Chapter 2: Getting Beaten_1 Yang Dani cherished a crush on the village boy Guan Qingshu from a young age, solely because she had secretly overheard her father—still alive back then—jokingly mention becoming in-laws someday during a private chat with Guan Qingshu’s father.

As the oldest daughter in the household, she believed this attractive young man was destined to be her spouse.

Thus, she persistently showed him kindness.

Regrettably, after her father’s death, no evidence remained of that talk, and the Guan family refused to accept it.

Guan Qingshu’s mother had even directly cursed Yang Dani as shameless right to her face.

Guan Qingshu himself felt only irritation every time he spotted Yang Dani.

Nevertheless, Yang Dani stayed headstrong.

Once she fixed her heart on a goal, she refused to yield even against a solid wall, let alone from curses or beatings.

On this occasion, while hauling wheat straw for others, she slipped into a ditch and perished with a sharp cry.

“Who would have imagined I’d end up as such a lovesick idiot!” Yang Ruxin whispered to herself, lips curling in bitter self-mockery, before letting out an involuntary sigh.

Yang Dani, oh Yang Dani, your unyielding nature ultimately claimed your life, she reflected inwardly.

For a fleeting instant, she pondered whether Guan Qingshu, hearing news of Yang Dani’s passing, might experience even the slightest remorse.

“Really acting like some delicate young miss, eh?

A little stroll and you collapse from a tiny tumble?” Abruptly, waves of harsh tirades floated in sporadically from outside, “Even bold enough to pilfer food now… lazy slacker… what good are you?

Might as well finish you all off…”

“Mother, Dani skipped breakfast entirely, toiling all morning, and fainted only after bumping her head,” a weak woman’s voice pleaded from nearby, “It’s scorching hot today; please allow me to cook her some porridge, just once, I implore you.”

“So you claim I’m starving her?

Huh?

All she does is devour food—is she a starving ghost reborn?” The retort came back fiercer still, “Eats nonstop every day, you’ve drained our family dry… Feeding you is worse than a dog…” The tone escalated wildly, “A dog at least watches the home—what use are you?

Daring to sass your elders now?

You’re a cursed jinx, fit only to be beaten dead…” Slapping noises ensued, followed by muffled sobs from a woman.

“Grandma, spare Mother please,” a childish voice interjected, “I vow to labor even harder ahead; Sister desperately needs food right now.”

“Grandma, I’ll toil more too…” piped up an even tinier voice.

“Scram…” The elderly woman’s screech spiked suddenly, “Pack of jinxes, money pits… sight of you drives me mad with rage…”

Soon, children’s wails filled the air.

“Wail once more and I’ll thrash you fatal, cry your fill in one go…” The bellow roared anew, “Scream your lungs out…” Then repeated thwacks rang out, as if an object pounded flesh.

“Mother, stop hitting the kids,” Yang Xu’s wife sobbed while knocking her head on the ground, “I beg you… blame me alone… strike me instead… I took that half-bowl of rice…”

“Oh dear, big sister, what’s with all the tears?

Making it look like Mother’s tormenting you,” a sharper, piercing voice joined in, “Remember September’s coming—Rusong’s field entry awaits.

This sobbing and howling brings nothing but doom?

Whatever scant luck our home holds, your crying scares it off.”
