Duvessa reveals her plan to collapse the Kingdom of Solaris by luring away its heroes and stealing the Crown of Dawn. Mammon agrees to personally kill the hero Reinhardt Arcknight but demands Duvessa also search for and eliminate or capture a woman with unusual powers. The kingdom mobilizes for war as demons appear on the borders, heralding the Battle of Blacktide.

Somewhere within Blueberry Town, a young woman quietly tightened her grip around a strip of cloth tied around a certain knight’s arm. As though she was trying to hold onto something precious. Something she refused to lose.

.

.

Northern Frontier Fortress, Kingdom of Solaris.

Cold winds howled across the barren plains. Built into the mountains themselves, its walls stretched for kilometers across the frozen highlands, standing between civilization and the endless darkness beyond.

Standing atop the fortress walls, Reinhardt looked into the distance and saw hell.

Below them spanned darkness. An endless sea of darkness. No, it would be more appropriate to say it was an endless sea of demons that stretched from one end of the world to the other.

Countless abominations crawled across the land. Winged monsters circled the skies like vultures. Demonic beasts larger than houses stomped across the earth, causing the ground to shudder with every step.

Even the horizon itself had disappeared. The crimson light of countless eyes shone in the darkness like stars. No, stars were beautiful. This sight was not.

Rather than beautiful, it was despair inducing.

Behind Reinhardt, the banners of the knight orders fluttered.

To hold down the crucial northern front, more than eight thousand knights were assembled. Some were veterans. Some were newly inducted. Some had never seen a real battlefield before.

Yet every one of them stood straight. Ready to fight for humanity.

Whistle~

A whistle sounded out, and the Vice Commander of the Temple of Light approached. He looked at the endless darkness and clicked his tongue.

"That’s a lot. The enemy’s number is significantly more than I expected. The Council only assigned us this many troops?"

He glanced behind them. A little over eight thousand knights stood within the fortress. Eight thousand against that endless horde. "Are they underestimating the demons or are they trying to kill us?"

Reinhardt remained silent. His golden eyes never left the horizon. The wind blew through his hair. The scent of death was thick in the air.

Something about this situation bothered him. But he couldn’t put it into words.

A moment later.

OOOOOOOOOOOO~

A deep horn sound rumbled across the plains. The horn of war was blown.

The war began.

Like a black tsunami, the demons rushed towards the fortress. Their movements caused the earth to tremble. Thousands... tens of thousands of demons charged at once.

At the same time, another horn resounded from the fortress.

"Knights, ready your bows."

"Ready!"

"FIRE!"

The skies darkened. Countless arrows rained down. Explosions erupted wherever the arrows landed. These arrows were no simple arrows, but were bestowed with mana and inlaid with the skills of the knights.

Although most knights preferred using swords, there were also some who mastered other weapons. Besides, it was mandatory for all knights to master all weapons.

Explosions erupted among the demonic ranks. Bodies flew and limbs scattered. Yet the tide did not stop.

The demons responded in kind. Magic circles illuminated the battlefield. Flames, ice, lightning, dark fire... all kinds of magic bombarded the fortress.

Large demons or demonic monsters crashed into the wall, intending to bring it down, while many started scaling it. Winged demons descended from above, only to be intercepted by aerial knights.

The slaughter began.

Knights and demons collided. Steel met claw. Faith collided with hatred. Resolve collided with madness. Humanity against extinction.

The battlefield became a meat grinder.

A knight severed a demon’s head only to be dragged down by three more. A veteran lost his arm and continued fighting with his remaining arm.

The walls became soaked with blood. The ground became covered with corpses.

The knights of the Temple of Light, using their holy energy, illuminated the darkness. Black blood stained the snow. Screams mixed with war cries.

The battlefield no longer resembled a battlefield. It resembled a world ending. And standing at the center of it all, leading all these troops, was Reinhardt.

He drew his sword, and golden light erupted from his body, shining across the plains like a beacon of light.

For a brief moment, it seemed like the sun itself had descended upon the earth.

Reinhardt made his move. A golden light descended.

BOOM... Dozens of demons exploded. Reinhardt landed amidst the enemy ranks. His sword flashed and a silver arc split the battlefield. Hundreds of demons died instantly.

"FOR SOLARIS."

"FOR HUMANITY."

