A mix of tears and laughter filled the air, with every eye now fixed on the Third Great-Granduncle.
"Then we shall wait," the Third Great-Granduncle declared. "Xinxin is staying at Mancang’s residence, which isn't far from here."
Sanni quickly reappeared. "My eldest sister has arrived."
As Yang Ruxin approached, the collective gaze of the villagers fell upon her, causing a hint of awkwardness. She shot a playful glare at Sanni.
Sticking out her tongue, Sanni chirped, "Eldest sister, these people are disturbing the village's peace and harmony."
"Xinxin, it would be best if we could locate them. Individuals with such poor morals are a blight," the village head chimed in.
Yang Ruxin nodded, then moved to examine the door and the couplet lying on the ground. "This isn't difficult," she stated, before bringing her hand to her mouth and letting out a sharp whistle.
Shortly after, the distinct sound of a wolf's howl echoed back.
Before anyone could process what was happening, a blur of white streaked past, and a massive White Wolf materialized beside Yang Ruxin.
The majority of the villagers recognized Xiaobai and were aware of its connection to Yang Ruxin, thus their fear was somewhat muted.
Patting Xiaobai's head, Yang Ruxin apologized, "Sorry to trouble you with this, but with your assistance, we'll find them quicker. Go now, and investigate who touched both the wooden door and the couplet since yesterday."
"Xinxin, touching doesn't necessarily imply tearing, does it?" someone inquired.
"As everyone has entrusted me with finding this troublemaker, please do not be anxious," Yang Ruxin responded with a smile.
The crowd fell silent, offering no further objections.
Xiaobai let out a low whine before casually trotting away to begin its task.
Despite knowing the large White Wolf posed no threat of biting, the villagers still felt a prickle of unease, instinctively stepping back a couple of paces.
Guan Qingshu had been contemplating whether to approach Yang Ruxin when he unexpectedly encountered her. For reasons he couldn't quite articulate, he found that each time he saw her, she appeared more radiant, making it increasingly difficult for him to tear his gaze away.
When she wasn't present, he could manage his thoughts, but upon seeing her again, he realized the futility of his self-deception.
In that moment, witnessing her gentle smile amidst the gathering crowd filled him with a profound sense of contentment, as if all his burdens had suddenly lifted.
"Guan Qingshu," a voice interjected, as someone stepped to his side. "Do not forget that she is married."
Guan Qingshu averted his gaze and glanced at the person beside him. "I am aware. I have no intention of disturbing her."
"However, staring at her so intently could potentially tarnish her reputation," Yang Rusong sighed regretfully. "If only you had exercised more discretion in the past."
"Are all the townsfolk not watching her right now?" Guan Qingshu countered, a bitter smile playing on his lips inwardly. Yes, had he foreseen the pain he would experience today, he would have cherished her, kept her close, and her smile would have eternally been his. But alas...
"You..."
Ignoring the comment, Guan Qingshu began to walk forward.
"Do not blame me if I fail to warn you," Yang Rusong said, quickly grasping Guan Qingshu's arm. "If you wish for her to acknowledge you, you must conceal your true feelings. Otherwise..."
"I understand," Guan Qingshu replied, shaking off the other man's hand. "I do not ask for much now, merely for the opportunity to hold a calm conversation when we meet. It is the first day of the Lunar New Year, should townspeople not exchange pleasantries?" He knew he ought to turn and leave, yet his legs seemed rooted to the spot.
"You..." Yang Rusong frowned, then stamped his foot in frustration before hurrying to catch up with him.
