Riley tricks Orien into admitting he needs to talk to his parents, which leads to a tearful family reunion. Afterwards, Riley and Kael head off to their private quarters, implying they will be spending some time together.

It may be hard to believe right now, but one black dragon would like everyone to know that, on most days and occasions, they were actually people who understood the definition of self-control.

And as impossible as that might sound amidst all the frantic kissing and rather unconvincing squelching, they were, for the most part, well-regulated adults who made sure to maintain a healthy amount of intimacy even during the most difficult of times.

Most importantly, Riley Hale Dravaryn would like to warn everyone that there may be situations when either of them looked particularly pitiful, despondent, or downright desperate, but rest assured, they weren’t nearly as deprived as they made themselves out to be.

They were, however, both a bit and happened to be insanely insatiable...

If only one sulking golden dragon would acknowledge that particular fact.

Then maybe he wouldn’t have spent the moments before they were finally alone looking like someone had personally wronged him.

Well, it wasn’t as though Kael was truly pissed.

All things considered, this was the best outcome they could’ve possibly hoped for. His mate was alive and well, their entire family had managed to weather the trials, and they’d even found his deranged cousin in time to finally reunite that little pea’s family.

As for everyone else?

Those who deserved it were currently getting what was coming to them, while Wyrmfall itself would likely undergo some much-needed rehabilitation now that its leylines were finally being reorganized.

In a sense, that was precisely why Kael was annoyed at himself for being so unreasonable.

Everything had worked out remarkably well, yet the moment he laid eyes on his mate, all he’d wanted to do was monopolize him like someone who’d never heard of propriety or self-control.

But could anyone really blame him when the golden dragon was certain everyone else wanted Riley too?

Perhaps not in exactly the same way.

There were those tiny but formidable competitors who insisted on sticking to his twig even when they clearly had better things to do, while all sorts of unnecessary beings seemed determined to get their hands on his mate’s power.

Worse, his mate had always been far too nice for his own good. It was something anyone else, particularly those currently wallowing in their worst nightmares, would probably refuse to believe, but in the dragon lord’s mind, this was the absolute truth.

Left entirely to his own devices, his mate would probably continue allowing all sorts of flies to buzz around them and bother him.

So yes, Kael remained incredibly conflicted even as he strode past the tempting bed and headed toward the grand bath, with his only consolation being the realization that Riley apparently intended to spend considerably more time alone with him.

Now, all he needed to do was convince his mate that perhaps spending at least a year holed up together would be perfectly advi—

Kael’s thoughts were abruptly interrupted when a heavy wave of mana suddenly radiated from somewhere beside him.

More specifically, straight from his mate.

"...?"

The golden dragon immediately looked over.

Riley had lowered himself to the ground and was already in the middle of casting an intricate runic circle. One glance was enough for Kael to recognize it as a high-grade barrier, leaving him wondering what on Eryndra his mate needed something like that for.

But before he could ask, Riley’s eyes shifted into sharp slits.

Those distinct emerald eyes locked directly onto his own, and in the next instant, Kael nearly forgot how to breathe.

"!"

"What—"

A wave of pure, unadulterated desire slammed into him like a dam breaking wide open.

Riley had intentionally lowered his personal barriers, the very same ones he’d maintained since they shifted out of their full dragon forms to prevent everyone around them from being overwhelmed by their presence.

Now, with the high-grade barrier surrounding them instead, there was no longer any reason to hold back.

And through their mating bond, Kael suddenly felt

Riley wasn’t masking a single thing.

Desire so intense it almost felt tangible poured through their connection, catching the dragon lord so completely off guard that his knees nearly buckled. The black dragon standing before him was practically itching to devour him, staring up at Kael with an expression so beautifully and dangerously resolute that his back ended up pressed flat against the nearest wall.

Unbeknownst to the golden dragon, heat had already flooded his face and neck, spreading rapidly across the rest of his body as Riley’s overwhelming pheromones saturated the air around them.

"Since earlier," Riley murmured, his voice low and raspy.

"...?"

Kael could only stare.

Riley never looked away as the ethereal clothes covering his body, woven entirely from those strange threads of mana, slowly began dissolving. Light peeled away from him before being reabsorbed into his skin while the dense steam rising from the grand bath temporarily obscured his changing silhouette.