Seeing the hero Reinhardt kill hundreds of demons with a single move, the morale soared. Roars of the knights shook the battlefield. The first battle had begun.

.

One month later...

BOOOOM...

The corpse of a gigantic demon crashed to the ground. Its body was over twenty meters tall and covered in bone like armour. Its three severed heads rolled across the battlefield. Reinhardt slowly lowered his sword.

He had just killed a Demon General leading the demonic army.

Having culled the enemy leader down, he hurriedly gave orders.

"All units regroup. Retreat back to the fortress."

His voice spread across the battlefield.

"Understood." All the knights made an orderly retreat.

After a month long gruelling fight, the topography around the battlefield had long since become unrecognizable. Mountains had vanished. Forests no longer existed. The landscape itself had been rewritten by war.

Despite all, the fortress stood tall. Although parts of it were urgently being repaired, it still stood impenetrable.

Night fell.

Inside the command tent, everyone looked weary. Maps and reports covered the table.

Bob rubbed his forehead. Marcus leaned against a wall. Mikita drank coffee after coffee to purge her sleepiness.

All the Holy Knights were assembled inside the tent.

Reinhardt spoke first.

"Report."

Marcus nodded and pointed toward the map. "We have confirmed the enemy’s composition. Low ranking demons continue forming the bulk of their army. Mid ranking demons serve as assault units. The real problem are the high ranking demons and Demon Generals."

Drystan folded his arms. "We’ve confirmed eight of them. And each of them is troublesome."

"Thankfully, the commander killed one." Bob sighed.

Marcus nodded. "That leaves seven."

Reinhardt looked around and asked, "Have we identified all of them and their unique magic?"

Holy Knight Ciel adjusted her glasses and spoke first. "I fought with General Khal. He is a giant covered in eyes. Every eye can fire beams capable of melting steel. Additionally, he induces strong hypnosis if you stare at one of its eyes too long, making it very hard to approach."

Holy Knight Maynard spoke next. "I fought with Vorak, the Flesh Shepherd. He controls dead bodies. The more casualties there are, the stronger he becomes."

Bargo cursed. "I hate that bastard."

Marcus nodded. "He even controlled the dead bodies of our fallen knights, causing quite a chaos in the formation."

Holy Knight Mikita spoke after that. "There is also Myanarth, the Hollow Choir. Her ability is sound manipulation. She can instantly empower others through herself with her shriek or cause a wide area shockwave."

"Morveth, the Earth Digger. It devours corpses and becomes stronger. The longer the battle lasts, the stronger it gets. We need to quickly intercept it, or else it becomes difficult to confront."

"Vaelgor the Rotfather. Everything around him decays. He can rust steel, spoil food, and make people sick. Half our medical supplies were used up because of him."

One by one, they listed the Demon Generals that had shown their faces so far and their abilities.

From space manipulation to sound, corpses, and even elements, each of these Demon Generals had powerful, troublesome abilities. If they were not kept in check, they could unleash immense destruction.

After a month of battle, after suffering some setbacks, they were forced to change their formation and plans.

"These remaining Seven Demon Generals cannot be allowed to run wild. The moment they appear, one of you should confront it immediately and prevent it from influencing the battle." Drystan ordered.

All the knights nodded their heads, showing their understanding.

Thousands of ordinary demons could be handled by the other knights, but Demon Generals could not. Each one was a walking catastrophe.

Plans began forming and counters were discussed. Who would intercept whom. Which divisions would reinforce where.

Reinhardt listened quietly. Yet something still bothered him. A faint discomfort, like a thorn in his heart.

But no matter how much he thought about it, he couldn’t understand what it was.

.

Six months later...

The gruelling war continued. Winter had come and gone. Now the rain was falling unceasingly across the plains.

The northern fortress had become eerily silent. Everyone looked exhausted. The battlefield had changed everyone.

After over six months of battles, the young knights who were once filled with passion and naivety had become hardened veterans. Many names had fallen during this time. Some were their friends, acquaintances, or comrades.

Their absence tormented these young knights. Still, they moved on.

Why? Because they were knights. They were the flames that carried the hope and future of humanity.

Inside the main tent, the atmosphere was sombre. Over half a year, they had killed hundreds of thousands of demons. Four Demon Generals had fallen. But the enemy numbers never decreased.
