Xue San planned to rescue his sister-in-law from the dungeon that night, but when he sought aid from Ye Shikai, they were ambushed by Mi Wen. Ye Shikai created a diversion, allowing Xue San to escape, but their plan to rescue He Linghan failed as she had already been moved from the dungeon.

"When did they transfer her?" Xue San demanded further.

"About an hour ago. Just as you went to the government office, thousands of imperial guards arrived and took your sister-in-law from the dungeon. There were too many of them, and we dared not act rashly," Shangguan Jian explained. "They prepared a dozen carriages to go to different locations to prevent us from tracking them."

"Damn it, this is terrible. I didn’t see this coming." Xue San pounded his chest in frustration, agonizing over the fact that Mi Wen anticipated their move. When he entered the government office, he clearly wasn’t followed, so why did Mi Wen suddenly barge in?

"What should we do now?"

"Currently, we don’t know where your sister-in-law is being held. The best approach is to respond to changes without altering our stance, especially now. We absolutely must not lose our composure," Shangguan Jian urged, trying to rally everyone’s spirits. If they gave up first, how could they rescue her?

Soon after, there was a knock at the door. Everyone quickly grabbed their weapons and became alert.

"Shangguan, Xue San, it’s me!"

"It’s Old Ye’s voice." Shangguan Jian stepped forward, hastily opened the door, and Ye Shikai rushed in. After checking to see that no one was behind him, he closed the door.

"Old Ye, are you okay?" Shangguan Jian asked.

"Don’t worry, I’m fine. Mi Wen can’t do anything to me." Ye Shikai changed the subject and asked, "What happened? We need to rescue Ling’er quickly."

"Old Ye, we just got word that your sister-in-law... she has been transferred."

"What!" Ye Shikai exclaimed, turning to leave.

"No, I have to find Mi Wen. I’ve already escaped and enraged her, she’s definitely going to act against Ling’er." Ye Shikai was anxious beyond measure, realizing he was still one step too late. When Mi Wen acts out of passion, there’s no telling what she’ll do.

"Old Ye, calm down first," Shangguan Jian tried to reassure him.

"Yes, Lord. If Mi Wen really wanted to harm your sister-in-law, why bother transferring her? She could just send someone to the dungeon and kill her with one stroke. Since she’s transferred, it means Mi Wen simply doesn’t want you to find her."

Ye Shikai paced back and forth in the room, forcing himself to calm down but struggling to find peace. He Linghan’s life was in the balance, and he was agonizing over what to do.

"Wait, Knife Soul, don’t you have Divine Sense? Please check where Ling’er might be," Ye Shikai suddenly remembered Knife Soul, which could use Divine Sense to detect everything within miles. With its help, locating He Linghan was possible.

"I fear I can’t help you," Knife Soul stated, though it wasn’t ignoring him, just expressing its inability.

"Why?" Ye Shikai asked back.

"Last time, you were hit twice by Illusion Pupil consecutively. Although your body has mostly recovered, the spiritual power damage was severe. If I hadn’t released a large amount of spiritual power to counteract the illusion’s effects, you’d probably be dead by now," Knife Soul continued.

"So, even now, I don’t have enough strength to activate Divine Sense. Besides, Mi Wen is royalty in Chu State; she can use secret techniques to block Divine Sense as she pleases. She can set up a Barrier, making it impossible for us to locate Miss He."

"Alright, I’ll think of something else, but I truly must thank you for last time. You used your spiritual power to negate the effects of Illusion Pupil on me. I was already wracked with unbearable pain, worse than death itself. I can’t imagine what would have happened if I had taken it head-on."

"You don’t need to worry too much. The Illusion Pupil secret technique also harms the user greatly. It’s a ’kill a thousand, lose eight hundred’ tactic. Mi Wen used it twice in one month; I suspect her spiritual power is nearly exhausted. In other words, she won’t be able to use Illusion Pupil again anytime soon," Knife Soul explained.

"That’s good."

The group spent the night resting at the stronghold, taking turns to sleep to avoid discovery by the soldiers. After curfew, no townsfolk were allowed on the streets, resulting in eerie silence that ironically aided them; if soldiers approached, they’d hear them coming early.

Ye Shikai, however, did not sleep a wink, constantly worrying about He Linghan and her circumstances, wondering how Mi Wen would deal with her.

The next day.

"Not good, Lord!"

"What happened?" Ye Shikai jumped up in alarm as a Hidden Guard who went out to buy breakfast rushed in with a proclamation.

Ye Shikai opened the proclamation, and the content left him speechless, trembling as his palm dropped it to the ground.

"Old Ye, what happened?" Shangguan Jian queried, picking the proclamation off the ground while Man Cang leaned in, unable to read the words.

"Lord Shangguan, what’s going on?"

"It’s Mi Wen. She’s ordered your sister-in-law to be... executed publicly tomorrow," Shangguan Jian struggled to accept. Man Cang responded with a voiced outrage, realizing Mi Wen was truly intent on wiping them out. As a Local Tyrant, there’s proclamations all over the city, practically announcing it to the world. If she backed out, she’d become the laughingstock of everyone. So, she’s made up her mind.

"Old Ye, she’s definitely trying to draw us out," Shangguan Jian immediately understood Mi Wen’s intentions. They don’t know where He Linghan is held, and Mi Wen doesn’t know their whereabouts either. But her ultimate goal is Ye Shikai himself, so she plastered proclamations around town to declare He Linghan’s execution, ensuring Ye Shikai would inevitably show himself.

"No matter what, I have to save her. If she goes to the execution ground, I cannot stand by and watch her die. We will either leave together alive or I will die with her," Ye Shikai answered resolutely. He Linghan was his boundary. Even if Mi Wen cast the Heaven and Earth Net, he’d relentlessly press forward.

"Old Ye, since you’re determined to go, as a brother, I won’t hesitate. What’s your plan?"

"Yeah, when it comes to charging into battle, I’ve never been second. Once the lord gives the order, even if I’m alone, I’ll not hesitate," Man Cang urged.

"Lord, Xue San has always been a thief. If it weren’t for the lord, I’d just be a street rat. In Nanyang, I already died once, what’s wrong with dying again?"

"We’re all willing to risk everything for the lord."

Everyone kneeled on one knee, deeply moving Ye Shikai. From a mere soldier to commander of armies, he’d come so far. Memories surfaced, and his eyes were subtly reddened...

"Brothers, you’ve followed me for so long. I once promised to take you to a place without war. Now it seems I’ve broken my word. The execution ground is heavily guarded, and there’s little chance of survival. I truly wish none of you to follow me to your deaths."
