Chapter 3: I Have a Job
CEO’s Office
An Lan was seated on the office sofa, conversing with Su Qingyu. “Su Qingyu, let me tell you, a man with good looks came to apply for a position in our public relations department today.”
“With all the attractive women in your PR department, it’s no wonder it attracts the predatory types,” Su Qingyu quipped, her words laced with humor. She was quite familiar with the dynamics of the PR department.
It had always been her observation that among ten men seeking positions in PR, nine were primarily drawn by the presence of the attractive female staff.
As the CEO, she maintained a keen interest in the welfare of her employees while also enforcing strict standards. This blend of unwavering resolve and inherent kindness was the very foundation upon which Tianya Group's current prosperity was built.
However, Su Qingyu suspected she would find the situation rather disheartening if she were to discover that the “predator” in question was, in fact, her own husband.
“So, did he successfully pass the assessment?”
“Mhm, and he aced it with flawless execution. His grasp of certain product details even surpassed my own.”
“Really? That’s remarkably impressive.” Su Qingyu offered her unreserved admiration for An Lan’s expertise. An Lan was widely regarded as the intellectual powerhouse of the entire corporation.
The fact that An Lan now admitted someone was even more knowledgeable left Su Qingyu in a state of astonishment.
“What’s even more perplexing is that when I inquired about his educational background, he stated he hadn’t completed high school. And astonishingly, he didn’t appear to be fabricating the truth,” An Lan conveyed with a serious expression, her gaze fixed on Su Qingyu.
Not having graduated from high school…
At this juncture, the image of Ye Shikai’s face materialized in Su Qingyu’s mind. She had gleaned some information about Ye Shikai’s past from her brother, Su Pengzhan.
He had reportedly left high school prematurely to enlist in the military. As for his experiences subsequent to his retirement from service, Su Pengzhan remained entirely in the dark. Despite Su Pengzhan’s relentless efforts to locate Ye Shikai for the three years following his discharge from the military, it was only recently that he ascertained Ye Shikai’s whereabouts in Europe. Subsequently, he had notified Ye Shikai to return to Huaxia for the impending marriage.
“Qingyu, what is occupying your thoughts?” An Lan observed Su Qingyu with her head bowed, appearing lost in contemplation.
“It’s nothing… I should be heading back now, Lanlan. It’s getting rather late,” Su Qingyu’s thoughts returned to the present as she spoke to An Lan. Acknowledging this, An Lan responded, “Alright then, make sure you travel home safely.” Following their parting, An Lan made her way back to the public relations department’s office.
At the restaurant
“Boss, what’s the price for three servings?” Ye Shikai glanced at his wallet, mentally scolding himself for neglecting to request meal expenses from An Lan. His intention was to purchase one serving for An Lan, another for himself, and a third for his hardworking wife, whom he presumed had not yet eaten.
“One hundred for three servings,” the proprietor stated. Damn it, he only possessed enough funds for two servings. After a moment’s deliberation, Ye Shikai resigned himself to forgoing his own meal. His wife’s hunger was a priority, so he contented himself with purchasing only two servings from the boss.
Around this time, Su Qingyu had arrived back at Lishi Garden. Upon opening the door, Nanny Wu emerged to greet her. “Miss, are you feeling hungry? Shall I prepare dinner for you?”
“Yes, please. By the way, has Ye Shikai returned yet?” Su Qingyu surveyed the conspicuously empty living room.
“Not yet. The young master must be occupied with something important, I suppose. I shall prepare a portion for him as well.” Nanny Wu held a favorable impression of Ye Shikai.
By lunchtime, she had already formed the opinion that the young master was an individual of great sincerity, unburdened by pretense. She had observed numerous suitors for her mistress, and they had consistently struck her as lacking genuine sincerity.
Knowing that Ye Shikai had not yet returned caused a flicker of displeasure to surface in Su Qingyu. After all, this was his home. Was he not expected to be present on his first day?
Engrossed in her work at the company, she surmised that this man, possessing neither employment nor acquaintances in Yanjing, might have sought amusement at a bar by this late hour, or perhaps was even secretly engaging the services of prostitutes behind her back. How could she possibly consent to a marriage with such an individual?
The contemplation of this possibility ignited Su Qingyu’s indignation. “Forget about him, the useless freeloader.”
Observing her mistress’s growing agitation, Nanny Wu promptly stepped forward to offer a calming word. “Miss, please refrain from speaking about your husband in such a manner. Regardless of circumstances, he is still your spouse. It’s possible he has encountered genuine difficulties.”
