Yang Rusong convinced his parents, Yang Baichuan and Feng Caie, to prove their sincerity through diligent self-reliance, aiming to gain healing from eldest cousin Yang Ruxin. The family launched an intense house cleaning effort before the new year, working from dawn until exhaustion for two straight days. Lazy daughter Yang Baihe was forced to chop wood and sweep the yard to earn her food. Yang Ruxin, informed of their changes, admired Yang Rusong's clear-headed determination and hoped he would pursue an official career.

After merely three days, Yang Peili could already rise and move about slowly.

Being a man, Yang Ruxin arranged for Li Datou and Uncle Laokuang to alternate in assisting him, such as helping change his clothes and escorting him to the outhouse.

"Thanks for the trouble." Back from the outhouse, Yang Peili rinsed his hands and climbed onto the kang, shooting a grateful look at Uncle Laokuang.

"Uncle, no need to be so formal." Uncle Laokuang chuckled while adding a scoop of coal to the stove, "I owe all I have today to Xinxin, who didn’t turn away from my bad luck, or else I wouldn’t be here now."

Yang Peili dropped his gaze, staying silent.

Uncle Laokuang eyed Yang Peili and passed him the herbal soup brought from the kitchen. "Uncle, I’m an outsider, but we’ve known each other for decades. Let me speak frankly: Uncle, you’re truly muddle-headed."

Yang Peili nibbled his chapped lips, raised his head with a wry smile, and replied, "I know, but it’s too late for regrets now."

Uncle Laokuang watched Yang Peili in this state, at a loss for words, and could only sigh, "But Song Ge’er is a good one, so your future won’t be too miserable."

Yang Peili nodded, "Yes, I’ve got no face left to beg forgiveness from Xinxin’s family."

"Even if it offends you, I must warn you: don’t spoil that little daughter of yours."

Yang Peili lifted his eyes in shock, then let out a sigh, "Laokuang, tell me straight, are the villagers mocking me?"

Uncle Laokuang could only let out two awkward chuckles, unsure how to respond.

Yang Peili didn’t press on, as the truth was plain. He’d asked earlier despite discarding his old dignity: "Forget it, I get it deep down. Back then, I obsessed over face, but the Yang Family lost it long ago."

"Uncle, it’s good you see it now." Uncle Laokuang smiled.

"But my grandkids won’t even acknowledge me anymore." Yang Peili murmured, a touch aggrieved as tears trickled down his cheeks.

"Xinxin has the softest heart; she was just utterly disheartened before. You know the burdens she bore propping up this family? Us villagers felt our hearts ache watching it."

Yang Peili simply wiped his tears, speechless from shame.

"Rest up first. I’ll check the livestock out back and return soon." Uncle Laokuang sighed and rose to his feet.

In the courtyard, Feng Zilan approached just then, spotted Uncle Laokuang, and smiled, "How’s the old man faring?"

Seeing Feng Zilan, Uncle Laokuang grew a bit flustered, fidgeting with his hands: "Um... um, he’s doing well."

"That’s good." Feng Zilan nodded, "The kitchen prepared some bone broth; take a bowl to him shortly."

"Okay." Uncle Laokuang nodded.

Feng Zilan smiled and turned to depart.

Uncle Laokuang let out a relieved breath, though her presence always left him tense, his heart racing wildly almost to suffocation.

Yang Ruxin, watching from upstairs, had eyes that flickered thoughtfully. So Uncle Laokuang likes Mother-in-law? These two... good people both, and if they could pair up and live together, that’d be wonderful.

"Madam, what scheme are you hatching now?" Du Juan stood beside Yang Ruxin, puzzled by her cryptic smile.

Yang Ruxin glanced back at her, "I was thinking, how about getting Brother Yunpeng a concubine?"
