Gu Yao apologizes to Erni for worrying her and carries her away wrapped in a cloak amid Yang Ruxin's teasing. Alone, Yang Ruxin touches her pregnant belly, yearning for Gu Qingheng and wondering his reaction to fatherhood. At the Nanzhao border camp, Gu Qingheng receives her letter via Heihei, slaps the table in joy, and shares the news with Gu Qiao, feeling guilty for his absence while praising his wife.

Gu Qiao's lips twitched. Is this truly the eldest young master of the household? Why does he come across as... I've heard pregnancy makes women foolish for three years, but that's meant for women, correct? Why does the young master seem foolish himself?

"You need to get moving," Gu Qingheng went on advising Gu Qiao, "Ruxin mentioned that marrying late will hold back the child's education. Haha, I'll become a father next year..."

Gu Qiao tilted his head toward the sky, rendered speechless.

"And the rest of you," Gu Qingheng whirled to speak to those nearby, "you ought to rush and tie the knot too."

Shadow Six and Shadow Eight nearby had no choice but to gaze at the sky right then. The young master appeared utterly bewitched.

"Quick, fetch some food for me, your elder—I'm famished." Abruptly, someone dashed inside and thudded onto a chair, "Pour me a cup of water first."

All present breathed sighs of relief; the Divine Doctor elder showed up perfectly timed, saving them from more scoldings by the General.

"Elder." Delight lit up Gu Qingheng's face as he stepped closer, "Ruxin is with child."

"Pregnant? That's perfectly ordinary, no?" Dao Xuzi cast a sidelong look at Gu Qingheng, "You're no eunuch—failing to sire kids would be strange." He flicked his hand, "Fast, get the water and serve the meal."

Gu Qiao and the others' mouth corners spasmed while they fought down chuckles.

Somewhat irritated, Gu Qingheng rubbed his nose. The old fellow lacked charm, yet he promptly fetched water, offered it, and directed Gu Qiao to ready the dishes.

Long Qia, who had arrived with Dao Xuzi, came in and gave his salutes as well. Trailing them were two owls, the younger siblings of Xiaohei, christened Crack and Pop by Yang Ruxin.

Conditions in the army camp were modest, yet Gu Qiao diligently assembled the finest feast available for the elder, adding a jug of wine too.

"What's the state of affairs here?" Dao Xuzi questioned as he ate.

"Casualties have been heavy here; for now, battle is impossible. Fortunately, the foe has stayed idle these past days," Gu Qingheng sighed, "Still, batches of scouts dispatched brought back zero worthwhile news."

"Mere idiots," Dao Xuzi shot Gu Qingheng yet another side-eye.

Gu Qingheng offered only a bitter smile; clearly, in the elder's view, solely his spouse possessed wits.

"I've eaten my fill," Dao Xuzi set down his utensils and rose, "Prepare a tent for me, your elder—time to rest."

Gu Qingheng had planned to inquire whether the elder might treat patients, but held his tongue, merely assigning someone to set up the tent.

Long Qia blinked: "Elder, there's still..."

"Why prattle on?" Dao Xuzi scowled at Long Qia.

Long Qia reluctantly sealed his lips.

Dao Xuzi strode swiftly from the tent then, off to his slumber.

In the meantime, Gu Qingheng peered at the golden snake looped about his wrist, a grin breaking free despite himself.

"You foul snake, sneaking away alone like that?" Dao Xuzi popped back suddenly after exiting the tent, "What's amiss with trailing your elder? You ungrateful..."

Gold rolled its eyes and gripped Gu Qingheng’s wrist tighter; Ruxin ordered me to remain guarding her husband. You're no husband to Ruxin, so why tag along? Moreover, Tiantian keeps drawing my venom every time you're present, which annoys me greatly.
