Tang Chen faced the mirror, observing his reflection. His impeccably tailored suit clung to his lean frame, complemented by a mature and steady navy blue tie. A slight tug at the tie, accompanied by a breathtaking smile, indicated his satisfaction. He turned, walking away with a slow, deliberate pace.
Yes, his leg had finally healed. For years, he had diligently pursued treatment, conquering the arduous rehabilitation process step by step. Now, he had fully recovered, indistinguishable from an ordinary person, save for a slight discomfort during rainy weather.
He arrived at the VIP entrance of the underground palace, parked his car, and lit a cigarette. Today marked the conclusion of their five-year agreement, and this was their designated meeting spot.
Leaning against a tree, Tang Chen leisurely gazed at the sky. It was eight in the morning. He was aware that Shen Zhiyi had returned to the country the previous month but had made no move to contact her. Lin Wanwan had informed him that Shen Zhiyi still hadn't regained her memory.
Tang Chen couldn't quite articulate why he felt compelled to wait here, even though he suspected it was a futile endeavor. Perhaps, deep down, he harbored a hope that Shen Zhiyi would spontaneously remember him.
From the morning's light through the heat of noon and into the hush of night, Tang Chen remained motionless, like a silent statue. The hope in his eyes gradually faded with the passing hours.
He checked the time on his mechanical watch: 11:50 AM. Tang Chen tossed his cigarette butt to the ground, crushing it with his leather shoe. A hint of a bitter smile touched his lips. He opened his car door, preparing to get in, when the sound of approaching footsteps reached him. Instinctively, he turned. Beneath the pale moonlight, he saw a woman in a red dress, her figure exuding grace.
“Tang Chen?” The voice, missed for so long, resonated. Tang Chen's body stiffened, and he strode towards her, opening his arms to embrace her tightly. “You’re here,” he murmured, his voice hoarse with longing. They hadn’t seen each other in ages.
“I’m here,” Shen Zhiyi responded reflexively. Images flashed through her mind, and she instinctively reached out, trying to grasp them, forgetting for a moment to push him away. “But… why did I come here?” she whispered, placing a hand over her heart.
“It feels like a voice inside me is urging me to come here today, saying it’ll be too late if I don’t.” Despite her lack of conscious memory, his name was indelibly etched in her heart.
Tang Chen gazed at her intently. “Are you very confused?”
“Yes.”
“Would you mind if I told you a story?”
“I want to hear it.” Her intellect suggested this man was the missing piece of her past. The moment she saw him, her heart, dormant for years, began to beat wildly.
Discovering a nearby bench, Tang Chen took her hand and they sat down. He turned his head, observing her pensive expression. Composing himself, he began to recount the story that was theirs.
“…At that time, I was thinking only of Lin Wanwan, but she paid me no mind.”
A pang of jealousy struck Shen Zhiyi, interrupting him. “What about now? Do you still like Wanwan?”
Tang Chen replied, “My heart belongs only to that girl.”
A sense of relief washed over Shen Zhiyi. “Please continue.”
Lost in recollection, Tang Chen elaborated on his past feelings and emotions as he narrated, failing to notice the subtle shifts in Shen Zhiyi’s expression.
“…When I finally accepted reality and was willing to embrace her, I realized I no longer had the right to protect her.”
Shen Zhiyi closed her eyes. The mental images that had been flickering became astonishingly vivid. She… remembered everything. Even after losing her memory and becoming the new Shen Zhiyi, seeing him again reignited her love.
