Guan Tongshi and her daughter are brought low after their poisonous scheme is revealed. Yang Ruxin, showing leniency for her fellow villagers, spares Guan Qingyue but demands her brother's presence to ensure future obedience. Meanwhile, Gu Cheng investigates two ruffians who were soliciting prostitutes, determining they are not linked to the Ma family and should be monitored.

The entire night passed without the Guan couple finding any rest.

Guan Qingyue fared even worse, her mind in a constant daze. Every time she attempted to close her eyes, the terrifying image of Diewu’s killing flashed before her.

As dawn broke, Guan Danian immediately set out. Without a second thought for the cost, he first made his way to town to secure a carriage, then sped towards the Prefectural City.

He reached the Prefectural City around noon, not allowing himself a moment’s rest or food, and headed straight for the academy.

Guan Qingshu was taken aback by Guan Danian’s reappearance after only a single day. “Has something happened?” he inquired.

At this juncture, Guan Danian could no longer conceal the truth. He recounted the entire affair, asking, “Qingshu, do you truly believe Yang Dani possesses such formidable power?” He harbored a secret hope that this was not the case.

“Ha ha.” Guan Qingshu’s expression instantly turned ashen. “Father, do you honestly think she would jest about a matter of this gravity?”

“But…”

“Allow me to illustrate: the Governor of our Changhuai State is her peer, yet if you were to truly consider it, the Governor himself would likely have to show her deference.”

Guan Danian’s hopes were utterly extinguished. “Then, what are we to do?”

“The fact that she did not directly execute Guan Qingyue suggests she afforded us a measure of consideration. Had she not, my political aspirations would have ended here, let alone any chance of proceeding to Beijing,” Guan Qingshu stated with a wry smile. “If there truly was a murderous sister among us, Elder Wang would never have consented to take me as his disciple… It’s settled, I will request leave from my teacher immediately.”

Guan Danian could only offer a sigh, his resentment towards his daughter intensifying.

Father and son made their hurried journey, their only sustenance a few steamed buns. By the time they reached the village, the sun had already begun its descent in the western sky.

“Father, this situation brooks no delay. I shall seek an audience with Yang Ruxin at once. You, go and bring Qingyue back.”

Throughout their travels, Guan Qingshu elaborated on Yang Ruxin’s true identity to Guan Danian. Only then did Guan Danian grasp the significance of Yang Ruxin being an official who could attend court. While it was uncommon for women to hold such positions, it wasn't entirely unprecedented; the Tang Dynasty had a female emperor, and previous dynasties had their female officials. However, Yang Ruxin was the first in the current dynasty to achieve this distinction.

The faint glimmer of hope that had previously existed was now entirely extinguished.

At the Yang Family residence.

“Please be seated,” Yang Ruxin gestured towards Guan Qingshu.

“Xinxin,” Guan Qingshu began, a sigh escaping him. “I had no idea Guan Qingyue possessed such audacity.”

“Nor did I anticipate it,” Yang Ruxin replied, her eyebrows rising slightly. “She crossed my boundaries and put my family in peril.”

“I understand,” Guan Qingshu nodded. “My Guan Family is indebted to you, and I shall repay this debt within my lifetime.”

Yang Ruxin offered a smile; this was precisely what she desired. Guan Qingshu was a capable individual, and after enduring such trials, his potential seemed boundless. She had no intention of becoming his political adversary.

“The transport team will commence its journey to Beijing early next month.”

Guan Qingshu paused for a brief moment, then nodded affirmatively. “I will remain at home during these intervening days.”

Shortly thereafter, all parties convened. The village head and the Lizheng sternly admonished the Guan Family, demanding they properly discipline their daughter. They warned that further transgressions would result in a report to the authorities and even expulsion from the village.

Given Guan Qingshu’s standing as a Jieyuan, the village head and Lizheng were hesitant to antagonize him directly, yet a formal warning was deemed necessary.

Thus, the matter was concluded. How the Guan Family chose to handle Guan Qingyue’s upbringing was now their own concern.

“Village Head Sir,” Yang Ruxin addressed Yang Mancang. “If you find time, perhaps keep a watchful eye on Mage’s family.”
