Guan Qingshu confronts his sister about her jealousy of Yang Ruxin's popularity, while Yang Ruxin is interrupted during lunch by news that her aunt, Yang Baihe, is threatening suicide by cleaver over a broken engagement. The family rushes to the scene to find Yang Baihe holding a cleaver and threatening everyone.

"So what if you're a scholar?" Guan Qingshu stayed utterly calm. He'd pored over countless books, encountered plenty, and his horizons had expanded widely. There was no chance he'd flare up over something as insignificant as face.

"You're a scholar now, basically an official. Yet no one's rushing to butter us up..." Guan Qingyue brimmed with bitterness.

"Guan Qingyue." Guan Qingshu set his book aside and gazed at her gravely. "What kind of nonsense occupies your mind all day?"

"I..."

"What have you ever done for the villagers? Why would they fawn over you? What benefit do they get from it?"

"You're the village's one and only scholar. You've brought honor to all of us."

"Can honor fill your stomach?"

"But what does Yang Ruxin even possess? How come everyone's groveling to her? She..."

"Yang Ruxin has fed the villagers, stuffed silver into their pockets, and offered them a real shot at survival!" Guan Qingshu's face hardened further. "Why wouldn't folks fawn over a person like her? If they tried fawning on you, would you greet them with a smile?"

Guan Qingyue parted her lips, yet no comeback came out.

Guan Qingshu shot a look at his sister, held his tongue, and resumed reading his book, knowing further words would fall on deaf ears.

Come noon, with extra folks at home, they divided into three tables. Masters and servants alike packed in together, feasting with lively cheer.

Right in the middle of the meal, a figure burst through the door from outside: "Xinxin, trouble's brewing—you need to see this!" Yet they were halted before drawing near.

"What's happened?" Yang Ruxin stared in astonishment at Feng Caie dashing up, spatula in hand, flour dusting her cheeks, and bits of dry straw tangled in her hair.

"Your aunt... Yang Baihe's attempting suicide, and nobody can hold her back. Your grandpa flew into such a rage he coughed up blood..." Feng Caie ignored the gawking crowd. "Your second uncle's been slashed too, and Rusong sent me to fetch you..." Panic twisted her features.

"What's all this commotion about?" Dong Wenxiu scowled. "Such a pain." She turned to Feng Caie. "If there's trouble, fetch the village chief Lizheng. Our Xinxin isn't up for it." After all, Xinxin was with child, and stress wouldn't do.

"Mom, let me go take a look." Yang Ruxin rose to her feet. "It's no big deal."

"I'll come along."

"Sister-in-law, stay put. I'll go with Xinxin." Yang Baixiang dismissed it with a wave. "You'd only end up fuming if you went."

Dong Wenxiu didn't push it.

"Count me in." Xu Zhengya hopped up eagerly. "Xinxin, I'm good at throwing punches."

"Leave any actual brawling to me." Du Juan eyed Xu Zhengya. "You'd just make things worse."

Xu Zhengya went quiet at once. Fine, she fancied her own martial skills, but next to the pros surrounding Yang Ruxin, she amounted to zilch.

Over at the Yang family's old residence, pandemonium ruled. Yang Peili slumped against the doorpost, supported by Yang Rusong, as Yang Baichuan nursed a wounded arm while shielding his baby boy with the other.

Yang Ruohuai looked ashen from fear but held back his tears.

Meanwhile, Yang Baihe rampaged in the yard, brandishing a cleaver and yelling, "Cancel the engagement, or I'll end it all right here!"

"Yang Baihe, won't you quit this insanity?" Yang Rusong appeared utterly drained. "You..."

Villagers gathered round were urging her this way and that, each with their own agendas clashing in a noisy barrage.

"Utter another word, and I'll take you all down before I go!" Yang Baihe refused every plea thrown her way.