"It’s been like this since earlier," Riley continued. "Between the two of us, shouldn’t I be the one sulking? I wanted to be taken the second I woke up."

A soft breeze swept through the room.

The steam parted.

And Kael found himself staring, utterly stunned, at his mate’s completely bare body.

"But it seems I’m the only one...?" Riley added, his voice trailing off with a wistful, almost embarrassed edge.

There he stood in all his naked glory, making absolutely no effort to conceal the raw hunger radiating from his core.

The stunned golden dragon couldn’t believe what was happening.

And yet, any desire to simply bask in the thought of his mate wanting him so badly quickly gave way to concern. Because how could Riley possibly think he was the only one?!

The realization had the normally unfazed dragon scrambling to say something, except he couldn’t seem to find any words capable of expressing just how fundamentally wrong Riley was.

He was still trying to figure out exactly how to explain just how eager he’d been when a firm hand latched onto the front of his robes and hauled him down.

Kael’s upper body pitched forward until their faces were suddenly far too close, forcing the much taller dragon to bend toward his mate.

Riley stared directly into his eyes.

"Can’t you show me too?"

Kael stilled.

Being asked to do something so risky was daunting, though certainly not because he feared what it might do to himself.

He feared what it might do to Riley. Ever since that day he’d finally gotten a taste of him, Kael’s desire had only continued to mount until it reached levels even he wasn’t sure were entirely proper.

But now, rather than simply being given permission, he was being encouraged.

Then again, perhaps that was only because Riley didn’t truly understand just how bad it had gotten.

A dragon’s full, unbridled affection, especially from one who had never understood the mortal concept of moderation, could be frighteningly greedy.

Greedy enough that even the most beautiful gift could end up completely tattered beneath it.

Kael understood that now. After everything he’d witnessed, particularly what that woman had done for her mate, he’d seen firsthand just how destructive that kind of love could become when taken too far.

And yet Riley was asking for all of it?

Kael searched his mate’s face for even the slightest hint of fear.

He found none, but Riley seemed to sense his lingering hesitation anyway. His fingers tightened around Kael’s robes, pulling him even closer.

"I want it all. Kael, we didn’t go through all that hell for me to regain this body just so we could build blocks and play house."

His dark emerald eyes flashed before he leaned closer to Kael’s ear.

"Not even to keep Eryndra safe for the foreseeable future," Riley whispered. "No. This is so you can take me however you want, and in turn, I can indulge every single one of deranged fantasies."

Only after saying that did Riley notice the thin trail of blood slipping from Kael’s nose.

Ah.

He raised his thumb and gently wiped it away, while his bewildered husband himself apparently hadn’t even realized it was there.

Then Riley tilted his face upward and pressed his lips firmly against Kael’s.

That was it.

The golden dragon broke.

Every restraint and barrier he’d painstakingly built around his monstrous desire since regaining consciousness shattered at once.

The relief was almost dizzying.

Like finally exhaling after being trapped underwater for far too long, the golden dragon stopped fighting against something that had been suffocating him from the moment he woke.

A powerful wave of his pheromones immediately flooded the lagoon, spreading through the humid air as though hell-bent on finding Riley’s own and mixing with them.

Kael’s broad hand shot forward, sliding up to cup the back of Riley’s neck, his fingers threading through soft hair and locking him firmly in place. He deepened the kiss with an intense, ravenous hunger, plundering his mate’s mouth in a hot, breathless clash that left Riley visibly shaken.

Sliding his other hand down low, Kael possessively cupped the full, soft curve of Riley’s bare rear. His heavy fingers kneaded the tender flesh with searing pressure, slowly parting him as he pulled Riley completely flush against his burning, rigid body.

It was Kael’s silent, agonizingly intimate way of giving Riley one final chance to change his mind, his touch lingering as though waiting for even the slightest sign of hesitation.

Instead, Riley reacted as though he’d been waiting for this exact moment all along.

Without a trace of uncertainty, he wrapped his arms tightly around Kael’s neck and pulled him impossibly closer, a loud, yearning moan spilling from his throat directly into Kael’s mouth.

At this point, Eryndra better find a way to support itself, because not even the gods would be able to stop them now.
