Inside the kitchen.
Dong Wenxiu, Feng Zilan, plus several Kou Family members were busy preparing wontons.
Dong Wenxiu sighed, “The people from the old house came to cause a fuss once, and it actually stopped Xinxin from feeling nauseous. For that, I won’t blame them this time.”
Feng Zilan chuckled lightly, “Yes, we won’t blame them.”
“Granny Huang, go see if the old man from the Yang Family has woken up yet. If he has, bring him some food.” Dong Wenxiu directed the woman next to her, “Also ask if Xinxin has any food restrictions.”
“Don’t worry, Xinxin has everything sorted out already, so no need for you to fret,” Granny Huang replied with a quick nod.
Feng Zilan shook her head helplessly. Dong Wenxiu’s soft-hearted nature really couldn’t be altered.
Before, Yang Ruxin suffered from intense morning sickness that had everyone anxious. If it lasted eight or nine months, how would they manage? With this sudden improvement, naturally, relief and joy filled the air for all.
Yang Ruxin felt delighted too. Eating comfortably beat retching until bile rose any day.
“Eldest Sister,” Erni sighed toward Yang Ruxin, “You couldn’t stomach a thing at first, not even water without throwing up. Now all of a sudden, you’re devouring food non-stop; isn’t it odd?”
“I agree.” Yang Ruxin nodded as she slurped wontons, “But it’s beyond my control.” She patted her belly, “I suspect a little demon inside was making a statement to its mom initially.”
Erni burst into giggles.
“Hand me that mung bean cake.” Yang Ruxin pointed to the dessert plate after polishing off the wontons.
Erni passed the plate, “These pastries might make you thirsty though, so don’t overdo it.”
Yang Ruxin nodded, ate two pieces, then grew sleepy, “Time for a quick nap.”
Back in her room alone, Yang Ruxin naturally pulled out fruits and snacks from her storage space for yet another round of eating.
Currently, no one could access the space to plant or raise more, but thankfully, their prior stockpiles were plentiful enough to last years.
Still, Yang Ruxin worried. What if she never reentered the space? Supplies would eventually dwindle. Thus, speeding up the orchards and herb fields outside became essential.
Over at the Yang Family’s old house:
Yang Rusong perched on a chair in the main hall, gazing at his parents, “Do you know why I’ve quit the imperial exams?”
Yang Baichuan and Feng Caie stared at their oldest son in shock and shook their heads.
“It’s not due to poor studies, but our family’s mess.” Yang Rusong sighed deeply, “I doubt I could even sign up, since my father got crippled by his brother over a woman dispute, my mother’s known for being cruel and irrational, and worst, my little brother stirs endless chaos…” He halted, “Given that, would the Imperial Court take me? Truth is, I inquired at the town school, yet no one wants me teaching.”
“Brother Song…” Yang Baichuan’s lips trembled faintly.
“At times I ponder, how did such parents end up mine?” Yang Rusong sneered, “No escaping it though. I’ve tried my utmost. Cause more trouble if you must. My cousin once remarked, ‘A loving mother inspires filial children; the example set at the top trickles down. Loving parents naturally lead to filial children, but if parents are terrible, why should children be filial?’ I once deemed her unlearned, but now it clicks. I even respect her boldness.”
