During a film shoot, Yueling's horse runs wild, leading her to a river where she reveals impressive agility. Ye Shikai appears, questioning her involvement with the HST project and the "Mothman." Yueling denies everything, but Ye Shikai leaves her with his contact information, believing she is a pawn in a larger scheme. He later discusses his suspicions with colleagues at the National Security Bureau.

"By the way, I heard Yueling is filming tonight, with the whole crew around her and more than a dozen bodyguards. Plus, she’s the female lead, there are several cameras locked on her at all times. How did you manage to meet her alone?" Bai Ni shot back.

"Well... I have my own ways, and I won’t leave any traces." Ye Shikai didn’t mention how he’d spooked the horse. It was indeed a bit hard to justify if you spelled it out, but it was also the best method—otherwise, secretly meeting this wildly popular actress really wouldn’t have been so easy.

Ye Shikai was sure he and Yueling would meet again. He had already ordered Worm to secretly investigate Yueling’s background. These days, it’s not impossible for a rookie star to suddenly blow up, but if that actress also happens to be a cultivator and doesn’t have any major power backing her, then it’s highly suspicious. Yueling hadn’t signed with any entertainment company; she set up her own studio instead, and there was no word of any force behind her. How does such a "backless" artist get so famous? That was a huge question mark. So Ye Shikai had sent Worm to investigate in secret, to see who exactly was standing behind this Yueling.

"Alright, we’ll be staying here from now on. If there’s any movement, remember to inform me."

"Yes."

"Good."

Ye Shikai was also staying here. This was a National Security Bureau "stronghold"; you needed ID to get in or out. And Ye Shikai was probably the highest-cleared non–NSB member around—he could move in and out of practically any National Security Bureau facility at will.

The next day.

"We’ve checked the available information on Yueling. She’s not a Huaxia national, and she’s not someone who immigrated there either. Her parents emigrated overseas and she was born abroad. So unfortunately, there’s not much data we can get." Shen Wu reported.

"I figured as much. If you want to know about her, you’re better off asking her fans, or the head of a support club." Ye Shikai joked.

"Yeah, fans are insane about chasing idols these days—they’d dig out everything down to home address and family genealogy if they could." Bai Ni chimed in.

"Yueling is a public figure, so our investigation on her can’t be too aggressive. At the same time, you all still need to be careful. Mr. Ye already said she’s a suspicious person right now, and you must pay attention to your own safety. As for what happened in Tianjing... I don’t want to see a repeat of that."

"Yes, Mrs. Bai."

Two hours later, at the entrance to the villa district.

"Sir, may I ask who you are?" the villa security guard said.

"I’m here to see Miss Yueling. Go in and let her know."

"Alright, may I ask who you are, sir, so we can report it inside?"

"Just tell her it’s Mr. Ye. I think she’ll let me in." Ye Shikai said evenly.

"Alright then, please wait a moment, sir."

Five minutes later.

"Sir, please come in. Miss Yueling is waiting for you inside."

"Alright, thanks." Ye Shikai strolled into the villa. He had already come by once yesterday, and Yueling’s bodyguards all recognized him, so they didn’t bother with extra checks. If Ye Shikai hadn’t set up last night’s little scheme and forced that less-than-pleasant encounter, she probably wouldn’t be seeing him again today.

"Miss Yueling, we finally meet again." Ye Shikai’s smile didn’t reach his eyes; his expression gave nothing away. After what happened last night, even if Yueling didn’t actively dislike him, she should at least be wary. But he seemed to have underestimated her. Not only was she not wary, she greeted him with a bright smile, like she was welcoming a long-lost old friend.

"Mr. Ye, welcome. Let’s talk inside."

"Sure."

This villa was purchased by Yueling herself. Though it was in the suburbs, the price was steep—it was very much a "rich people’s area." Of course, plenty of celebrities had properties here. Yueling was the current top trending star, but she hadn’t been in the business long—you could still call her a rookie. The fact that she could buy a villa here was genuinely surprising.

"Didn’t expect Miss Yueling to own property here too." Ye Shikai suddenly remarked.

"I haven’t been in the industry long, but fortunately my family’s situation is comfortable enough. My parents funded the purchase of this villa." Yueling seemed to have already guessed what he would ask; her answer was very straightforward.

"I see."

"Mr. Ye, you’ve come to see me again today. I wonder what for."

"Miss Yueling, you’re really forgetful. Have you already forgotten what happened in the woods last night?" Ye Shikai gave a sly grin.

"Is that so? I’ve been busy memorizing lines lately, I really did forget." Yueling played coy too, trading "Tai Chi" with Ye Shikai.

"Alright then, since Miss Yueling doesn’t remember, I’ll remind you. You should still have some impression of the Mothman incident, right? One week ago, twenty-seventh floor of the Zhu Xi Hotel in Yanjing, Room 2703."

"Sorry, Mr. Ye, I’ve been very busy lately, traveling all over the place domestically and abroad. I’ve honestly forgotten a lot of things. If you really want to know, you could try asking someone else—for example, my bodyguard, or my handler."

"Then, Miss Yueling, who is this person?" Ye Shikai took out that photo. In it, you could clearly see a man at Yueling’s side, looking up at the Mothman in the sky. At first, everyone had overlooked him—but Ye Shikai felt that this man might actually be the key.

"This man appeared in Miss Yueling’s room and looks incredibly intimate with you. I’d say he must be someone very important. Don’t tell me you don’t know him." Ye Shikai countered.

"Mr. Ye, this photo must be something shot by some paparazzo. You’re not planning to use this photo to blackmail me, are you?" Yueling deftly shifted the topic.

"Relax, I’m not that vile. I’m just curious who this man actually is."

"He’s one of my personal bodyguards. Whenever I travel, I get mobbed by fans and media, even at hotels. I always need a bunch of bodyguards to keep me safe. I let my bodyguard into my room—what’s wrong with that?"

"In that case, may I have the honor of meeting him? I don’t think you’d mind, would you? Since he’s your personal bodyguard, he should be following you closely. I assume he’s somewhere nearby." Ye Shikai suggested. He didn’t believe Yueling at all. The man in the photo didn’t look like a bodyguard; his clothes alone gave that away. Yueling probably hadn’t thought through her answer yet and had just tossed out a random lie.

"I’m afraid not. I’ve already let him go."
