Book 25 - Rebirth in Blood
The boundless stream of Cain's Primordial Essence surged through the infinite flow that permeated every corner of existence. He had merged into The Flow itself.
A profound wave of oneness and linkage overwhelmed his consciousness and sense of self, an experience so immense and deep that words failed to capture it. All elements intertwined—each law, every entity, every shard of reality tied by an unseen rhythm. Although the sensation proved utterly sublime, it carried a terrifying edge as well.
With all his resolve and grit, Cain fought to preserve his core identity.
His goal was to blend seamlessly with The Flow, uniting with the perpetual stream linking every aspect of reality—yet he refused to let it swallow him whole. Naturally, such a feat sounded simple in theory but proved brutally challenging in practice.
"Balance holds the secret," Cain told himself inwardly. "I must link up without getting devoured."
The Scarlet King's gaze blazed with intensity as he channeled all his strength into the struggle, but progress eluded him. His thoughts refused to adjust to this realm. For a being weighed down by endless ambitions, duties, and anxieties, achieving equilibrium in such a void seemed utterly unattainable.
Fear and terror crept into Cain's eyes as awareness dawned that he was slipping away. Fragments of his being started to come undone. His unique self faded, his mind's threads tearing as though yanked by some hidden current.
Right when the descent neared an irreversible brink, his vision blurred into emptiness.
Disarray and bewilderment flickered there—only to give way
to pure joy and infinite serenity.
No concerns lingered.
No pressures weighed.
No ambitions drove.
Reason had vanished.
The past held no grip on Cain, nor did the future occupy his thoughts. In his perception, they simply weren't there. Only the now and the encompassing flow mattered to him. All else faded into irrelevance.
The curse!
That same curse which had shattered his reason right before his breakout from the World Forge—that very force unlocked the way.
Through the loss of his sanity, by channeling every bit of his being into the instant, forsaking history and tomorrow, the Scarlet King finally synced with The Flow.
In that condition, he linked to the eternal stream weaving all reality without forfeiting his essence. The lines separating his physical shape from the stream dissolved, but no breakdown occurred, no dissolution of his core.
He stayed intact.
Simultaneously, his power swelled.
The Flow's might surged over him, purging his soul and core of all curses and imprints forced upon them. His Primordial Essence sharpened, becoming cleaner and steadier with every instant.
As Cain glided along the ceaseless stream, his form abruptly arrived at a junction.
Three routes appeared ahead.
Even sans reason, Cain retained the ability to pick a basic direction.
One route looped back on itself, trapping his essence in an endless cycle right there. The second climbed high, and upon sensing it, a red glow pulsed from its core.
The third plunged below.
An eerie, shadowy force cloaked it, thick and mighty.
In his altered mindset, Cain couldn't tell virtue from vice, correct from incorrect. But power he could feel. And of the trio, the lower path radiated a presence vastly superior to the rest.
He selected it without pause.
During the plunge, a rush of life and clarity burst from his being. The Flow kept purifying him, erasing every leftover curse and brand. His core lightened, liberated, free from chains.
Only after venturing deep along that route did clarity and logic start creeping back into his gaze.
In a twist of fate, the instant they resurfaced, alarm sparked within.
His final memory was of his whole self disintegrating, his personal identity teetering on total erasure. That abrupt jolt threw his bond with The Flow into turmoil, almost shattering the fragile sync he'd forged.
Luckily, Cain responded in a flash.
He silenced every notion.
He slipped back into the blank, aloof mindset that had enabled
his initial merging. Gradually, steadiness reasserted, and the link evened out again.
Not until he confirmed full steadiness did Cain permit ideas to rise once more.
A broad grin lit his features.
"I pulled it off."
The declaration echoed in his thoughts, as he wouldn't squander even a moment. Cain poured his focus into decoding his merged state. Until he commanded it completely, he wouldn't budge an inch. Losing that poise before true control meant he'd never reclaim it—and death would follow.
Days slipped by.
Cain kept drifting with the stream, venturing further into The Flow's depths. At length, a scowl creased his brow. He had zero clue about his direction.
Myriad forces surrounded him—principles and strengths alien to both the Nine Empyrean Suns Universe and the Crimson World. They struck as foreign, strange, and immense beyond comprehension.
"No matter where this leads..."
The thrill of discovery tempted, even stirred him, yet Cain recalled his obligations. Family, comrades, and troops relied on him. Unknown perils could lurk at journey's end.
"Is this the Tenth Empyrean World?"
He dismissed the notion at once.
Cain had glimpsed the principles and codes of his fiercest foes' realm previously, and nothing aligned here.
"This realm is entirely new to me."
Ultimately, Cain could only exhale in resignation.
Pending full command of merging, he had no choice but to ride the current. Moreover, merging marked just one phase; a vital final step awaited.
And Cain trusted in his triumph.
More days flowed as he delved ever further into the void, bathed solely in light—until finally, another presence started to appear.
