Ye Shikai leaves Chang’an, advising Li Yueying to let the Li family temporarily ally with the Chen family. He then travels to Yun City to meet with Wuyan at the Worm Sect. Wuyan has been in seclusion attempting to find a way to counter the Chen family’s synthetic poisonous insects. She believes the rare Poisonous Insect King might be the key, but worries its scarcity compared to the Chen family’s mass-produced insects will be a problem.

"The Poisonous Insect King... can it be bred? We don’t actually need that many, we can take it slow." Ye Shikai asked.

"Impossible. If the Poisonous Insect King could be bred, then the other Worms wouldn’t need to exist at all, we’d just breed Poisonous Insect Kings directly." Wuyan went on, "The Poisonous Insect King has a very low reproduction rate, and it’s extremely hard to cultivate."

"That does make sense." Ye Shikai understood the logic of the "food chain". If you treat Worms as a kind of "food chain", then the Poisonous Insect King is at the top. As the apex creature, its numbers would naturally be the smallest, and its reproduction rate the lowest; otherwise how are the Worms below supposed to ’play’.

But if the Poisonous Insect King can’t be cultivated, and it’s that scarce in number, how can it effectively restrain the synthetic poison insects? That’s the real big problem.

"This Fat Cicada really is useless, huh."

"Enough, complaining doesn’t help." Wuyan rolled her eyes, saying with contempt.

"Then is there any other way?" Ye Shikai asked.

"I’m already testing antidotes, but the results aren’t great. Looks like we still need some time."

"We’re almost out of time. I just came from Chang’an, and the situation there has already changed..."

"What, you went to Chang’an?"

"Yes." Ye Shikai nodded in reply.

"What did you go to Chang’an for?"

"Of course, to look for the noble families and ask them to unite." Ye Shikai explained.

"You went to the Li Family, right?" Wuyan asked.

"How did you know?"

"You’ve got grudges with the Tang Family and the Gongsun Family, how could you possibly go to them? So you must have gone to the Li Family."

"You’re right, I went to the Li Family, met Li Changtian and also Li Yueying."

"How did it go?" Wuyan asked urgently, looking very anxious for an answer.

"I persuaded them to surrender."

"What did you say?" Wuyan shouted, agitated.

"Calm down first, why are you yelling so loud." Ye Shikai was startled by Wuyan’s shout.

"How am I supposed to calm down, how could you say that?"

"I’ve thought it through. Right now we still don’t have an effective way to deal with synthetic poison insects and mutants. Even if the Li Family resists, it’s pointless. Better to surrender to the Chen family for now, then slowly figure something out." Ye Shikai explained.

"So that’s it. That actually is a pretty good idea." Wuyan voiced her agreement; surrender was just an expedient measure.

"I’m not only going to persuade the Li Family to surrender; some of the other noble families should do the same, otherwise they’ll just be throwing their lives away." As soon as Ye Shikai said this, Wuyan’s expression grew even more grave. She had become Sect Leader of the Worm Sect in her teens, widely acknowledged as a prodigiously talented cultivator, extremely proficient in Worm Skills, and she’d never really felt pressure before. But this time, she could feel a real crushing weight. She was racing against time, racing against the Chen family...

..................

"It’s so late, why are you still up?" In the middle of the night, Ye Shikai noticed the lights in the inner cabinet were still on. Not only Wuyan, but several elders of the Worm Sect were inside, all studying something.

"The sooner we develop the antidote, the sooner we can stop the Chen family."

"Too bad I don’t understand Worm Skills, I can’t help you with anything here." Ye Shikai sighed bitterly. He was of no use here at all. During the day, he’d finally learned some of the truth from the Worm Sect disciples: the reason no one went to the back mountain and Hetian fields to pick herbs was because Wuyan had ordered it. All Worm Sect disciples had to prepare for war. Maybe she’d already anticipated how the situation would develop, so she made preparations in advance.

"You should hurry and get some rest. We’ve got things handled here."

Whoosh, whoosh.

"Watch out." Ye Shikai suddenly shouted. Two darts shot in through the window. His movement technique was fast; Inner Strength burst outward, and he blocked both darts.

"There’s an assassin."

"Protect the Sect Leader."

"Protect the Sect Leader."

Several elders of the Worm Sect immediately moved to shield Wuyan. Ye Shikai rushed out at once, only to see two Worm Sect disciples knocked unconscious on the ground. The assassin’s dark silhouette had already vanished into the night.

"Damn it."

"What’s going on?" Wuyan finally reacted, furious. This was the inner cabinet of the Worm Sect, a forbidden zone, protected by layers of Worm Sect disciples. And the sect had hundreds of disciples patrolling day and night. How could an assassin penetrate this deep, and even get away just like that?

"An assassin broke in, but there was nothing I could do. He was too fast; even I couldn’t see him clearly before he got away." Ye Shikai picked up the two darts from the floor and dropped them into a bowl of clear water. Very quickly, the water turned black.

"There’s deadly poison on the darts. The assassin’s target should be you." Ye Shikai said coldly.

"Sect Leader, the assassin must still be somewhere in the Worm Sect. If we gather all the disciples and search together, we’ll definitely find him." An elder suggested.

As for the assassin, Ye Shikai didn’t know who he was, but instinctively he thought of Chen Yuxin. The Shadow Organization under her command was the best assassin outfit around. Aside from the several commanders, there were plenty of Assassin killers below them, all top-tier. Infiltrating the heavily guarded Worm Sect would be very difficult, but not impossible.

However, Ye Shikai had another bold idea.

..................

Worm Sect, secret chamber.

"What, you think there’s a mole inside the Worm Sect?" Wuyan shouted.

"It’s just my guess. I don’t have any solid evidence, but that’s the feeling I get." Ye Shikai analyzed. "The Worm Sect’s defenses are tight inside and out, and the inner cabinet is a forbidden zone. To get from the main gate to the inner cabinet, you have to pass seven or eight defensive lines at least. Even with the Netherworld King’s Helmet, hiding myself, I still wouldn’t be a hundred percent sure I could make it through. But it’d be different if there were an inside man. If it’s someone from within the Worm Sect, it gets much easier."

"What you’re saying makes sense, but who could it be?" Wuyan was worried. If this mole wasn’t rooted out, he’d stay inside the Worm Sect, and there would be a second, a third assassination. Wuyan had no intention of spending her days in constant fear. This was the Worm Sect, and she was the Sect Leader; this was her turf.

"That... I really can’t say. I don’t know your Worm Sect people. Besides, having a mole is just my speculation. Don’t take it too seriously yet, stay calm."

"How am I supposed to stay calm? The antidote still isn’t developed, and now an assassin shows up on top of that." Wuyan was under immense pressure too. The assassin’s appearance made her extremely irritable; it felt like the last straw that might break the camel’s back.

"I don’t know whether that assassin snuck in from outside or is someone inside the Worm Sect, but I do recognize the poison on those darts."
