“Xuexue?” Gu Yao creased his brow. “What’s the matter with you?”
“Brother Ayao, my birthday falls on the eighteenth of the first month. By my reckoning, it’s just over a month until I reach adulthood.” Erni abruptly took charge, her hand stretching out to pull at his undergarments. “We’re married now, so we must consummate properly. Take me.”
“Xuexue, stop this.” Gu Yao swiftly drew her close into his embrace, holding her still. “Settle down.”
Tears nevertheless poured down Erni’s cheeks: “I know you plan to head south for brother-in-law, yet if you truly leave, you won’t return by my coming-of-age day—and it’s war out there. I’m terrified.” With King Yun captured, she dreaded disasters striking brother-in-law and Brother Ayao too. She had to surrender herself to him now, or regret would haunt her forever.
Gu Yao’s heart twisted in agony. Back when he marched to battle, she’d wed him young, offering solace amid chaos, and he’d selfishly accepted since she’d captured his affections. All these years, she’d waited loyally for him.
Should he venture south again, dare he remain so self-centered? No. If death claimed him, he’d at least grant her a pure path ahead; his sister-in-law’s skills would surely match her with a worthy husband.
Thus, even with a month remaining before her maturity—or if she’d reached it today—he refused to claim her fully.
No more selfishness from him.
“Big sister is with child.” Erni sniffled against Gu Yao’s chest. “Brother Ayao, I crave your baby too. Even without you later, I’d have reason to endure…”
“Xuexue.” Gu Yao rubbed his chin tenderly on Erni’s forehead. “You silly thing.” He yearned to seek Gu Qingheng southward, yet now words failed him. “Rest now.”
Erni longed to protest but held back, merely curling silently into Gu Yao’s arms until sleep overtook her unawares.
Come morning, Erni awoke to an empty bedside and jolted in alarm. She leaped up and dashed outside.
“Miss Erni, take it easy! Put on your padded jacket to fend off the chill, and your shoes as well.” Xiaoyun, alerted by the noise, moved to enter just as Erni bolted out with tousled hair. Shocked, she snatched the shoes and cloak, hurrying after her.
Erni raced straight to her sister’s courtyard, charging into the hall moments later. “Big sister, Brother Ayao, he…”
“Xuexue, where are your shoes?” Gu Yao rose quickly and lifted her into his arms. “You’ll freeze in this frigid weather!”
Erni paused briefly, then clung fiercely to Gu Yao’s neck. “I feared you’d departed.”
“Xuexue, your husband holds free status now, with solid rank as a Sixth-rank Assistant Lieutenant of Zhenwei, a proper general.” Yang Ruxin smiled lightly. “Think he can wander off at will?”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Without an Imperial Court decree, heading to the frontlines on his own means facing impeachment from the Imperial Censor—or treason charges.” Yang Ruxin shot Gu Yao a stern look. “Ayao, didn’t you realize? See how you frightened my little sister?”