Su Qingyu emitted a cold scoff. What sort of trouble could this man possibly be in? She harbored considerable dissatisfaction with the marriage that her father had arranged. If not for Su Pengzhan’s stern threat to disown her as his daughter, she questioned whether she would have ever agreed to marry Ye Shikai.
The romantic union she truly desired was one of profound sanctity, and her chosen partner had to be exceptional. However, the current reality of Ye Shikai fell far short of her aspirations.
“Honey, I’m home,” Ye Shikai announced as he opened the door, addressing Su Qingyu, who was seated at the dining table. He had just completed delivering An Lan’s meal and had hurried back, concerned that the food might grow cold.
“So, you do remember you have a home to return to?” Su Qingyu inquired sarcastically, her tone underscoring her evident dissatisfaction. “Honey, what are you implying? How could I possibly forget that I have a home?”
"Look, I even brought back food for you." With that said, he produced a meal from within his clothing.
He had carefully wrapped the food box with his outer coat, fearing that the meal would turn cold.
Su Qingyu cast a glance at the food held in Ye Shikai’s hand.
Perhaps she had truly misjudged him, but even so, an apology was out of the question for her.
As the reigning queen of the business world, she had always occupied a position of absolute authority.
To offer an apology of her own volition was something utterly unthinkable.
However, recalling that Ye Shikai’s father had once saved her own father’s life and acknowledging that she had indeed been mistaken about Ye Shikai, Su Qingyu felt a slight sting of guilt.
Regardless of anything, he was her husband now, and it was wrong of her to treat him in such a manner.
Following their meal, Su Qingyu settled onto the sofa and observed Ye Shikai, who was still in the process of eating.
She then spoke, "Make your way to my company tomorrow.
I shall arrange a position for you within the security department."
Indeed, Su Qingyu harbored no fondness for Ye Shikai.
In her eyes, this marriage was a grave error, yet the man before her was now her lawfully wedded husband.
She could not simply disregard his well-being.
Upon hearing her words, Ye Shikai nearly expelled his food.
The cold, unfeeling CEO was spontaneously offering to help him secure employment, a gesture that stirred a flicker of warmth within his heart.
Su Qingyu was, in fact, showing concern for him.
"There is no need.
I have already secured a position with a salary exceeding six thousand.
I shall no longer need to solicit funds from you."
"Is this because of our conversation earlier today?
Truthfully, if you were genuinely in need of funds, I would have provided them, after all… my father instructed me to look after you." Su Qingyu felt a sense of bashfulness; after all, the harsh words she had uttered at noon were truly damaging to one's self-esteem.
She was not entirely devoid of compassion, and furthermore, Ye Shikai remained her husband in the eyes of the law.
Ye Shikai let out a sigh, it was evident that Su Qingyu believed her earlier remarks had wounded his pride.
This was precisely why Ye Shikai had misled her about finding employment, placing him in a predicament where he could simultaneously laugh and weep.
He had, in reality, found a job, yet when he stated the truth, no one lent him any credence.
Observing Ye Shikai’s firm refusal, Su Qingyu grew somewhat exasperated.
Interpreting his kindness as utter ingratitude, she turned and ascended the stairs to retire.
Hearing the distinct sound of a door being slammed shut, Ye Shikai understood that his wife had once again misunderstood him and become enraged.
He proceeded to clear the dishes and followed her upstairs.
Gazing at the closed door of Su Qingyu’s room, Ye Shikai could not help but sigh repeatedly.
When, he wondered, would he finally be permitted to share a room with his wife?
Naturally, Ye Shikai was fully cognizant that such a prospect was presently out of the question.
Turning away, he opened his own room door, took a seat on the bed, regulated his breathing, and guided his internal Qi to circulate through his meridians.
Upon completing a full cycle, a sense of renewed vigor washed over him.
Opening his eyes, Ye Shikai perceived a small augmentation in his internal strength.
This formidable power, honed through years of relentless combat, had established Ye Shikai as an unparalleled War God on the battlefield.
He had single-handedly dismantled the Vipers, the most formidable mercenary organization in Africa, later earning the fearsome moniker, the Netherworld King.
His extraordinary achievements instilled deep trepidation throughout the European mercenary underworld; those who were aware of the Netherworld King dared not cross him, lest they incur the wrath of the God of Slaughter.
For Ye Shikai, another critical function of his internal Qi was to keep his Demon Addiction at bay.
This was Huaxia, an urban landscape, and should his Demon Addiction resurface and fail to be suppressed promptly, the repercussions would be unimaginable, particularly now that he had a wife.
Should Su Qingyu suffer any harm as a result of this, Ye Shikai would never find it within himself to forgive his own actions.
