turned around, and shut him inside the house.
"Dad..." Hei Dou pounded hard on the door. "I’m begging you."
But no one paid him any attention.
"If you kill her, the villagers won’t be happy about it." Yang Ruyu smiled.
Just then, quite a few villagers came knocking from outside. "Village head, your wife said the girl you brought back is for everyone to get a taste of. When are we starting?"
Erganzi glanced at Yang Ruyu, then waved everyone into the yard. "Since Ayu said she’s to whet everyone’s appetite, we’ll leave her to you."
The villagers all laughed.
"But I took a risk bringing her back. You can’t just give nothing, right?" Yang Ruyu swept her eyes over the crowd. She really didn’t want Erganzi touching that girl—after all, that was her older cousin’s child, which made her her own niece. Sharing a man with her... the thought alone made her skin crawl.
"I’ve got half a sack of cornmeal." A man squeezed in from outside and set a cloth bag on the ground. "Can I go first?"
"Go on." Yang Ruyu nodded.
The man glanced at Erganzi, and seeing he didn’t object, hurried to the woodshed door. "Open up, quick."
The others, seeing how it was, all turned and ran back home to fetch their payments.
Lun Dou heard every word in the yard loud and clear and knew these people meant her harm. She couldn’t help letting out a sigh—looked like this year she really couldn’t get through it without hurting someone.
Very soon, the woodshed door was opened. After one person went in, it was shut again.
Lun Dou sat on the woodpile, watching that sharp‑mouthed, monkey‑cheeked man walk toward her, and spoke up. "What are you doing?"
"Ha, doing you!" The man laughed. "Come on then, little sweetie."
"My mom said, people who bully children all deserve to die." Lun Dou pouted.
The man had no patience to spar words with a little girl. He lunged straight at her—and with a thud, before he even touched Lun Dou, he went flat on the ground and stopped moving.
Xiaojin crouched on Lun Dou’s shoulder, flicking its tongue.
Lun Dou stood up and went over to kick the man. When there was no reaction, she calmly went back to sit down. Xiaojin’s venom was absolutely instantly fatal.
Outside, Yang Ruyu waited and waited, but never heard the screams or pleas for mercy from the woodshed she’d been hoping for. She felt something was off and glanced at Erganzi.
Erganzi also found it odd. Why was it so quiet?
Yang Ruyu walked over and shoved the woodshed door open. What she saw was the same Little Laizi who had gone in earlier sprawled on the ground, motionless, while the little girl was still sitting on the woodpile.
"Little Laizi." Yang Ruyu went over and pushed the man on the floor. There was no response, so she reached out to feel under his nose—and instantly let out a shriek. "Ah! It’s a dead man!"
