The Conquerors Path Chapter 1051 - 1049: Regressors Done!
Previously on The Conquerors Path...
The fight was over. I had moved to a safe place; an anonymous tip to the authorities had brought more scrutiny to the blast, which opened it up to a workplace of the corrupted ones, which brought about bigger waves.
To sum it all up, the blast was huge. It brought a lot of speculation, plus I had run around with Elowen, causing issues against the city and being hunted down by the authorities in question. Of course, the soldiers and the corrupted beings were working hand in hand, the normal corruption where money kinda corrupts you in another way.
The city I was in, you could say it’s more of a low-class small city on the outskirts. The whole of the ocean is huge, HUGE I say, meaning a lot of places to monitor, a lot of places to hide and a lot of situations where corruption can bloom. Especially in places like this, far away yet still a bit important. That’s why dealing with corrupted beings in the ocean is the hardest thing possible.
So much is there that keeping eyes on and weeding this out is the worst. Even then, the ocean is also one of the most sought-after places ever due to the sheer amount of resources we can find there. Unlike the land, the sea is way, way bigger, and let’s say there are several resources which can only be found here, which says a lot.
From what I had gathered, this place, which we destroyed, was quite a bit important to those lurking under the shadow of the brightest light.
Anyhow, when we were being hunted, the ones in authority didn’t know they were supporting corrupted beings at all. They were just leaning more into the cash that was flowing to them and turning a blind eye. So when we blew up the place, they did try to cover it up without knowing what they were covering up.
So I had the more powerful authority handle it. The war council, still existing with their humiliation and problems, swept in faster than ever at the mention of corrupted works happening here. And let’s say from then on, it was quite the dangerous skinning all around.
The tribe that was in control of this section, in which the city lay, came in with their full force. The ones in power were literally skinned alive and tortured. All the ones that took money got into even bigger problems, because when it comes to corrupt dealings, the sea itself has a higher hatred and disdain towards it.
It’s a stigma on their back which resulted from those war years ago. So when someone was involved, it’s bigger news than what you hear on land. Anyhow, deep research was done, and the truth of the research, which was boosted and corrupted with a certain new type, was made public, which became even bigger news and mess.
Corrupted research happening in a city under them?
Is the sea being used for the research?
Yeah.... that was more than a death sentence, that was a kill-you-really-hard sentence. The whole of the sea boards shook like hell, spreading the news far and wide. Whale-like beings, which would crush the entire city with their body waved above it. Beings of untold power, Imperial ranks surfaced in, and the whole city came under lock.
The news of this information made the war council work even harder to settle all of this, right when they were dealing with the other mess I threw them. So overall, it was a big enough hit to shake every major power, especially with the research data on Apex.
The fact that this might be going on in other cities at a smaller level led to a much-needed wake-up call that changed the entire world’s holdings. Sharper reaches, greater attacks. In fact, the data I stole was subtly passed to some of my people, who, taking in the credit, took a greater rise, which resulted in more centres and research institutes being attacked.
This was a substantial hit to them.
Of course, in this research me and Elowen weren’t forgotten at all. After all, how can you forget it after all the chaos we caused?
Even more so, I made sure the story was twisted enough that we were actual heroes in it. The story goes that the two of us, having found the issues, fought around the city to bring this to light, which truly did move hearts. Though nobody knew who the two of us were, it became a big mystery all around.
Doing all this on my own, even with my powers, would have been trouble, but it became a bit easier when I had the divine being of the sea at my side. Her connections and words were way, way more than mine. Thus, Krave settled in hiding what needed to be hidden and bringing to light what should stay.
Nobody was able to identify Elowen or me; that was taken care of. Not even the gambling den and its members, who were suddenly filled with memory loss. No research or magic came back to us, keeping our identities safe.
So left behind were the legends of the woman and young merman, two dynamic comic duo who saved a whole city and left behind no name.
The legends of The Flower and the Fool.
For all they left behind were the flowers; one of them bloomed, and the other acted like a fool.
...
"You really do have some deep connections and powers here."
Elowen said as she took a sip of her drink. I smiled at her words as I leaned back into the seat. Right now, the two of us are sitting in a bar with nobody else, just the two of us. It’s quite the stylish, good-looking bar if I say so myself.
"It’s a lesson I learned. If you want to do good, at times you need a lot of money, power and a mind more dangerous than your enemy."
"I will drink to that."
Elowen said as she took a sip of the drink again. I maintained the smile and leaned in as I asked.
"So? How does the heart feel?"
To which Elowen touched her heart for a moment, still taking a sip. As she took her lips from the drink, a small white covering appeared over her lips as she responded.
"A bit more alive. Since travelling with you, I just feel the depression a bit lower."
"I will take that win."
Saying so, I also took a sip from the drink, a nice silence falling between the two of us as I slid forth a card from one of the banks to Elowen. In the lands the Elves rule in finance with their banks and money and dealings, but that isn’t the same in the water. The ones that dominated the finance and banking sector were the Golden Turtles.
So the card I pushed forth, black yet sleek, had the golden turtle insignia.
"That’s unlimited cash for you. Since you feel a bit better and keep wanting to feel that more, why don’t you form your own group?"
"Hmmm...."
Elowen didn’t directly reply to it. She took the card from the table, looking at it deeply.
"It’s not name-branded yet. You do it, then it belongs to only you. Even I can’t know how you spend it. You can find your old comrades, save many from their tragic pasts, and you can form your own power as you dominate the seas, becoming your own hero...."
Finishing my words as I went back to drinking. The only sounds left were the two of us drinking away.
Minutes later, Elowen finally spoke.
"If I do this, will the deal between us still stay right?"
I knew what she meant, so I swore the promise.
"I swear under the name of the Creation Goddess Sylvie that when you need me, I will forever be there for you."
The promise was done, and with that, Elowen pushed her mana into the card, forming the connection. From then on, there was only silence as we drank. What needed to be said and done was already completed between the two of us, who spent 2 days on the run together. From then on, right now we just lie in peace. A connection was formed, and with that ringing in her ears, she will crave me in subtle ways.
Plus, with her, it’s the long con for me. She is a very mature character with such hate in her. From the beginning, it would take a lot of tries to even break it into something romantic. For now, I am happy with it. I got a regressor under my influence, and when she connected to me, I got all her memories, so in the end, I was the one who earned the most in this deal.
Now I can move on to the next tasks that need to be completed.
