The Conquerors Path Chapter 984 - 982-Just A Rest.

Previously on The Conquerors Path...
While Austin remains in a mysterious coma following a display of overwhelming power, his family and allies are consumed by guilt and a thirst for vengeance. Eleanor and Grace keep a tireless vigil by his side, while Mira oversees the brutal interrogation of those responsible for the recent attack. Unbeknownst to them, Austin is secretly awake and mobile, having faked his unconscious state to move freely during the chaos and avoid the consequences of his actions. After revealing the ruse to a few trusted confidants, he infiltrates the Darknight headquarters to regroup with Ralph and a distraught Athena. With the War Council in shambles, Austin prepares to exploit the growing instability to further his own hidden agenda.

"So what happened?"

Ralph inquired while we all took our seats, him sitting opposite me, and Athena positioned right next to me, checking to confirm I was okay. The ordeal had scared her considerably, which is why I permitted her to remain by my side.

"It's complicated. I had to flip all the major levers when events unfolded this way."

With that, I began recounting the full story to Ralph, starting from the initial circumstances, covering every detail up to the conclusion, organizing all the elements in a clear sequence. As I continued explaining, it became evident how astonished both of them were by the developments.

Even so, I avoided diving too deeply into the chaos, instead presenting it all with the essential facts that could prove useful.

"And then, I employed a unique technique to make it seem like I was still sleeping as I hurried back here. I required some downtime. Besides, you grasp why I must appear asleep, don't you?"

My statement prompted Ralph to nod in agreement. Being intelligent individuals, the pair quickly realized that my actions represented the most practical step to minimize any severe retaliation.

"So your family believes you're still out cold?"

Ralph questioned, arching an eyebrow, and I could merely shake my head while letting out a sigh.

"It has to be this way. Authenticity is key for it to succeed. Otherwise, complications would pile up. Moreover, this safeguards them, despite the pain it causes me to see them anxious."

A somber look crossed my face as I mentioned this, appearing genuinely tormented by the necessity of such a deception.

"Don't fret, you'll have company through this period. You've got me, and the rest of us too. You're doing this for their protection as well. No need to carry excessive guilt."

Athena comforted, her hand gently stroking my back to ease my tension, her features showing a mix of empathy and care as she drew me nearer, embracing me more firmly. In that moment, her ample bosom pressed against me, and simultaneously, my shadowy impulses stirred, yearning to tear into her and claim her boldly in Ralph's presence.

To twist this pure affection into a shadowed indulgence that could feed my cravings, yet I restrained that urge with my rational side, maintaining control. I couldn't afford to slip now, especially since betraying Ralph in that manner was unthinkable. Thus, I suppressed those impulses and sentiments deep within, although my awareness still detected the hidden yearnings and shifts in Ralph as well.

I shoved that corrupting influence aside once more, ignoring its tempting murmurs urging me to manipulate the concealed passions of these two. Deep down, everyone harbors illicit longings. Often, they stay unfulfilled and sealed away. Countless people pass without ever exploring those facets, but I possess the means to unleash them. At present, however, I refuse to wield that against those who truly value me.

The most insidious aspect was the voice from that darker part insisting I was merely freeing them, that fulfillment of their wants would bring them joy in every sense. Still, I recognized that tugging at that thread would lead to a steep descent into darkness, so I fought to stay grounded and dismissed those notions.

"Thanks, your words have lifted my spirits a little."

I replied to that, then shifted my gaze to Ralph as I continued.

"I craved a respite from the constant scrutiny as Austin Lionheart, forever in the spotlight. Additionally, this setup lets me handle various matters that demand attention."

"You're referring to the war council matter, aren't you?"

In response to Ralph's query, I affirmed with a nod.

"Exactly, isn't this the ideal time to act? Their standing has hit rock bottom, and chaos reigns everywhere. A complete overhaul could even sweep through the war council. We can capitalize on this turmoil to seize what I desire."

"More influence."

I confirmed Ralph's words with another nod. As the saying goes, the surest method to dismantle foes is from within. Gradually and relentlessly, I'll erode their authority until they're forced to yield; by the moment they move against me, I'll hold the reins entirely. And posing as Rex, I understand the optimal routes to forge those initial links.

Now's the moment to deploy all my accumulated skills and talents to gain entry into that realm.

"Shh... everyone. Austin's just returned exhausted. He deserves rest and a hearty meal from his big sister!"

"You nailed it."

I responded, drawing a grin from Athena as she rose and tugged me along.

"Follow me, the little ones have been longing for you. You can spend time with them while I prepare something to eat."

With her leading me by the hand, I glanced back at Ralph and silently signaled.

Ralph acknowledged with a nod as Athena dragged me off determinedly, guiding me inside where I encountered Aria and Josh; the young children's faces brightened instantly upon spotting me.

"Big brother!"

They cried out, dashing toward me and wrapping me in hugs. A warm smile formed on my lips as I tousled their hair, before we dove into games together, while Athena headed off to fix the meal. Rest wasn't truly necessary for me, but unwinding like this proved refreshing and joyful all the same.

So, I embraced the moment, enjoying playtime with the children, who relished my company as we frolicked about. The fascinating thing was how neither Ralph nor Athena probed why I'd snuck up behind them undetected. They simply embraced the secret, that I'd bypassed all barriers to conceal myself among them.

In truth, after learning of my exploits in thrashing the Imperials, the idea of me materializing behind them lost much of its enigma. I chuckled inwardly at the notion, then devoted the following hour to fun with the kids until weariness overtook them and they dozed off against me.

A profound smile graced my features as I caressed the heads of the slumbering children. That's when Athena came back, her countenance blooming into a broad grin at the sight of me with them, her gaze softening tenderly as she said.

"Let's go, dinner's ready. The kids can eat when they wake."

With those words, Athena lifted the children effortlessly and carried them to their room, settling them comfortably. Night had fallen by then, significant time elapsed since the chaos, as I proceeded to the dining area. I sat down, with Athena joining shortly after. An array of mouthwatering dishes adorned the table, their aroma utterly inviting.

I savored the scents, inhaling deeply before inquiring.

"Is Ralph off handling duties?"

Athena confirmed with a nod, then elaborated.

"Since your bold move, news of it has exploded everywhere. Shifts in power dynamics and even governmental frameworks are in flux. It's a massive upheaval, so he's occupied with it presently. He mentioned you should proceed with your strategies. Reach out if you require assistance."

I acknowledged with a nod.

"That works. Are the others aware I'm unharmed?"

"Yes, Ralph updated them, and relief washed over the group. They echoed the same sentiment of full backing..."

A smile tugged at my lips as Athena tacked on.

"And they're quietly scheming their own payback as well."

I laughed softly at that before probing.

"Let me guess—they're disseminating the story swiftly across all corners, while undermining their reputation, correct?"

Athena inclined her head in agreement. I noticed her satisfaction with the approach, yet a deeper urge burned in her to inflict greater harm.

"I hope they avoid excess. Though the war council will be too overwhelmed to counter the rumors, toppling them excessively could backfire. They retain immense authority and sway."

"They understand, rest easy."

Athena assured in reply, and with a nod from me, I turned my attention to the meal. Before long, we both delved into eating, enveloped in tranquility. Occasionally, Athena posed queries to verify my state, along with casual inquiries about my daily life and such, which I answered in kind.

The ambiance brimmed with warmth and serenity, and part of me yearned to share such moments with my actual kin, but circumstances demanded this interlude. Navigating shadows freely beats constant surveillance. Once I "awaken," relentless pursuit awaits, so I must maximize this window of freedom.
